>SELECTED: You follow after Wasp, looking to get his ear ahead of the War Council. He’ll likely be the only other Company face present there, it would help to present a united front. But also the man is in deep with the rebels, its part of his job, but it couldn’t hurt to check in with him after having to sit through the betrayal of his baby rebels now not just implied but being planned out. You don’t run to close the distance with Wasp, but you do have to put a bit of a spring in your step to catch him before he’s in too far among the crowd where anyone can listen in.
“Ah Nat, good to see you. Apparently it’s just you and me at the Council meet tonight?” Wasp purses his lips when you nod. “Well, best we present a united tonight. Bad news is bad enough without the messenger getting shot, but it’ll go down better coming from you.”
You hesitate at that, your report to the LT providing a grim timeline for how the Imperials will likely winnow down the possible base location was brutally honest. The LT hasn’t told you to outright lie to the League of Dis leadership, but the implication was that glossing over the exact estimate of 4-5 weeks on the outside might be prudent. Given the panic that it sent your fellow Company officers into, you doubt such a realistic assessment will go down any better with the rebels than it did with them.
“Hey.” Wasp’s keen eye for intrigue hasn’t overlooked your own concerns. “You’re a voiddamn hero to these people, ‘Mama Snake’. Most of them know even surviving this long is in no small part to you and your crew. If you tell them we’re fragged, we’re fragged. But personally, I’d put that as gently as you can.”
“We’re fucking fragged. How’s that sound?” You grin at the Pathfinder as you say it, but he has a point. “…what if I tell them we’re not fragged? That we have a shot at holding out?”
“Maybe. If you can tell that big a lie with a straight face.” Wasp sighs, looking out at the crowd of faces. Gaunt and desperate. “People believe what they want to believe.”
