and the gales whipped from every corner
Poseidon's winds loosed from Aeolus' isle
thunderclouds shrouded earth and sea
night swept down from the sky
east and south clashed with north and west
and heaving breakers roiled up
all the crew's knees shook, they prayed for salvation
but to to them did any god turn his ear
and a wave, massive, crashed over their heads
the onslaught spun their light craft
Timonax was thrown from the steering-oar
and in one lightning attack
the brawling gale-winds struck full force
snapping the mast mid-shaft
hurling the sail and ship far across the sea
bitter brinse washed out their mouths
until to shore were thrust their ship and lives
As the rain begins to subside, you are the first to let go the solid support you'd been clinging to. The ship ran across something solid, land perhaps, but tilted at this thirty-degree angle, you cannot see what's ahead of it.
You clinb the incline to the prow, and look out over the ocean. You are stuck on a sandbar, it seems, a little less than a mile from a wooded island. A few thin columns of smoke rise from inland, but you see no signs of civilization on the shore.
The mast was damaged and the sail rended by the storm. You could survive without replacing the former, though it might give out at an inopportune date, and the women can mend the latter, given time. You relate the situation to Timonax, who confesses that he lost track of your course during the weather.
You could reach the island by the raft, and bring two companions, if you like. But if the island is dangerous, you might prefer not to risk your survivors. On the shore, you could fell a tree and make a new mast. Perhaps the inhabitants could supply a sail quicker than yours could be repaired.
>>Go to shore, with or without companions>>>>Why? To make a mast, explore, meet and trade with the inhabitants, learn where you are, something else?>>Wait it out while the sails are repaired, and hope the mast holds
