Harper runs a gloved hand over a dilapidated workstation covered in grime. The screen buzzes weakly to life, its display bleeding light through cracks in the glass. Lines of broken code and looping startup sequences scroll past like a dying heartbeat.
“The concrete might’ve kept the CME from frying the power,” he mutters, “But it didn’t stop it from scrambling the system. No wonder the defenses went rampant.”
You nod absently, eyes tracking the dead lenses of ceiling cameras and the dormant turrets crouched in shadowed corners. They’re slaved to your modem, obedient and silent, ready to reactivate at a mere thought. But that knowledge doesn’t stop your heartrate from jackrabbiting every time one of them ticks faintly in the dark.
The Watchtower is a mausoleum of militarized bureaucracy. Hours blur together as you comb through its offices, checkpoints, breakrooms and storage vaults. Half-eaten rations lay congealed and rotting on tables, badges still clipped to faded uniforms on corpses and closets alike, memos stamped “URGENT” that should have been digitized months ago.
