The Fruit of Knowledge - A Lobotomy Corporation Oneshot

A Lobotomy Corp Oneshot from the perspective of a veteran Agent.
Face the Fear. Build the Future. Otherwise, for what reason did you sacrifice so much…?

Time has no meaning. Pain has no permanence. Faith has no merit.

These are the three truths of Lobotomy Corporation, fragments of wisdom passed down from veteran to greenhorn.

The new hires don't understand, of course, though they might think they do.
Certainly, some may perceive the true weight of these words–but many write it off as sophistry, nothing more than a senior Agent trying to scare the newbies.

You may as well tell someone that death is inevitable. Everyone knows that they will die, but they don't understand.

Comprehension requires experience. Working in L-Corp, it doesn't matter whether they listen or not. One and all, the newbies will die.

The first death rarely takes more than three days.

By then, the Level Is would have already settled in, having cut their teeth on TETHs and the odd ZAYIN. A few that show potential - Level IIs and IIIs - might even receive an early transfer to the departments responsible for HEs.

They'll be cautious. Nervous. But at the end of the day, they'll feel confident in their efforts and their gear, finding comfort in their promotions as the proof of their efforts.

Humans that foolishly believe they can understand Abnormalities do not last long.

Fierce determination. Dismissive superiority. Dissociative apathy. Mute shock. Throughout the years, you've watched newbies respond to death in as many different ways as there are stars in the sky.

Even the stars are finite, though. You've been in here long enough to have counted every possible permutation of emotion.

By the end of the second week, over half will have died, and despite the toughened hides and hardened hearts of those who remain, the third week always, always claims the last of their luck.

Then, the Manager rewinds time, and the ones who've proven their worth get to do it all over again.
