“Eltar Lorat,” you say after a long pause. You were considering Agorlak Renn instead, but you want a first officer with a keen mind, capable of providing novel solutions to the challenges that you will face. Lorat fits the bill, while Renn would serve as little more than an intermediary between you and your crew. Should he have to take command of the ship in your absence, you believe that you will be able to trust Lorat to serve as a competent – if somewhat unorthodox – deputy. You're not sure if you could say the same for Renn, after a look at his file.
“He's a radical,” the legate remarks, “a maverick. You are putting a haughty introvert in charge of managing your crew, Tekan.”
“He is a pioneer, legate, in more ways than one. I need a second-in-command who can provide me with alternate solutions and a unique perspective. He is the best choice for the Onager.” You have made your choice and you are going to stand by it.
“Very well,” Karzek replies, though you detect a hint of exasperated resignation in his tone. As far as he is concerned, you are just one of many fresh-faced graduates that he is sending into the meat grinder. He takes back the PADD and after a few buttons are pressed, he locks in the decision that you have made.
“Next, your helmsman. They shall operate the helm and have authority over the navigator, the tactical station and the flight control department. They will be responsible for projecting and directing the course of the Onager, as well as control of the ship's arsenal. They shall serve as your second officer, your third-in-command.” After a few last taps on the device, the legate passes it back towards you. This time, you are limited to three candidates.
Rhanor Mok is the highest performing candidate, according to his test results and performance analysis. In fact, none of his simulations have ever ended with the destruction of his vessel. He has always gotten his ship out of the mission area in one piece, even if it meant failing the simulation – but is such an aversion to danger a good thing?
Dekor Kenon is the first candidate you've seen so far who isn't fresh out of the Academy; he's served as the helmsman of a Groumall-class military freighter for four years. He's quite accustomed to the helm and has plenty of experience with hazardous celestial phenomena, but he's got almost no combat experience.
En Ghetar is the son of a decorated legate, Anakan Ghetar, who clearly has something to prove. Analysis of his simulations show that he is a reckless helmsman who pushes his vessel to the limits and often puts it in harm's way in order to accomplish his objective. He either passes with flying colours, or goes down with colours flying. The outcome is always spectacular.
