(just going to add that, unless it causes any conflict or he's instructed otherwise, Ryner would naturally lean towards protecting the rear, so that he can quickly react to any threats coming from the back, but also keep an eye on everyone else, for better or worse)

However, take the long way to there, passing through any other villages on the way to get provisions and if possible more ranged help (who would be placed under the command of that person from the village that ended up being the best help, don't remember their name), and see if they need help with any monster problems or something (buying provisions is nice and all, but getting them as rewards is even better).
