Within the detached storage space that is part of your unit, but only able to be accessed from the apartment hallway, is a tunnel. It's slightly elevated off the ground and slightly narrower then the storage room, which is literal more then a glorified walk-in closet. The tunnel is just wide enough for one person to walk comfortably. The tunnel stretches on into blackness, and you can't even see the end of it. You did not expect to see it there- it wasn't even covered up or taped off or anything, like the previous occupant who moved out just a month before you never saw it or even cared. Or maybe just never used the storage space.
Beyond a few boxes and old hangers, the secondary closet was dusty and bare. You were just checking it out because it was part of your new lease agreement. It wasn't exactly something you expected to see. Holding your phone flashlight up to the hole, you couldn't see the other end- the light couldn't penetrate the darkness. You weren't sure how long it was. You considered it being shorter and just being painted very dark black, which could be deceptive, but sticking your arm in and a tape measure you borrowed from your work, you kept unfolding the tape until it was over 6 feet long and drooped to the ground, still not touching a back wall or anything.
The tunnel was very quiet, not possessing any unusual odors of termite damage or sewer drains or anything else you could think of- not that it could be an opening into the earth, as this is on the third floor of your building. Nobody mentioned this. Your landlord didn't, the previous tenant didn't, no cryptic notes, no nothing. Nobody in the building seemed to mention it even offhanded, despite how weird it was.
You even went to the outside of your apartment building and looked at your floor from outside. If the tunnel was there, even to its meager length, you think you'd be able to see it sticking out. You even thought it could be possible the tunnel is deceptively sloped so it actually goes down instead of straight- but that wouldn't explain Unit 7.
