Food had to take priority. The next several hours were spent roaming the forested area, gathering anything she felt confident in eating, hard unripe fruits, mushrooms, edible greens, and nuts. She grudgingly took a second pass over the centipede, examining it for edible flesh. The main part of the legs was a solid mass of chitin, but a solid mass of pale flesh was wrapped around where each connected to the body, like a blobby drumstick. She piled them into a sack, then returned the main body of the bug itself. Several thick bands of muscle were present, she cut several large ‘steaks’ from it and added it to the sack. Maybe Babs would know something about their edibility, the pale flesh certainly didn’t look appetizing.
Her last pass through the forest took her to the edge of the dead forest, a section where the trees seemed to wither then fade to skeletons of their former selves. She padded into the area cautiously. A rancid smell lingered in the air, even seeming to fill the air with a faint red haze. She was definitely reaching the end of the easy forage in the area for the day, but maybe there was something more in this area. This many dead trees should be a treasure trove of mushrooms and other rot.
Still, something had killed these trees, and continued to kill them. The area was deathly quiet as well, no birds sang, no bugs flew by, not even the expected scavengers of rot. She skirted through the area quietly, keeping her eyes open for mushrooms and forage, but finding nothing. She plunged in deeper, there had to be something of note in place.
Ten minutes of pushing through the dead forest led her to the shores of a lake filled with murky red water. Her nose wrinkled reflexively as the wind shifted toward her for a moment, a rancid smell billowing off the water. No fish touched the water, no plants grew on its surface. She watched it carefully, slowly circling the lake, but it remained calm, placid and foul.
There was certainly nothing left to do here in this dead place, she turned toward home, the only question was what to occupy herself with while waiting for Babs to arrive.
