As the land turned rotten and the skies filled with ash, the people who once called this place home bemoaned their fate. Why was their world still in its death throes, after all these years? Why was it trapped in its cycle of rot and decay? Why did their destined end never come?
Though they may wonder, they no longer expect to find an answer.
=====
The Era of Man was slated to end with Four Horsemen crossing the land and scouring its surface clean. The Gods would follow this fate, slain by their hand and fading along with their faithful. And then there would be darkness. Naught but ennui, until the lesser gods and beings rose from the settling dust to fairly stake their claim over the remains of Noth. Thus, a new Era would then begin.
For generations before the end, melancholy settled over the prosperous world of Noth. Even as grand civilisations rose and expanded, and ivory towers sought to scrape the sky, the looming threat of annihilation cast a shadow over Humanity. Some refused to believe that their time was coming to its end. Others poured themselves into looking for a way out. The faithful consulted their pantheon of gods, seeking their divine guidance. But it was a futile effort, for even the gods were fated to be extinguished.
The skies grew darker, and the signs of the end times became more and more undeniable, Humanity held its breath and clamoured against this unfair destiny. Why did they have to die at all? Was there no hope of victory? While they scrambled to survive, The Horsemen rode across Noth, spreading their blights and leaving oblivion in their wake.
On the final day of the calendar, judgment never came. The doors of the churches and temples were flung open all at once, and cries rang out as the god-touched holymen tearfully announced that the end had been averted. For they had heard the joyous cries of their deities all at once, telling them to spread the word: Humanity would live on.
Whether it was divine intervention, the work of fabled heroes, coincidence, or a miracle beyond the gods, the Era of Man would persist forevermore.
