You are the peerlessly talented, unbelievably skillful, and enviably beautiful Demonic Beast Huānliúxuè (欢流血, Happy Bloodshed/ Happy to Shed Blood), and the victor of the tournament held in the court of the now dead Crow King, Baoli-Wuyawang (暴力-乌鸦王, Violent Crow King), your final opponent into the opulent tournament he held to satiate his own lust for battle and bloodshed. Despite standing many leagues above you, both in cultivation and fighting experience, you ended the cruel rule and worthless life of your host, expertly countering his unrelenting hard style of martial arts and boundless, tireless aggression with patience and cunning strategy and flawless style that saw him brought low by his own ridiculous strength and frightening power. The Crow King's prowess as a warrior honed through centuries of life filled with killing, proved to be no match for your innate genius as a fighter and Daoist sage. His rage was his downfall, as you kept a clear mind and cool head while he rampaged and reveled in his anger, allowing you to redirect his blows and several land precise, crippling strikes of your own. Thus you, the great Huanliuxue, against all odds and common sense, defeated a foe so mighty and deadly, if he had landed a single serious blow against you, your life may have been ended then. But he barely so much as scratched you.
However, even though you've won the tournament and emerged victorious against a terrifyingly strong opponent, overcoming the otherwise insurmountable distance between you and the late Baoli-Wuyawang through peerless cleverness and great skill, your troubles in the underworld had not yet come to an end.
For, while you left Qiang to claim her own prize, you left to retrieve the treasure you were promised by the host you had slain in the arena he himself had prepared, and upon seeing the late devil king's foremost treasures and most valued possessions, including a preserved Sanguine Divine Spirit Peach, A manual penned by one of the greatest of all Scions of the primordial legacy you champion as its sole heir, a massive peal of collected primordial beast essence extracted from numerous beast cores, and a strange black skull so saturated with ghostly Yin Qi it could curse an entire region of the mortal realm, you had decided to take all of these high quality artifacts and materials as your own, knowing it to be foolish to leave even one of them behind to be taken or stolen away by potential rivals amidst the chaos of the Crow King's death.
Unfortunately, while you had already secured the Spirit Peach and sent your newest disciple, the ghost of the horned serpent Yujijiao to retrieve Baoli-Wuyawang's corpse before it could be mutilated and the many valuable parts and materials that could be taken from it ruined, you encountered one of these would be usurpers as you were leaving the treasury.

However, this stubborn bull was still drunk, even if he was much more sober than his underlings who were making a mess of the vault and stealing anything they could pry from the ground or walls. And so, he had the audacity to threaten and insult you, attempting to intimidate you by the number of your followers when you approached him cordially, having exhausted your stamina in the lethal battle against his former employer.
Having incited his men by painting you as a greedy noble seeking to deny the poor their petty alms, the Bull Devil, still dressed in his old uniform, sneered down at you, expecting your to either humiliate yourself and concede to his outrageous demands or start a fight to avenge the slight against your name and character. The wine vapor carried by his hot breath made your head feel like it was filled with wet med and pond sludge, but even with your mind so muddled and your ability to think straight clouded by the stench of liquor, you knew exactly how to deal with this lout and his stumbling band of drunkard demons.
You, after all, were a refined lady and were far better trained in the charismatic arts of speech and persuasion than this brute could ever hope to be, even if he was tutored by the finest etiquette instructor in the imperial court!
Sighing, you shake your head, and take a step forward, reducing the distance between you and his bulwark of intoxicated morons from four paces to three.
"I am in a good mood after defeating Baoli without a scratch" You purr, your voice low, radiating with dignity and danger "So I'll ignore your attempt at bravado"
The expression the bull devil makes is quite peculiar, stuck somewhere between outraged offense and terrified panic as he realize you won't back down and allow him to steal from you so easily, that his threats veiled by a gossamer of civility had been completely ineffective to the point you ignored them entirely and chose to treat him like a disobedient brat rather than a threat. Turning your head, you smile at him and lean even close to him and his thugs, yellow eyes narrowed and tail curling and swaying in the air behind you, jingling the magical bangle you wore on it.
"I have already picked the treasures worth of my station, so you can feel free to loot this place" You say dismissively, rolling your eyes and looking past the brawny demon, before changing your tone from dismissive to commanding "So merely step aside and let me and my servant pass"

Reality was rapidly rushing back to them, as the drunk fools realized how greatly foolish it was to threaten someone who just killed the boss who they had feared for centuries.
"Hmmph" The bull snorts, and you think you can see a cloud of wine vapor shoot from his nostrils as he lifts his head and grips the hilt of his blade "You nobles always have an ego greater than yourselves. That fight must've exhausted you, and even if you still have enough fire in you to fight, are you prepared for a battle when you are so greatly outnumbered? I respect you, Lady Bloodshed, so please, bow your head, learn humility and let us take what we're owed. You have no claim to any of the treasures in this chamber, you killed the man who promised them to you after all and you have no right to order us around like you've taken Baoli-Wuyawang's throne. I understand, princesses such as yourself are used to privilege, but you cannot honestly believe you are in any place to be making such bold demands, eh, Gege?""
He throws one arm to to the side, splashing and soaking the heads of his followers with the potent, bitter and stinking wine he's drinking. Your grimace, and lift your lips involuntarily, and so smell much more of the terrible elixir than you will have ever wanted to. He must think you're making so sour an expression cause you feel insulted, which you do, but not so much as to lose your composure and making a wrinkled, pouting face at him. He starts to laugh at you, and a few of his braver or more intoxicated companions start to as well.
So you fully release your spiritual aura, and the foreboding chill of the grave that constantly surrounds you turns deathly cold. The air stills, and all grows silent as the chamber begins to dim and darken. The smell of grave dirt and rotting corpses rises around you, joined by the smoke of incense and dusty old bones, the presence of a thousand ghosts surrounds you and and the impudent devils as black clouds of grudge smoke roll from your lips, roiling and crackling with the enmity and resentment contained within. Then, like a gale through a forest, the stench of fresh blood coils through the chamber, causing the streams of blood set in the floor to begin to bubble and flow as if they were infused with life once again. The scents of fresh spring growth linger beneath the aroma of unearthed coffins and the opened veins, as ozone burns and thunder rumbles as you breath out and glare at the bull devil, who is the only one of his pack to not be nearly made to kneel from the sheer pressure of your presence and revealed spiritual power.

If I have punched above my stage and faced a true master of sorcery and the martial way, then what use are these fools that see three of me rather than one?"
He stammers, and a few of his "guards" Step back, looking over their shoulders and trying to judge with their wobbly vision if they have time enough to run away and escape the incarnation of the quiet, relentless end all things that live fear, death. The Bull Devil snarls, and rattle his sword in its scabbard, threatening them to step back in line as you walk closer and now stand a pace away, breast to the shields surrounding the leader of this gang of drunks.
"One Huanliuxue is enough to topple the Crow king, what damage can three do?" You ask sharply, bluntly speaking as you tilt your head and frown disappointedly at the Bull Devil Leader, who turns away and tries to covertly remove his hand from his sword's hilt.
You snort disdainfully and look regally over his goons and smile, and ask them with a grim cheerfullness "Are so many of you willing to die so that your allies can enjoy the spoils?"
And so all of them turn tail and run away, dropping their weapons, abandoning their shields, and scrambling to grab and carry as many baubles and jewels as they can as they perform a stumbling, graceless retreat from the treasury vault. Smirking smugly, you turn to The Bull Devil
"Cowards! Traitors! Stand for our revolution, don't...don't leave me here!" He cries out in defeat, the fervor in his voice fading as all his drunk confidence drains and empties from his face, he sniffles and falls to the ground and sets about emptying his gourd of wine with tears in his eyes.
He breathes out, a way from you, a sorrowfully states "Forgive this beast of burden for his insolence, the wine spoke instead of I, I meant nothing of what I said to you, Princess, Forgive my dirty tongue and the threats it spoke, if it pleases you I shall pluck it out"
'Drunks are prone to fits of melancholy, just as they are to bluster' Your thoughts muse as you smirk and walk past the now well and truly drunk bull demon.
"Let me give you an advice: Artifacts, talismans and pills are to be aids in cultivation, not a crutch for power" You state sagely and much more kindly, playfully adding as you brush the devil's ox head with the tip of your tail "And try to not challenge those that are stronger than you, fortune does not always favor the bold. Come on Yi Zhu, I need to collect my student before this place falls completely to Anarchy"
"You called me your servant, is that an official statement of my new position, Lady Huanliuxue, most resplendent of all demonic beasts and most wise of the wise?" The greedy pig snorts as he wrings his hands together.
You huff and roll your eyes

Qiang lifts her head, and frowns
"Seems like one hell of a party we're missing" She says in dull jest "Shall we take out leave now, or shall we remain awhile longer in this battlefield of devils?"
"We'll depart at once, and return to our temple, before any big fish come to snap up the frogs and minnows playing at becoming dragons" You answer "Come along Yujijiao, I shall fulfill one part of my promise to you now, and return you to the world of living as my student"
"I've heard you have a grudge with a certain bitch as well, I'll be honored as your elder sister to share a bit of my revulsion for that ogress so feel free to curse her and air out all your grievances against her to me, alright, junior?" Qiang says friendly, speaking to Yujijiao in away she usually only uses with Fu or Hong. You smile, it is so pleasent to see your disciples getting along well.

>Study the manual written by Niu Bingwen. The old god on the mountain and the Cultivators in the past were surprised you were unable to take a human form, so it seems prudent to research a means to I would also prefer Lady H. to remain a cat most of the time, but there are advantages to being able to blend in with humans better, even for someone like us. For example, the Chuan worship us like a goddess for driving off the Ling, and if we ever want to become more involved in their affairs, or perform some higher level espionage, being able to shapeshift is a huge boon. Likewise, just because we start working towards a human form doesn't mean we have to follow the manual to the letter. Part of being a heretic means improving on established techniques that others would consider sacrosanct-- I'm thinking of, for example... taking a sort of hybrid/werecat form for battle, where we can cast spells with both our tail and front paws, because I imagine that's how we would get multi-casting.

Could we use the human transformation with our Enmity Incarnation to turn ourselves into an even more accurate avatar for their grudges? Seems like a possibility.

>>5334986 I think we should be wary of its time cost. I feel like there's a lot that would be wise to tend to before spending time to advance stage.
Like eating that pearl of beast essence and evolving physically prior to evolving spiritually. Or creating a Blood Qi cultivation area for our breakthrough somewhere hard to reach but available to disciples.
There was a similar choice called "Blood Empress' Springs", but it involved spilling and infusing our own blood in a process of altering the environment itself. What I'm imagining we can do with the fruit and our new knowledge would hopefully be more contained as a proper cultivation chamber. I can't think it would be easy, either. By our memory of the Peerless Sanguine Jade Shrine they had a whole orchard with one fruiting tree, and the methods they used for containment/growth were Earthen (an orchard upon the great hill of their shrine). I can't help but think we can achieve something greater than a dying garden with our better materials and deepened knowledge. Making it in the catacombs, just as, would be too counteractive. The logistics of building a quality wood & earthen focused chamber in or on the mountain above our sect are not light, but they'd be worth it if the materials themselves came from the primordial wilds.
That still leaves the mystery of form. The Jade Sanguine Shrine's answer was an orchard, our first answer was landscape altering wellsprings of Blood Qi infused blood. I don't think we want the form to limit the type of cultivated Qi, so it's a no to combinations with grudges and deathly yin if we want to keep the purity.
Blood Qi hotsprings? There's so much we could do I'm drawing a total blank. There's almost no limits, unless the fruit is wholly dead.
At the least, I think we should be wiser and more creative than a sect who relied on a fruit that takes 1000 years to grow.
>>5335059 We should try. We've managed extensions of our grudge techniques to all other abilities. And we recently learned why they can extend to all else, being one of many intrinsic forces to the nature of souls that itself persists beyond spirituality. Given the ability's nature is a mask then it can't be impossible to make it a costume, metaphoriphysically speaking.
Anonymous
>>5335095 Probably gonna need to pick up a little of the dank carmine mysticism to figure out how to make something a bit more productive than weird blood peaches from trees. And it'll probably require blood to be spilled to make it faster. Maybe some sort of blood grapes? Roses that naturally soak up blood qi? Freaky worms that wriggle and writhe in bloody soil until they're fat and juicy enough to wring out their sanguine qi juice?
There is a lot that could be done. But it's all gonna be pretty gross. For a squeamish human, anyway. Just gotta do some F U N experimenting before we come to a decision.
Anonymous
>>5335145 >blood grapes, blood qi roses, fat blood worms All sound amazing. And juicy.

>>5335152 Mentioning the tomes, what should we even do with the soul eater diaries? I keep thinking we should just burn the thing. Brawls have broken out, fighting spreads like wild fire and the static grey skies of hell echo with screams of pain, terror and triumph as every devil and spirit either fights to claim what little they can in the absence of a ruling power, or to simply defend themselves and what is theirs against the tide of maddened opportunism and ambition, before the other ruling families of the city can arrive to take order and pilfer what remains of the crow king's wealth and influence. You see no ghost or wayward soul as you make your way through the streets, probably because they have the good sense to run and hide when the denizens of hell are rampaging and battling against one another, rather than stand and fight. Just as the rioters leave you, Qiang and Yujijiao alone, keeping their distance by at least five paces as the three of you and Yi Zhu meander through the city as if touring through a serene and well maintained flower garden, rather than a warzone and field of smoke and fire. Rather, they are merely observing what little they can see outside of the Window you have left open.
Stepping through the doorway, Qiang falls to one knee, and sighs, placing a hand over her heart as her body struggles to adjust to the warmth and life of the living world after being so suddenly transported back into it after spending most of the day in the frigid and breathless atmosphere of hell itself. Yujijiao uncoils from your gourd and explores the tomb curiously as the clattering skulls you've gathered in the chamber flock around you like excited puppies, adorably snapping their jaws as Xiongji steps forward and offers Qiang a hand with a gentle smile on his lips, which looks anything but gentle and rather deranged considering a calamity level hungry ghost is smiling it. Qiang takes it and shivers for as long as she holds his hands, while the other fierce spirits you had gathered here surround you and kneel.
"I hope your trip into Diyu went well, Princess" Xiongji says, repressing his rage to speak cordially rather than threateningly or manically "Judging from the treasures you carry, I can only imagine you've found quite the windfall amongst the dead and damned"
"I'll have to share the story with you sometime, general, when you are not rampaging or walking a warpath against all of creation" You reply, returning his politeness and kindess in equal measure "But for now, you're free to return to your duties, all of you are commanded to return to your posts or offices and continue your responsibilities to my kingdom. The portal no longer needs to be kept open, and I have other business to attend to outside in the lands of the living. Try not to cause too much damage, eh Xiongji"
"I cannot make such a promise, but I'll keep my rage directed towards the enemy below" He laughs boisterously, clapping a hand on your shoulder before noticing Yujijiao at your feet and frowning "A new pet?"
"Student!" Yujijiao barks, incensed and clearly insulted by his words, but the mad general simply laughs and grins, blood dripping from the wound on his brow
"Sure" He says, before looking at something behind you "And what's that dinner?"
You glance back and see that Yi Zhu has followed you back home. Surprising, since you had just assumed he had been swept away by the crowds, dragged off by one of the many money lenders he's scammed, criminals he has cheated or was simply trampled.

And so you depart from the catacombs, using your gourd to smuggle Yujijiao out of it as you and Qiang step past the gate and the sword-woman bussies herself transporting the wealth you had earned today, taking it from the hands of the ghosts that had been so kind as to take time from their busy lives of madness and despair to help transport the thousands of spirit stones you had won. You decided to leave the caged souls in the catacombs, amongst their own kind, until you could decide what to do with them all.
"Now Yujijiao, you're the most junior member of my sect now, which means you will be expected to take orders and defer to your elders and superiors, even if they're younger than you are, which include the fire smelling wolf, the owl with stars in his eyes, and the sleeping turtle you might spot in one of the canals running through our subterranean temple. You smirk and lift your chin.
"In praising it's splendor, you are praising my genius, junior! It was my own vision that have made it so glamorous and beautiful" You boast, before you notice Lei walking by, still wearing the mask made in your image "Ah! Lei! Just who I was hoping to find! "Do I have to wear a mask like him, the terrifying woman didn't wear one..." Yujijiao mutters as Lei salutes animatedly and bows theatrically
"of course not, it is just one of brother Lei's many mysterious peculiarities, almost as great as the question of who pulled out his tongue, or why he has a devil sealed inside of him. Very mysterious, even for a monk"
"Mhm" Lei grunts, nodding his head as he looks to where he thinks Yujijiao is

<Elsewhere, in the mountainside manor of a wealthy family>
"Is it truly so bad, that we need to trust a monk as shifty as he?" the patriarch of the house asked his wife, who pulled at her hair, her face thin with worry and eyes distant with fear
"We have no other option, husband" She whispered in a frail, frightened voice "The temples and schools of the land have ignored our missives, they didn't even open their gates to the messengers we sent, and the gods our prayers despite us spending days in their temple. We have no other choice left, our daughter...she needs help, but the cultivators, mystics and holy men will not even listen to our pleas for aid, we have no other choice"
The lord swallowed hard, looking at his wife consumed by worry and dread, as the ghastly sounds uttered by their only daughter echoed through the quiet, empty halls of their home. Their servants had abandoned them days before, when his child's condition had worsened and the haunting grew more severe, days before the storm arrived, and with it the strange Daoist monk who came holding beads of bone and human teeth in a hand that looked like it had been taken from a corpse. He himself was a buddhist, not a very devout one, but he had always been warned by his nanny and teachers to keep away from Daoists, and now he knew why. The man...had an unpleasant aura around him, one he had only felt once before, when he came across the dead body of one of his more aged servants one winter's night.
The man...was he a man? felt more like a ghost than a man, more like a corpse than anything living, patrolled the halls and passages of the manor now, the lord could hear his footsteps echoing through the walls of the bedroom he shared with his wife, as she clung to his arm. She feared the monk to, how couldn't she. Just speaking with him felt like one was walking towards their own freshly dug grave.
The door slid open, and the monk with the pale arm wrapped in paper talismans stepped in, his eyes narrow strictly and observantly

But upon seeing you, she turned away from her work and removing the phoenix feather heating the cauldron with a flick of her wrist, sending a gust of icy wind to lift it from the crucible and bring it to her hands, which she had sheathed in a layer of tiny protection spells, that surrounded her hand like snow flakes falling in moonlight

One of the first of your people to cultivate and dream of ascending to the heavens!
The holy scripture, is called the Bestial edict to attain-Human form. And, so it is obvious it is meant to detail the lost and forgotten technique or magic Magical beast such as yourself once used to adopt the bodies of humans. Something that has never really interested you, as you are perfectly happy as a Housecat and proud to be one. But it was a part of the culture that had been erased, part of your history, and your legacy. After all, the Old god on the mountain assumed you had been abused or abandoned by your parents or teachers when you did not take a human form before him, and the past cultivators of the Peerless Sanguine Jade Shrine thought it odd you walked as a cat. It'd be unbecoming for a ruler to ignore their heritage and the past of their lineage. And it'd be shameful for a ruler to be lesser than their predecessors. Besides, changing your shape and masquerading as a human would sure to have benefits besides the sake of appearance, such as being able to actually blend in amongst humanity and hide yourself amongst them, or possessing opposable thumbs.
So, you sit down, and begin to studiously study the contents of the priceless relic of a manual you have found, so ancient it could serve as a bridge to the long hidden past of Demonic beasts.
What do you do for the next few days, besides studying the Manual, Huanliuxue?

Last I checked, Siwang was the only one who had an actual sense of his own path forward. Chuandapo may find her way eventually, but her lackadaisical attitude needs a bit more care than someone who is more self-motivated, like best-boy owl. Likewise, Huili is too whipped to do much more than follow orders, which is equally bad for his long-term development. We don't need to babysit them, but we should at least consider doing some course correction as necessary. As the proverb goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
>Decide what to do with some of your treasures I say we first take a look at the Beast Core, and see what properties it has, so we can use it more effectively, since I think that the level of boost you get depends on how well the core's qi meshes with your own cultivation. I would also like to know if it's possible to interact with a Core in any other way than just eating it for easy EXP. For example, could we maybe use magic to try to talk to the beast it came from, if there's anything left of their soul inside it? If it's totally inert, I wouldn't be averse to splitting some of the core with our students, instead of just eating the whole thing by ourself-- after, of course, assessing the stage of their training, and imparting to them that this great treasure represents the life of a beast like them.
>>5335751 IIRC, we get Beast Cores by killing another awakened beast and taking it from their corpse. We got our first one by killing Old Crooked Fang (Jiùqūliáoyá), an asshole of an awakened Tiger in the first thread. Given that we're here to win a place for our kind in the world, Beast Cores are somewhat difficult to come by for moral reasons-- being that Huanliuxue would generally rather not kill other awakened beasts just to make her own cultivation easier. Human cultivators also have their own cores, beyond a certain rank, but they're somewhat different in ways I'm not entirely sure about.

>>5335827 Meditate on the core and its nature to divine its potentials? Easy +1 to that, we kinda did similar stuff to the others before using them too. But you're probably on the money that this may be different. Finding out if it's just the power of many cores put together or something deeper. Baoli would have been refining this thing for a long time for a reason, and if not for the sake of his own cultivation only heaven and hell could know.
Beast cores are the magical and lifeforce energies of magical beasts, if there's any connections to the souls that have left its former bodies it may take some finesse, being a "refined" essence. We know beast cores have alternative alchemical uses, applications in spells and specific ability boosting. So my understanding is that it's a fundamental fuel source typed to its origins with all the applications that has grandfathered into it.
Meaning it can be used to boost cultivation itself as that was an option with the others, or even as part of material construction in grand arrays or cultivation chambers, or aid in great feats of landscape reengineering. In most of what I've read they're basically used as fuels for other things, sometimes even creating or "evolving" bestial bodies for human/demonic cultivators with various benefits and detriments, though only with other alchemical or ritual aids for surviving the process.
This refined pearl, to my understanding, should be the rocket fuel version of beast cores. It could definitely be more than that to the setting itself. Especially considering who was making it.

>>5335827 I think the beast essence and beast core are different things, because the first time we just grew powerful enough by winning a tournament, without having to cosume a core.
Or maybe not and the essence is like refined power of a beast core or something, xianxia has a lot of morally questionable shit in it.

>>5335746 But also, we didnt eat old tooths core, nor the Toads. We fought in the hell arena and evolved that way. So how did we do that? Why?

>>5336275 My bet is that beast essence forms inside beast cores as magical beasts grow stronger and older, probably some refinement of qi like the internal cauldron, but inherent to them.
So we would have evolved from that tournament by just getting stronger, and doing it in a qi heavy enviroment aligned to our law, since hell is full of death qi.
Continuing that theory, consuming beast cores would give a infusion of that essence, but I also think that perhaps it is less efficient depending on how different each beast is from eachother, since the pearl is from primordial beast, meaning a common link between all magical beasts.
So kind of like blood transfusion I guess. In this case I would think it would be primordial essence>same species core(cat)>same type core (feline)>other cores.

>>5336275 Well, that was because you refined your soul directly, as if you remember, that backstreet tournament Huanliuxue fought as a disembodied spirit, sapping and draining the spiritual energy/ essence of her opponents, which, when her soul underwent a metamorphosis, her body changed to reflect it
>>5336390 And that's correct. Most Magical beasts will evolve with age and as they grow stronger, which Huanliuxue did do by buffing up her soul
>>5335872 Beast cores contain Primordial Beast essence, every Demonic Beast begins with a little bit of it, which grows in quantity/ purity/ quality as they go through their lives
The pearl is not a beast core. It is a collection of Beast essence Baoli extracted from several beast cores, refined and crystalized. So it represents more than one Life.
The easiest way to gather primordial beast essence, is to slaughter and take the cores of awakened beasts, though as I said, it will just build up naturally as Huanliuxue goes through her life, aging and cultivating and growing stronger
But there are other ways to get an injection of Primordial beast essence besides murder or natural progress/ passive acquisition.

Our-Grandfather !!x2Y5mWD7k6q ID:SqBE5Tow Wed 13 Jul 2022 03:15:20 No. 5337221 Report And so the days begin to pass by, days which you spend mostly in quiet study and contemplation of the ancient manual. Devoting time you would otherwise spend training, cultivating, mediating or perusing some whim or sudden fancy that took hold of your mind, you instead use to understand and decode the secrets left behind by your great forebearer, the loyal ox who faced down a horde of demons in defense of his master, teacher and father figure, Niu Bingwen. Who seemed to have made the Edict purposefully confounding and confusing to ensure only those with sharp minds replete with insight and understanding could understand it. Some parts of it are written down in drawn out, ponderous poetry that you must read through several times to reveal the true meaning of it that connects to the bland lessons and lectures of the previous pages and that lead into the fairy tale stories and fanciful tall tales that follow it on the next chapters. Parts of it are written in code, dead dialects or simply written in ways that force you to have to turn the whole manual around several times in the process of reading it. It is an exhaustive text to study, especially for extended periods of time. Thankfully you're a genius, blessed with a high intellect and deep patience, so you have little difficult or issue understanding the teachings and concealed mysterious contained within the ancient edict, at least you don't once you've figured out the trick or found the key to reveal the hidden lessons and veiled wisdoms of each passage. You haven't even read a quarter of the way through it, and you're starting to understand the basic concept behind adopting, or rather earning a human form. Besides the various spiritual milestones and accomplishments, and the enlightenment and understanding one must reach and be illuminated by, from each of the lessons you have successfully and completely unlocked, it would seem the Edict's purpose is to teach the beast reading it how to feel human, to reach a revelation of human existence and nature that it intertwines itself with their untamed and natural, animalistic heart and soul. He refers to this as the second half of Awakening or the "True awakening" , the process that turned you from an unthinking cat into the glorious creature you are now, as it is often mistaken that awakened beasts achieve a human intellect rather than merely uplifting their own, bestial mind to rival those possessed by the proud hairless apes. You aren't exactly sure what that means, but you theorize it comes about from reaching an understanding of the seemingly illogical and insane thoughts humans think and the bizarre, unnatural ways they like to live. But you may be wrong. Attaining a human form is a kind of refinement, it could be that earning one is merely akin to awakening a second time, but rather than being sparked by a strong surge of emotion or sudden thought, it comes about by attaining comprehension and knowledge. But it would seem that some beasts just...without training or practice, find they can turn human one day with know idea how. And Niu Bingwen doesn't know why that is either, and theorize it could do with age, cultivation level or mere chance. It is a form of refinement after all, and there are as many ways of refining as there are stars in the sky. However, judging from the fact the Edict was written at all, Niu Bingwen found a reliable method to allow a magical beast to perform this refinement conciously. You just don't know how you would possibly do that yet, besides the inkling that it involves gaining an insight of human nature or humanity itself, which is naturally difficult for a beast. You're surrounded by humans, even have one as a mother, though admittedly Monu isn't much like other humans and acts more like a beast at times herself, but you still don't truly understand why they are the way they are or what has made them so...different than the other creatures of the world.
You sigh, tired and mentally strained from spending hours forcing your way through the needlessly complex arrangement of the edicts text and the riddles, games and tests it demands you solve before being allowed to glimpse the next crumb of wisdom it offers.
So you close your manual, and decide that, as the days pass, you'll take breaks to relax your head and enjoy the comforts and luxuries of your home. As well as the company of your students and mother. You really do need to get to know some of them better, and establishing a closer bond with them beyond the bond of master and disciple would simply be prudent. And perhaps, talking with the humans among them for long enough would help you understand their species, even if you already know them as individuals and people. Besides, its good for a ruler to be beloved by their subjects, and an empress should hold a special place in the hearts of their people. While you would already consider most of your students to be your friends and comrades (Some closer than others, admittedly) and at times think of them all as your kittens, some of them are closer to strangers to you. like Lanfen, Liu, Chuandapo, and Huili.
And as you think about idly spending the days with your students, and relaxing with your disciples, a stray thought passes your mind, reminding you that you have plenty of treasures that you need to decide what to do with besides letting them gather dust, even if they're in use like the phoenix feathers being used to in the forgers and alchemy furnaces, or the magical bear hide to cool the air without spells or drafts, but many of your and your sects possessions could be put to better use or any use at all really.

>>5337221 >>5337223 So humanization is a civilized, tribal mind, attained through spiritual virtualization to then be made physical? That would explain it being attainable through natural processes or time, even without knowing how.
So the full form would be that it's a comprehension block defined of tool creation and diligent abstract thinking combined with the depths of "tamed" emotions, the total of all being the barebones of the human spirit. This would explain why the text has games and puzzles, it's instilling unintuitive human virtues through example. Logically it belongs to the same categorical extension of insight achieved by the first awakening.
The first comes by strong thought or emotions as a step into true sapience, so it reaches that the second would require the ingredient of applied human wisdom; what signifies true comprehension and defines the fundamental difference between humans and all other animals. Good thing we've been to cities before, we'll be on the right track.

Chuandapo is burbling a song under the stream of water she's laying in, blowing bubbles in it and making it froth up while blind Hong nods along, tapping the heel of his foot into the ground. "Are you two singing together?" You ask curiously as you lift yourself from the ground and stretch out, nearly making Hong fall flat on his face even though he's sitting against a wall. Chuandapo just keeps bobbing her head and moving her flippers, and you realize she is cooling the shallow waters of the irrigation stream she has pulled herself into by circulating Qi through her flippers, gently lowering the temperature of the water, rather than freezing it, which shows she has passable Qi control already and has learned how to cast spells without having hands to form signs or a tail to usefully trace their characters in the air or soil. "Oh, Sister Chuandapo was showing me one of the talents the Spring Fairy Blossom she had learned recently, a song to sooth muscles and relax tension, which is quite the welcome care after I spent all day breaking my poor hands against boulders and walls" Hong says drearily as he turns his head in your direction "Supposedly, it also helps encourages natural healing" "You can just use internal energy for that" You state calmly, closing your eyes to listen to the song "And, its a recovery spell cast in an area that is as wide as the song travels, working by infusing ones voice with Water Qi after filling one's mouth with water and humming, right" "Woooow" Chuandapo drawls lazily, almost sounding as if she's about to yawn "No wonder you're the Matriarch, Elder sister, it took me over week to figure this spell and you were able to understand it from seeing it performed once, that's incredible. I wish I was that quick and smart" "Oh, well I know I am incredible, child, but I also recorded the whole of the manual you're taking your lessons from" You say happily "Glad to see you've made some progress, even if it isn't much" "We don't all have your work ethic and natural diligence, Lady Huanliuxue, the pace you set is exhausting, and little flipper is still a kid" Hong says sweetly, face flushing red as he smiles jovially "You don't need to make excuses for her, she's lackadaisical by nature, living a slow paced life" You say calmly "Stressing and worrying about things is troublesome" Chuandapo states plainly, with childish flippancy "I prefer to drift on currents, rather than swim. Big Brother Hong was worried you were upset with me, cause I don't like to work hard. I'm glad you aren't....I'd hate to disappoint the hopes you have for me " Cont

Protect you from humans? I'm happy when you progress, but that by no means means I am disappointed or angry when you stall in your cultivation"
"Oh" She says chipperly, her soft voice raising musically as she puts her mouth back under the water "That's good, I was starting to worry that you were, and I don't like to worry"
"And so was I, you can have a very frightening face at times, Lady Huanliuxue?' Hong pouts, clearly joking around "And I don't even have eyes to see it anymore"
"Must be nice, to be able to nap anytime without having to keep your eyes shut" Chuandapo sighs quietly, lifting her head up enough to speak "I always have trouble with that, especially when the sun is up, Its why I'm happy to live in your magic cave, teacher"
"Oh its wonderful, now I don't have to see Fu's ugly mug or worry if Qiang is planning to kill me, and Lanfen won't ask me if she's fat..." Hong blithely carries on, unconcerned with the unintentionally rude disregard Chuandapo had shown towards his disability, in fact, he seems happier because she's made light of it. In fact, it raises her spirits enough for her to muster the effort to crawl out of the stream and shuffle over to you, looking up at you with her big, adorable, innocent eyes.
"I am grateful for so much, for all you've done for me, I haven't been hungry since I got here. I know I'm supposed to be working hard and training harder, but its nice, even when I get scolded or dragged from that very nice spring" Chuandapo says, her joy raising her voice "I promise I'll try not to be so lazy"
"Changing one's self is hard than removing your shell" You state wisely, "Just go out your own pace, your carefree attitude hasn't become an issue yet, but you should take care that it doesn't. You have potential, and it'd be a shame for it to be wasted"
"Is that why you came looking for me, rather than leaving me to be...killed?" Chuandapo asks curiously, and a little sadly
"Of course not! Didn't I tell you when we met, I am a friend to all children. And even if you were grown, I would've come looking for you anyways, I would've protected you even if you were grey and old. For that is not only my duty but my joy. Now why don't you show me what Granny Monu has taught you, okay? And then we can get back to our napping" You purr, patting the concerned turtle on her head, her relaxed smile returning as soon as you assure her that you care for Chuandapo, rather than her abilities
"Oh, good. I was worried you didn't...I don't know. But I know I'd be happy to demonstrate my techniques... after a nap" She grumbles tiredly, pulling herself away from you to try and retreat to the cool water she had been laying in

"That sounds like a terrible struggle" Chaundapo yawns "But that just shows how incredible you are, Elder sister. I hope I can be like you one day and...prove my worth"
'There's nothing to prove' you think as you curl back into a ball, before looking up to Hong "Oh, and later today, I'll give you a gift for the diligence you've shown in taking care of Chuandapo and assisting in her training"
"Oh why I uh...thank you, Matriarch" Hong mumbles awkwardly "I don't really deserve, I've mostly just been keeping her from the elemental springs
"Maybe I'll give you my permission to enter the spring, and we can take a trip to the chamber tomorrow, eh?" You chuckle "Good work, though, keeping her from swimming in the spring itself. I'm glad you've been following the rules I've made"
"Why can't I swim, they're so sparkly and inviting" Chuandapo complains
"I'll explain it after our nap" You snicker, smiling as you hear the little girl huff and snort in irritation, splashing her flippers and throwing water everywhere
And so, you made a habit of napping with Hong and Chuandapo, whenever their training would allow them the time.
However, later that day, when it was still hot and Chuandapo was made to do spell drills by Monu, you went into the training Yard where Hong was relentlessly infusing his fists with Earth Qi, before slamming them into slabs of stone. Lanfen and Liu were there, both of them practicing their martial arts with their comrades who did not have the innate potential to cultivate.
"Your styles are different than Fu, Hong, and Qiangs" You state simply, after observing them fight for a few hours
"Your eyes are as sharp as ever, Sect head! Lanfen and I practice refined styles, favored by and solely practiced by the nobility. We've had lessons since we were young" Liu states happily
"It isn't as romantic or extrodinary as Fu's two axe style, or Hong's natural attunement to that spade of his, but its how we learned to fight" Lanfen states "And Liu is right, we were tutored to fight like this since we were kids. It...wasn't ever supposed to be used, though"
"Yes, it was just another form of expression, like poetry. Outside of the martial world, until recently, the kingdom had no use for soldiers, and Lady Lanfen and I had no strong desire to fight bandits until" Liu says with a dramatic sigh and roll of his eyes "Well, it was expected of me to guard her and follow her wherever she went, as my father had protected her father. it was tradition and"

"So he's like a dog?" You state again, cackling as Liu wilts like a dying willow and Lanfen pouts and furrows her brow, scrunching her nose as she tries to figure out how to explain it to you
"No its..its different. Having a lineage of servants that serves loyally through generations is a sing of benevolent, wise and trustworthy rule" She says slowly and carefully as you lick the back of your paw
"Sounds an awful lot like breeding dogs, to me" You say dully "Do humans do that to one another? It just seems odd that you'd be expected to serve a master, cause your parents served their predecessor, rather than choosing to follow them out of personal belief or account, that you'd allow tradition and expectation to dictate the whole of your life"
"It does kind of sound like breeding dogs now" Lanfen squeaks anxiously
"Oh it is said a court is often like a kennel or stable. Good courtiers and servants are hard to find, so they must be raised. And I do not regret following Lanfen, or devoting myself to her before we abandoned our responsibilities and inheritances" Liu says after sighing through his nose "I was, bred to serve, and raised and trained to do it. But I chose to serve Lanfen as a person, rather than the title she held, and so, found freedom in the life of a wandering Xia, and have found...enlightenment as a cultivator of Qi and a proper Daoist"
"You talk a lot for a dog" You tease, patting Liu on his brow "I think I understand now, though, thank you for explaining it to me, my juniors. Though it still doesn't make much sense why an entire bloodline would devout itself to serving another because one of their ancestors made an oath without thinking about it
"We paid them well, and treated them fairly. Liu is more like a brother than to me, I've never seen him as a servant' Lanfen pouts, puffing out her cheeks and crossing her arms
"Then why didn't you say that before agreeing he was kind of like a dog?" You ask, causing her face to turn almost as red as the robes she wears "And just paying them and being kind to them, doesn't seem like enough to earn the loyalty of an entire lineage, there must've been a deeper reason"
"Maybe we stuck around because of the history we shared" Liu ventures, shrugging his shoulders
"Yes! That's probably it" Lanfen says, as you consider that and smirk
"Could you tell me how this...relationship between your family and his began? It is midday, nearing dusk, when you find Huili leading his pack in howling at the sky for some stupid canine reason, and are shocked to find Lei and Siwang accompanying them as you take a walk up the mountainside, reflecting on what you've learned about the running of a noble household and the numerous, seemingly pointless variety of servants that are employed and the jobs they are expected to perform daily and how much work goes into organizing their schedules. And that its expected for at least some of them to have inherited their positions or been given one out of respect for their fathers, rather than earning them be merit and ability alone. Even stranger than some of them by themselves their stations and jobs, and spend years of their lives jockeying for higher pay or more respectable positions. The inner workings of the hierarchy of human society is baffling.
But not as much as Lei sitting on all fours, mimicking a wolf howling as poor Siwang watches in baffled confusion
"Master, I think Lie has been bewitched by Huili, how shall we proceed" The youngster asks seriously, whispering so as not to be overhood as he glides over to you and hops closer "Is their a proper punishment? Is this even a crime? I don't like watching it, but no one is being harmed except Brother Lei's dignity as a human being. Its disturbing"

She needs your wisdom and guidance, or else she may be lost to the wiles of her vices"
"Perhaps she seeks to grow strong enough so she can sleep all day without a care in the world or worry of being attacked?" You venture jokingly
"I do not think that is an austere enough purpose, but I know cannot judge her reason for being Chuandapo, rather than just a turtle" Siwang says gravely, taking you entirely serious "Even if I find such an ambition rather wasteful, and lacking the staggering conviction of your ambitions to once more rule the wilds, as is your destiny as wild nobility, Great teacher.

"You know I'm not going to beat you if you don't kiss up to me and kowtow everytime we speak right?" You say sharply "Tell me how your exorcism have gone, and of the ghosts you helped pass on and chase away. And Siwang, feel free to join in, and tell us how you punished evil"
And somehow, it becomes a nightly event, for you, Huili and young and eager Siwang to gather on the mountainside at dusk, and exchange accounts of your day to day lives, your accomplishments and difficulties.
When the moon rises, you spend awhile sitting out the sect gate, waiting to see if Fu, Feiqing or Ping return tonight, but eventually return inside, and find your mother and Yujijiao.
"A ghost cultivating" Monu says quietly, in deep though as she chews on her silver pipe, one leg crossed over the other, wearing only half of her robe as she sits upon a cushion as Yujijiao coils and slithers around the room "I've never heard of anything like that happening, but, no one hears about monsters taking human form or choosing one to be their mother, so it might just have been forgotten, just like the legacy of beasts"
"Which I still know nothing about, besides that being why I was killed" Yujijiao hisses uneasily "It wasn't fair..it just wasn't fair"

"I'm fine...I thank you for your concern, royalty like us should support one another like this" Yujijiao says with a sniffle
"And I shall support you, as you need special care, unlike your peers" You say soft as the touch of silk. Monu Nods sagely
"Most sects would abandon a case like you, but we live against the tide of their laws and choose our own way" She said with great resolve and confidence, her eyes narrowing with wicked intrigue as she curled her tongue around her pipe "We'll find a way for you to reclaim what was rightfully yours, and achieve what you were denied in life. I just can't understand how even an ogre could kill a little girl as a beautiful as you, it'd be like kicking sweet, innocent Chuandapo over onto her side, or clipping Siwang's wings. Just pointless cruelty and sadism dubbed righteousness and justice"

You lift your head
"I have an idea, but we'll need willing subjects or a supply of men who won't be missed. I've read in the Record of Wraiths and Phantoms, that ghosts can be stronger by stealing life force or breath, and Qi is at times called Vital breath. Perhaps, that is a way Yujijiao could cultivate? By doing the reverse of my method, and taking essence and Qi from living beings?" You venture as Yujijiao looks nervously at the glint shining from Monu's pipe "Mother, put your pipe down, its reminding her of the"
"Oh, forgive me child, I have a terrible habit, and can't stand to breathe clean air" Monu says sweetly, as she snuffs out the embers in her pipe before stowing it away as Yujijiao mumbles to herself for a bit before returning to her usual self
"So, you think I should try to absorb the breathe of humans?" Yujijao asks "And that might work to let me do...what you two do"
"Perhaps, its just a theory. Lei would volunteer, I'm sure Fu would and Hong might if he's in a gregarious enough mood, Qiang would if I asked her to, Huili and Siwang probably would as well, but it wouldn't be right to use your sect mates as cultivation material" You mutter "We'll figure it out"

>>5338620 You know it should be possible for us to give her a body by reversing our soul severing technique, tying the strings instead of cutting them. But it'd be a bit too grim and wouldn't be herself. If only we could construct a snake that would belong to her, with some divine materials and expert use of Blood Qi. But if her soul isn't ready for a body in the first place it would be a waste. They've got a hard road.

One thing I've noticed with all the beasts we've met is there is a sort of simplistic naivety to them all. Not so much in that they are trusting or unable to grasp concepts so much as their worldviews are very black and white and they don't seem to put much if any thought into them. Even Huan was like that when she first woke up. Things simply are as they are and that's enough.

>>5339140 I truly hope he's amenable to discussion, I wouldn't put it past him to pretend to agree and then use it against us in trying to find ingredients for their cultivation from our own people. Monu/Xuěbái/Jingyǔ connection aside which we don't yet fully know in character, it's a possibility we could convince Xuebai but imagining how fearsome her grudge is in how she's manipulated a cultivator like Jingyǔ is scary.
Learning how to take parts and alchemize them into becoming a living body with our kind of daos might require the spirit in question to learn the daos first or a transcendent level of alchemy in creating the kind of flesh that would actually allow a ghost to live again, as themselves.
The simplest answer is body reconstruction and possessive resurrection, but you need Qi in the first place to accomplish and survive both with an intact mind. The sheer material needs, too. I'm imagining that if we are even half-successful, she'll be the first cultivator under our law to be the one who proves our most esoteric theories of ghosts. Her struggle might actually become the formation of a whole new chapter in our own Law.

Lanfen says praisingly as she kneels before you, hands resting on her lifted knee as she bows deeply to hide how haggard and worn out she is from being woken up by your summons, by Yujijiao who spends most of her time at your side to learn directly from you, her better, how to act in a manner befitting her station as wild nobility and the basics of cultivation as you plan a means for her to safely attempt to cultivate off of the living breath of men or beasts. Lanfen, despite the bags under eyes and the exhaustion evident in her eyes and posture, smiles lovingly as she looks up to you. As she well should, for you are a radiant existence that blesses all who look upon you. "Tired, tired, so tired. I was having such a lovely dream" Chuandapo complains, eyes barely open as she lays splayed out on the ground, her head resting on the cool ground as she whimpers and pout "Forgive me, teacher, but can't this wait till morning, when the waters warm and the air isn't so chilly, I can barely keep my eyes open" "Chuandapo, you know it is a great privilege to be directed direct audience with the head of our sect" Lanfen coos, petting the sleepy turtle's head as she sniffles and looks up at you miserably, obviously trying to press the soft spot in the hopes you'll allow her to leave and go back to bed "You should be honored to be invited into her quarters, even if neither of us have any idea why she has called us here so suddenly. But I imagine it must be of dire importance, right Lady Huanliuxue?" Lanfen looks at you with eyes sparkling with anticipation and energy, and you find yourself honestly amazed by how quickly she could wake up and become full of life and vigor. "Of course, I've decided that you, out of all the sect's members, need assistance more than anyone else" You state openly and earnestly, not caring if you hurt their feelings with your blunt approach and honest evaluation of their abilities and work ethic "Lanfen, I'll be honest, you simply have no special potential, unlike most of my other disciples. This is a handicap you share with Liu. You simply aren't at all talented, and possess just enough potential to cultivate" Lanfen bows her head, frowning and immediately put down from her gleeful and merry self, like she had just been dunked in a bath of freezing water. "I...am well aware, matriarch" She says quietly "Compared to all the others, I struggle and flounder while they fly. But I am not ashamed by it. I am, eternally grateful that you would deign to offer me assistance, when I am one of the runts of the school" "Am I also a runt, Huanliuxue?' "Don't sound so gloomy, or you'll end up like your big sister Qiang" Lanfen scolds, puffing out her cheeks
"She always seems so peaceful and content, I'd love to be like her, without many cares in the world" Chuandapo sighs, reverent in her tone "Also, she's stronger than you are, so wouldn't she be a better idol"
"Eeeeeh" Lanfen says, looking away awkwardly as you smirk, amused by the little girl's disrespect, since she isn't truly wrong, just kind of rude "Well that doesn't matter! She isn't very womanly"
"I'm a turtle, what's womanly to you is scary and confusing to me" Chuandapo says after a yawn "So, are you going to make us train harder, or send us out somewhere scary to toughen us up"
"Please let me wait until Fu comes back if you are" Lanfen squeaks, pulling at her hair nervously "Just in case I don't come back, I have so much to tell him"
"That sounds exhausting" Chuandapo squeaks "rather than going on a journey, couldn't we just be given a special training regime or...I don't know, some kind of secret technique?"
"Yeah! Like the kind of training or method of meditation that'll make us miraculously stronger!" Lanfen says as you tilt your head in confusion
"Without all the work" Chaundapo asks hopefully, eyes filled with light as Lanfen balls her hands into fists
"Yeah, you must know many secret ways to become stronger overnight! Special exercises or forbidden prayers..." Lanfen excitedly goes on as you realize the two girls have read one too many stories, smiling and willingly yourself not to laugh at their naivety.
"Or just something we can eat" Chuandapo sighs hopefully
"Oh, like that'll ever happen" Lanfen sighs sadly, slouching forward and grimacing "Huanliuxue is gonna make us join her on her usual training and we're going to be pushed to teeter between life and death, like Fu and Qiang do constantly, or like Ping did to get that arm of his. But, I am willing to endure any trial, if it means I can stand equal to those I admire"
Chuandapo makes a distressed noise
"I..I would to, so I could repay Huanliuxue for saving and protecting me! Even though I don't like it, I have to work hard to make you proud" She whimpers "Just don't be too rough, despite my shell I am fragile"
"Actually" You cackle, making both the girls lift their heads, hopes and smiles restored

Chaundapo, who doesn't imagine you could possibly hurt or even raise your voice to her, just smiles blankly, awed and deeply touched by your gift, while Lanfen who can easily imagine the punishment you'd met out or your anger, as she has heard plenty of stories and tall tales of you even before meeting you, shudders,
"Split this in two, and eat it together. I'll trust the two of you to keep the other from becoming idle or indolent" You say sweetly as you tap a claw on the fruit "Cherish this gift, given from teacher to student, and reach for the heavens with me. I'd hate to see even the weakest of my disciples to fail. For, what would that say of me as teacher and ruler?"
"Thank you, Huanliuxue!" The say in unison. Lanfen cuts the fruit in half with a knife, and the two of them share it in an imitation of a bonding ritual practiced by some criminal gangs or particularly tradition oriented schools

Ping sat, wrapping his cursed arm tightly in bandages and talismans. His last job had been more treacherous than he had imagined, and he nearly had to resort to perform a spell of last resort. One that he had never preformed, for it would cause his "Ghoul" arm to fall out of harmony with the rest of his body, and cause it to begin sapping away his lifeforce once again. And without Lady Huanliuxue to save him, he would surely die. But, he was able to free the girl and her family of the trouble hungry ghost that had been haunting them, as well as the lesser phantoms that had followed it to their home without even a fraction of its evil intent. He was becoming stronger, and more skillful and exercising the spirits of the dead. And despite his efforts to keep a low profile, the "Pale armed exorcist" was a name that was beginning to equal "Two axe Fu", in fame. He was certain, if he would return to the retreat of his sect, he would be able to break his bottleneck and free his sworn brother from the curse that had prevented him from joining him on the road too immortality.

Ping was confident in his ability to break the chains around Lei's soul, and to advance from where he stood in the Qi Condensation stage, which he reckoned was either the seventh or eighth level though he might still remain at the sixth level, where he had been stuck since he left the temple (Huanliuxue could gauge ones rank and worth as a cultivator, with much greater ease than he could) , to the beginning of the foundation establishment
But, a strange feeling, like a premonition, kept him from returning. He kept finding new jobs, people who needed his help and expertise to do away with troublesome specters or dangerous wraiths, but that wasn't why he remained in the field. It felt good to perform righteous work, but something else he had yet to come across, kept him from returning home. He did not know what, but he felt it in his gut that there was a reason for him to search for and find, a work that only he could see done that he needed to be come aware.
And, at that very moment, he sensed refined Qi, the kind only a cultivator or one blessed by birth, would possess, and he lowered his head, hiding his arm and opening his ears
What he heard next, was enough for him to realize he had found the duty he had been searching for. The voices were familiar to him
"Cut apart like a mere beast, she didn't deserve to die like that, she had a bright future ahead of her"
"Wasn't one of the ling dogs?"
"No one but our own would know where our meditation grounds are, it had to be that rabid dog?"
"The fox's puppet you mean, he is a disgrace to our good name. Something should do something about him"
"How can we? When we're fighting a war? We can't waste any resource chasing a..."
The man he had once called his elder brother looked at him quizically
"Can we help you?" He asked, not recognizing him "This is a private conversation, you'll live longer if you..."
How could he ever had looked up to this worm? He had seen power far beyond him, and he had surpassed him. Without thinking, Ping had wrapped his ghostly hand around his neck, and he had began mumbling the earthbound sutras of two spells of his secondary law, the night lantern sutra. The Earthbound Sutras may have been the lowest tier of excorcist arts taught by the Night Lantern Sutra, but he had learned they were quite effective. Not as effective as his cursed arm, but effective none the less.
"No, I don't believe it is. What you're talking about deeply interests me" Ping stated calmly, pulling a talisman from his pocket as the other, weaker cultivator stood and reach for his jian. Ping flipped his talisman into the air, and burned it, Creating a night lantern, and breaking it open within the same moment.

A swarm of sparks and embers flew onto the cultivator, as he began to channel and manifest his Qi, frost covering the edge of his sword
He screamed as his robes bursts into flame, and Ping silenced his compatriot, whose throat was in his hand, by tightening his grip and circulating ghostly Yin Qi through his arm, sapping away the life from his former sect mate, who didn't even recognize him. Using his ghoul arm's unnatural strength, he lifted the man from the ground and discompassionately looked into his eyes as the other ran around the inn, trying to put himself out as burning butterflies pursued him.
"Now, if you would be so cordial to catch me up on the conversation you were having with just now, that you so rudely tried to keep me out of" Ping said calmly, as the veins on his arm, that now resembled magical symbols and script began to darken as if filled with ink "I may be able to solve your plight, with this accursed hand of mine. Remain silent, however, and it might just solve YOU instead"
The cultivator he was choking looked down at him, and his eyes widened with recognization
"P..Ping?" He coughed, struggling to breath "What..what's happened to you, to make...you become...this, monstrous. Why has your hair turned white? What evil have you done to become this..."
Wisps of black energy began to spill from his palm as it tightened and shifted around the man's throat
"I saw the truth of the world, and realized how blind I was" He said, as he began to conjure a sphere of pure Qi in his hand "It doesn't matter, brother, tell me who or what you were talking about in so hushed of a tone, and I'll be merciful and allow you to continue to live in ignorance of the TRUE form of cultivation, hurry, I am doubt I am skilled enough to keep from blowing your head off with the destructive energy in my palm, since I haven't had much pracitce using it....yet"
"Jiangyu! Its Jiangyu! Another talentless failure like you! He sold his soul and became a monster! You remember him? He's entirely forsaken his humanity! As I pray you have not! This arm of your reeks of devilry! You have not been enlightened you have been" the cultivator cries out, as Ping simply, mercifully, dissipates the Qi blast he was charging and instead pumps him full of Yin Qi, to be certain he'd be too weak and ill to follow after him. Just as the other daoist would be too burned to chase after him, and would similarly spend weeks if not months recovering

A spear flew past his head, crackling with malicious magic. He caught its head on his palm, and sent it flying back, encased in lightning. It impaled its thrower, who was then struck by a bolt of iron hued lightning.
"I see, you shall not be swayed" Feiqing said with a pained wince "I am sorry, but, I must be selfish, and defend myself. Please find it in your heart to forgive me"

<Elsewhere, in a remote inn>

<elsewhere, on a desolate road>
"Please! Please! I have money! Lots of money!" A fat merchant cried out, the mole on his nose quivering as his four chins jiggled as the shadowy figure that had been slaughtering his guards walked towards him, two axes dragging on the ground as he hummed, a familiar tune. The one he taught his working girls to hum to calm down their younger girls
"I don't care about money' The young man said hatefully "bribing me will only make me angrier. Men like you disgust me, you know? Mistreating women, selling girls to men who beat them to death, either for pleasure or because they forced a baby onto them"
"Mon..money, women, power, I..I could get you a place in the imperial army!" The man squeal, falling to his knees and putting his hands together in prayer as the bandaged man stepped before him, and he recognized him from song
"Tch, why would I want to work for a dynasty that serves false gods, and not even well! The current ruling family has lost the mandate of heaven" Fu sighed heavily, eyes piercing and filled with contempt "And you have lost all your protectors. Nothing is stopping my axes from cutting off your head, can't you hear them? All calling for your execution, crying tears of blood"
There was nothing but silence
"You're crazy! I've...I've done nothing wrong! I was satiating vices! I never hurt or even killed one of my girls! How is it my fault if my clients were too rough!" He screamed, as the figure of legend laughed and held out his arms. A strange, black mist swirled around him as his eyes glow red with the fires of hatred.
And then, there they were, ghosts of dozens, if not hundreds of women
"You poisoned my baby"
"you left me to choke on my own blood"
"Watched me drown in the koi pond"
"Sold me to a murderer"
"Got me addicted and threw me to the streets to starve"
"Made me watch them rape my sister, then buried us both under the stables"
"He fed me to his dogs, fed me to his dogs!"
"Too cheap to buy me medicine, you worked me to my death"
"Never hurt any of us? You threw me down the stairs!"
"Broke open my skull!"
"Slit my throat!"
"STRANGLED ME!"
"You said you loved me..."

"I'm an executioner!" was the last thing he heard, before the immense weight of two axes split his body into four pieces.
Fu sighed
"Actually, Wusheng is also an executioner, now that I think about it" He said quietly, as the girls he brought along with him surrounded the corpse on the ground, and began to rip and tear at the soul still stuck to it "Thank you, for lending me the strength of your resentment, hope you can drag that evil bastard down to hell with you"

Our-Grandfather !!x2Y5mWD7k6q ID:SqBE5Tow Mon 18 Jul 2022 11:05:06 No. 5343614 Report Hours pass into days, and slowly days turn to weeks, as you continue to diligently attend to your research of the Edict left behind by perhaps the greatest and once most renown and legendary of your ancestors. The Loyal Ox Niu Bingwen, the first purposefully awakened animal, who died battling against the demons and devils men now wrongfully believe your kind to be kin to, to save his master and father. One of the first beasts to become daoist, and one of the earliest to cultivate and dream of one day breaching the heavens. And while he never achieved the immortality all cultivators strive to attain, he left behind a far grander legacy than temples that would have been left to fall into ruin or burned to erase his name from the memories of even the most devout of men. The Bestial Edict to Attain-Human form, is a treasure beyond any other, a relic of the time when men and beasts stood as equals and understood the other to be their fellow daoists and good rivals if not dear friends. And within its age worn, time yellowed pages their lies great wisdom, wisdom which you have become well acquainted with in your tirelessly study of the Manual forgotten, forsworn and forbidden to the followers of the heavenly orthodox. While the reading is made grueling by all the riddles one must answer, puzzles that need to be solved and stories whose meaning must be understood before the next step of the lengthy, exhausting lesson left behind by your horned forebearer, it is also comforting, to be able to admire the handwriting written by the hand of a great daoist sage long dead, and bear witness to the wit and brilliance of a beast often thought to be dull and simple. Niu Bingwen, truly possessed a exceptional level of intelligence as well as a rarefied erudition of the hearts and minds of others. And, from his playful prose and clever use of games and puzzles as a teaching tool to help the reader train their mind and broaden their understanding of what he's written, so that they may uncover further insight hidden behind the veil of children's stories and tests, easing the student separated from him by centuries, into the more advance and complex portions of the Edict's teachings and its more confusing principles. You already respected the long dead bull for the courage he possessed, and the dignity with which he died, but now you realize, that he while he was a great warrior and pioneer of martial arts, mysticism and cultivation techniques still widely practiced, you also now know he was also an amazing teacher and scholar of not only daoist philosophy, but also more mundane subjects, including history, sociology and psychology. Fields of expertise that surely must have at least partially allowed him to frame and format his lessons and the tests that kept them hidden to allow a wild animal like yourself to grasp the otherwise mysterious form of human thought and their understanding of the world. An revelation of humanity, and all of the oddities of their character, beliefs and ways of life. The secret of Human nature and the difference between it, and the more natural existence of all other mortal creatures.
And you have greedily devoured all of the knowledge that can be taken from the Edict, and absorbed all of its wisdom, having played its games, completed its tests, read its stories and poems, conquered its puzzles of logic and lateral thinking, and deeply pondered the quandaries Niu Bingwen purposefully left unanswered, concerning morality and self determination of purpose and drive. The Manual has truly been the most troublesome text you have thus far encountered in your life, difficult to understand, and harder to truly comprehend, but you have overcome the challenge it posed, at last. Or you're reasonably certain you have, and that there aren't any other riddles you overlooked, mistaking for just a outdated phrase or odd choice of words, but like the writer of this text, you possess a towering intellect! So it is practically impossible for you to have missed even a single drop of knowledge. The Edict has been wrung dried! All of its wisdom laid bare, and the insights recorded within plundered!
Now, all that must be done is for you to meditate and contemplate these insights and refine the wisdom gleamed from your hard, tiring research, and surely you'll do what no magical beast has done for at least ten generations! Attain a human form, and follow in the footsteps of the previous scions of the primordial legacy of beasts and the wilds, all wise and venerable daoists, who you will one day stand amongst...no! Who you shall one day eclipse with the grandeur of your accomplishments and illustriousness of your deeds! Huanliuxue will be a name that echoes through time eternally, as the greatest beast to ever live! As she who returned Awakened Beasts to their proper place and station within the world of cultivation.
But, before you could surpass your glorious predecessors, you would have to attain what all of them had, and become able to take on a human form. To show you were worthy of the mantle of heir of the primordial legacy of all beasts, and capable of bearing the weight of the crown of Empress of all things wild and untamed!
And what better way to understand human nature, logic and wisdom, than living amongst them as one of them! Yes! Your heretical law allowed you to take a shortcut no other could take, by leaving your natural body behind, and taking control over a human body, you could more intimately and closely observe humans in their natural habitats! Which would make contemplating the insights you already have concerning the spirit of humanity and civilization!

You aren't going to unleash some terrible plague again and then humiliate me in front of handsome men again are you?" She asks snappily, without authority and mostly out of fear and concern for the reputation and good name she has earned herself, as well as her pride and shame.
"Not intentionally" You cackle, before frowning and looking over to loudly snoring body that you've just realized is laying next to you, and tap your chin "And why should it matter if I act foolish in front of pretty boys and beautiful men, while pretending to be you, don't you already have a mate"
"Yes, but it still burns to see a handsome face scowl and look at me with scorn and contempt, its painful to see them wonder what's wrong with me and think I'm some kind of crazy woman because you think its funny to mess with and annoy them!' Yuyi shouts in her head, as you find a mirror and begin to come and tame her chestnut colored curls, brushing her messy hair into a more presentable style, before beginning to style it to fit a more suitably elegant and refined look, lifting it up to form a bun that, do to only having watched Lanfen and Monu style their hair, you have to secure with two, rather plain and boring hairpins you find on her dresser.
"That doesn't make any sense" You growl, as you part her bangs and fluff up the end of her hair hanging down her back, splitting it into four equal portions, which your loop over your ears and secure under your bangs for a properly regal style suiting a princess such as yourself "I can understand caring about your appearance, or what others think of you, or keeping from losing face, but it shouldn't matter if whose judging you is attractive or not, just if their opinion matters"
"That's why their opinion matters to me" Yuyi says gloomily "But, you aren't going to humiliate me in pursuing whatever plan of yours requires the face of a plain, village doctor to accomplish"
"I see, I see" You say flippantly as you try and understand the purpose for all of the various kinds of make up laid out before you, as Yuyi squirms uncomfortably, worried you'll waste or missue her collection of beauty products "And I shouldn't. See, I figured, I should try and figure out how to become human, and to do that, I need to understand how you humans live and think"
"That doesn't fill me with confidence that you won't make a fool out of me" Yuyi sighs defeatedly "How exactly do you plan to do that? Just pretend to be me again, and make everyone in the village think I'm a rude woman?"
"That is a good question!" You shout, as you search through her wardrobe for the dress you wore the first time you took control of this body, cackling as Yuyi whimpers and pouts in the back of your head
"This is going to be a disaster!" She cries out and wails "My reputation as a dependable doctor will be ruined!"

How exactly do you plan to learn how humans think, Huanliuxue?
>By living Yuyi's boring life, after telling her partner that you've possessed her, and that if he tries to cheat on Yuyi with you , you'll do terrible things to him. And figuring out how humans live together and how their relationships and bonds differ from those of a Cat will surely help you figure out how they think! >Traveling, making up an excuse to anyone who asks you need to travel in search of some rare medicine, while you're actually contemplating the many ways and places humans live, to try and understand civilization, its rules and common sense, what being Civilized actually means. Also, "speak" to the various, dumb cats you find, and figure out how being domesticated changes an animal. >Use Yuyi's reputation as a doctor to earn herself a position in a noble family's employ, reasoning that nobility will be easier for you to understand than the lower classes. After all, you're royalty! So it only logical, after all. Surely, humans of finer breeding and high standing will be better teachers of what it truly means to be human! >Talk with Yuyi and have her guide you through her daily life, and once she has taught you all she is capable, possess someone else in the village, and learn from them! That way we can still be haughty about it without sullying her reputation, since it's understandable if the local god ask you specifically to do something.

Our-Grandfather !!x2Y5mWD7k6q ID:SqBE5Tow Thu 21 Jul 2022 10:39:36 No. 5346843 Report You take no time at all to prepare yourself to head out into the world, preparations that begin with applying a restrained amount of cosmetics to keep Yuyi from complaining too much about how much you use or take with you to keep the face you're sharing looking as stunningly elegant and beautiful as is possible considering Yuyi's self admitted plain and rather dull looks. You can polish a stone as much as you want, but it will never become jade, but you put in a lot of effort to look at least some what presentable and radiant with what beauty can be found or revealed with what make cosmetics Yuyi "allows" You to borrow to use to feel more comfortable in her skin, like she thinks you would ever entertain the idea of, let alone tolerate actually wearing so much powder, lipstick, mascara, eyeliner and other kinds of makeup that it is rendered a rigid, lifeless mask devoid of the natural beauty you are graced with and Yuyi is sadly lacking, since while it would be a blessing to replace her humble features with a façade of dolllike beauty! YOU would be the one feeling the weight of the several inches of make up restraining and constricting your face, at least if you follow the standards fashion adored by wealthy girls and noble women. You look in the mirror, listening to Yuyi mourn meekly that you've powdered your face with the palest powder she owned, and have used her most vividly red rogue to bring some color back to your cheeks and to draw markings upon your exposed forehead and still whitened cheeks that resemble the elegant patterns of your fur, before painting and glossing her full lips an even deeper shade of red that, judging from the squeak Yuyi made when you coated it on to resemble your natural feline smile in the hopes of matching its beauty with her smile, must've been one of the more expensive beautifying tools in her collection. Tapping your nails on the mirrors surface, which you have tapered to points with a file and clippers and painted red and black as befitting your royal, you change your expression, pouting and then smiling softly to see how different emotions look with the styling of makeup that you've applied. Quickly adjusting the stray strands of hair and tightening the bun you've made with it to reveal more of your brow and make certain now swinging or falling locks would smear the makeup or get in the way of your piercing eyes, which, now peered intently at your cheeks, as you intently searched for any of Yuyi's unseemly freckles that may have escaped the snow white powder you spent close to half an hour carefully, and meticulously applying. Once you were satisfied that you no longer looked plain and mousey, and had salvaged as much beauty as was possible without Yuyi crying out in complaint that you were wasting her cosmetics and thus money, or having to endure the rigid mask of beauty that many chose to subject themselves to wear out of shame for their own lacking looks, Cont

Our-Grandfather !!x2Y5mWD7k6q ID:SqBE5Tow Thu 21 Jul 2022 10:40:50 No. 5346845 Report >>5346843 You finished your preparations by packing Yuyi's most beautiful clothes and a satisfactory supply of medicine, or at least as much as her weak arms could carry in a chest, which is much less than you wish you could bring, but alas, the strength of your body is far beyond that of Yuyi's thin arms. And because Yuyi asked politely, you leave a note for her lover to find in the morning, detailing the explanation the two of your came up with together that her absence from her house and the village is because she left in search of a rare and expensive medicine necessary to treat a made up illness of a wealthy and respected client who is too ashamed to enter her store personally and in public.
With that taken care of, and most of Yuyi's complaint and worries addressed and buried properly, you set out in the dead of the night, the small chest of clothes and medical supplies held in your arms since you couldn't find a rope to secure it to your back, a sharp knife hidden under your dress, and a heavy, undyed cotton cloak protecting you from wandering eyes and the chill of night.
And quickly realize you'll need to carry a lantern, since human eyes are much weaker than a cat's. But that only delays you a couple of minutes, and it only takes that long because lighting it takes some trial and error, though learning how to strike a spark and make a fire without Qi is a valuable learning experience. So, you set off, the road lit by the sputtering fire of the lantern in your hand.
The first few days of traveling are boring, as the nearest village is some distance away and Yuyi's legs become tired remarkably and surprisingly quickly. Thankfully, you manage to reach an inn before you collapse and buy a room to rest in as you plan your route through the nearby villages and cities in a way to maximize your exposure to the different lifestyles humans lead, and the variety of places they live in, so you can reach a more complete understanding of civilization, the unspoken rules most humans follow, and the common sense of their society, which will lead you to understand what being civilized actually entails and means.
And if it is in anyway different than domestication, which your not entirely convinced it isn't, since you spent a few hours talking to the old mouser and her litter of kittens that live under the inns floorboards, well talking as much as an unenlightened beasts can, which meant you had to try and remember when you were a simple and stupid beast to derive any kind of meaning from what they "Said" beyond the basic meanings of "Go away" "Pet me" "Feed me" "I'm big and scary! Don't mess with me" "You Smell strange and look strange for a cat" or "This is my turf! I'll bite and scratch you"
Which makes you realize just how far "human" you already are, at least compared to the mundane, dumb housecat you once were.

Our-Grandfather !!x2Y5mWD7k6q ID:SqBE5Tow Thu 21 Jul 2022 10:41:51 No. 5346846 Report >>5346845 Clearly, consciousness and sapience aren't possessed by humanity alone, but is what separates humans from all other beasts is that they're born intelligent? Domesticated, tamed cats clearly aren't smarter than feral ones, just more trusting and less on guard, more openly affectionate. Which is similar to how humans who live in "Civilized society" are different from those who live in wandering, nomadic tribes. Well, besides the ones in cities, who are if anything less personable than their barbaric cousins or rural counterparts. So, is that the secret? That civilization is just human domestication? While it makes sense, you don't think its accurate
Living a civilized life changes a man as much as being tamed and domesticated changes a beast, both in personality and perspective. And you're pretty sure if a human child was never taught how to be human, they'd be much like any other animal.
"So why do they think and act so differently than all other creatures? Awakening supposedly imparts a "human mind", according to the Edict" You think out loud "Which must refer to sapience and conscious thought, which, obviously, aren't truly "Human", since I and all the other demonic beasts I know remain closer to animals in most ways...though my juniors are noticeably more naïve and instinct driven than I am, and when I had just recently awoken, I saw and understood the world like they do, simply in black and white. So, is the second awakening then, just reaching further comprehension of and attaining a wisdom similar to the "Common sense" of civilized society, achieving deeper insights of the self and the world? Is that what it means to feel human, to be human?"
You frown, wincing as the pain from the scratches you received from your lesser kin sting and burn, and crashes your train of thought
"ARRRGH! I'm getting no where!" You shout, falling back to the chair you were hovering over "Yuyi, you have to have some insight to human nature and existence, to that undefined human spirit and feeling I'm looking for!"
"I...I'm sorry but I don't know how to help you here" She whispers meekly "I've always been human, and before I met you, I never imagined a cat could be as wise and intelligent as a person, or far more so in your case! So I don't really know what it means to "Feel human" or what separates us from wild beasts besides that we think and feel"
"All animals feel, even the unawakened ones. Its just their emotions are simpler, and more driven by instinct" You mutter, scratching your clawed up arm in thought and to try and ease the irritation of being scratched "But the purpose of this journey is to answer these questions I act, I'm just being impatient, asking you to provide them.
"Cause your subjects scratched you to ribbons?" Yuyi asked coyly
"If they had seen my real body, they would've obeyed me without hesitation' You hiss in annoyance "And even in yours, they recognized me as a fellow feline"
You frown and cross your arms

"I don't know" Yuyi squeaks unhelpfully "You just started raving at me, and I can't really walk away when...you know, you're possessing my body"
"Well, my point is, I have no reason to be impatient!" You say, standing and gathering your things as quickly as your able to "Though I have to hurry if I want to reach the nearby village before night falls"
<span class="mu-s"> [Encounter! Bandit troubles!] </span>
"What happened here?" Yuyi asks uneasingly, clearly worried for her body's well being as you walk through the street of a seemingly deserted farming village, which is as silent as a grave but more empty than one "Do you think its abandoned? I've heard lots of villages were when the season of cataclysm struck...or is just emptied because of the war effort do you think"
You sniff the air, smelling smoke and blood. Frowning, you walk up to the nearest house, hearing feet shuffle behind the door and raise a fist to knock on it, only to have it swung open and a sharpened stick thrust to your face
You grab hold of it and glare at the trembling old man holding it
"That is no way to greet a guest" You say angrily "Why are you and everyone else hiding away in their homes? Are you scared of something? A sickness perhaps? or do you just think its too hot out to work today"
"What is a noble lady doing here, in our humble village" He gapes, as if he forgot he just shoved a crude spear in your face, but he's old, and the elderly often forget things, so you won't hold it against him "You shouldn't be here, even if you were poor, it isn't safe for young, pretty girls like you to be!"
"Why is that, is there a ban on femininity in place?" You ask as you walk inside the house, and see that there are four more grey or white haired men sat around a cooking fire, sharping sticks, dressed in outdated and poorly maintained armor "Or is there one on youth? Are there only old men living here? What's going on"
"He's right! It isn't safe, even for royalty! Whatever escort you brought won't keep you safe" One of the old timers shouts "You should turn back, and find a different route wherever you're going"
"Why!" You say loudly and haughtily, crossing your arms "Just tell me what danger has gotten you and the rest of this miserable village so scared"

Curious as the why men would turn to a life of crime and villainy rather than head home, find the bandits and ask them why they chose to be bastards yourself:2
Leave Yuyi and instead possess the leader of the bandits and interrogate both him and his underlings. If you can peacefully resolve the situation do so, otherwise go full slasher villain on them.:6
So, you'll leave Yuyi behind in the village, and instead possess the leader of the bandits to interrogate him and his underlings, and see if it would be possible to peacefully resolve the situation.
Update will arrive shortly

Our-Grandfather !!x2Y5mWD7k6q ID:SqBE5Tow Tue 26 Jul 2022 23:19:50 No. 5353029 Report "And why have they done such terrible things?" You ponder out loud, stepping further into the hut, as the old, decrepit villagers gather around you, fretting and worrying as you, the image of courtly and regal grace, glide into their dusty and cluttered abode. "Because they're bandits, I think we should listen to them, Lady Huanliuxue" Yuyi speaks up as the men try to convince you with praise and compliments, realizing that you're the kind of noble lady who is unusually headstrong and brazen. It's kind of endearingly sweet, that these men who have never met you before are so concerned for your well being, and not only because of your wealth and standing. And amusing, that these humble farmers, weighed down by age and tragedy are more virtuous and just than the gods they've been praying to for salvation from their plight and oppression, both brought about by their fellow men. But why are they worrying so much for the well-being a stranger? And why have the villains who've taken over this village decided to become brigands and cutthroats instead of simply returning to their homes? You can imagine why they've taken the women and girls of the village, and thus why the men worry about the young lady wandering through it, even if they do not know her. At first glance, you thought it was simply a protective instinct, that some creatures of the world feel towards the young, even if they're not their own or even the same species. Humans are after all unusually empathetic and are quick to develop bonds, even with beasts. But that instinct to befriend and empathize, to protect and guard those weaker than one's self, isn't why they're fearing for Yuyi's safety. It isn't an instinct, its a societal belief! That woman and girls are fragile and must be protected! And that it is the duty of men and boys to protect them, even if they aren't related to them or known to them. These men, morale and kind, even though they are weak, waste their breath and energy to try and keep a young girl they've never met safe. That is admirable, and for some reason you cannot place or define, so pleasing to you it brings a smile to your face and warmth to your cheeks. Despite realizing why they seek to protect you, and thus reaching further understanding of human, nature, you cannot fathom why soldiers, fighting men, chose to lower themselves to live as common, petty criminals and thugs and to terrorize and abuse others when, if they were already running from their responsibilities, abandoning their honors and oathsworn, why they simply didn't return home. Do humans forget so easily that they became lost so quickly? "Young mistress, please, this is no place for you. Our plight is not worthy of your attention, their is no reason to risk your health and chastity to linger here" The first old timer pleads, falling to his knees and clasping his hands together as if praying for a god to come down to talk some sense into you cont

We'd be worthless as men, if we let a fragile flower like you, just bloomed, to throw herself into the sea of fire, and walk the mountain of blades that has risen around us" Another of the band of geriatric defenders cries out, with tears in his eyes "We could not defend our daughters, but maybe we can protect you. Please, Young lady, listen to your elders and turn back"
"Hmmrph" You huff, closing your eyes tight and furrowing your brow, lifting your lip as if to growl. It just doesn't make any sense, and these doddering, if well meaning, fools couldn't possibly explain why things have ended up as they have in this village, or answer why men would willingly degrade themselves and choose to be so barbarous. But, the bandits themselves clearly could.
"We're not going to march up to their camp and demand answers, are we? We only have a knife! And far too pretty a face!" Yuyi squeaks in a panic "Please, Lady Huanliuxue! Don't become careless with my body, or endanger my life! You might be fine being a ghost, but I still have so much I want to do in my life"
'oh don't worry, you'll grey your hair quicker if you spend all your life stressed. I wouldn't dream of putting you in so much danger, for so petty a curiosity and so sudden a whimsy. I am fond of you, after all, and it'd be a waste of the talents I have imparted upon you' you think, trying to comfort and ease the now panicking Yuyi, smiling motherly as you do 'You can stay here, protected by these fine gentlemen, and I'll go and ask the bandits myself. And see if I can end this conflict without needlessly shedding blood! I'm certain, had I been born a human, such efforts would be praised and apllauded'
"huh?" Yuyi gapes
"Oh I'm so terrified, I feel as if I may just faint!" You cry out, placing the back of your hand on your brow, staggering and swaying forward as you as you relinquish your control of Yuyi, entering the air as a ball of free floating fire and ghostly light, bobbing gently before you transform your spectral form to appear as a giant, ghostly cat! An exact copy of your mortal body, colored white, black and red.
Then, as Yuyi faints from the shock of suddenly having the control of her body returned to her, and she is caught by the frantic arms of the men surrounding her, who begin shouting and crying out "Young Mistress" and "Young Lady", asking if she is alright, you walk through the wall of their hut, and begin to follow the unseen trail left by the bandits through the village and into the wilderness.
The enmity and resentment of the girls they've kidnapped is easily traced back to them, as the thick, black clouds hang low to the ground, roiling with hatred and impotent rage and shame. Floating through the air, you maneuver yourself through the branches of the trees and soon come across a shoddy wooden wall.

>>5353031 It is built out of spears and poorly carved stakes, lashed together with belts and strips of crudely cut leather.
Moving through it, you find tents of all shapes and sizes, pitched and arrayed in a misshapen rings, each centered around a large, free standing fire, around which men dressed in tattered and shoddy armor meander idly or lazily lounge, drinking from waterskins or gnawing meat from haunches cut from the legs of ox, pigs or even chicken. Some of them hold in their arms very clearly distressed and terrified women in their arms, howling with laughter and flirting as if entirely unaware of the disinterest and blatant fear they're being regarded by. You glare angrily at the louts, making sure none of them are being too forceful in their affections or monstrously trying to force themselves upon their stolen dates. Fortunately, it doesn't seem any of these men have descended to such a depth of wickedness yet, no matter what other crimes they have committed.
Keeping a close eye on the crude festivities of the bandits, to both make sure none of them get too touchy or rough with their captives and to make sure none of them are wearing the colors or insignia of the Ling family, you drift closer to the center of the camp, figuring that the leader of this band of scoundrels and charmless brutes would be in the innermost ring of the camp, were it is safest.
And, you soon find you were right, as you spot a tent as large as a generals sitting in the exact center of the ramshackle fort, and looking inside, soon find, upon a great number of a furs, a brute of a man with a large belly, bigger than both Fu and Feiqing at the shoulders and certainly at the stomach, sleeping sprawled out, still dressed in the regalia of a general. He has an untidy and gross beard, soaked through with wine and with pieces of chicken stuck to it, and a shaved, scared head. You sigh in relief, as you see he didn't take any of the women or girls he kidnapped to his bed, and instead see a mangy mut curled by his side, biting at its fleas as its master snores loudly, sounding more like a boar than a man.
Shuddering, you mentally prepare yourself to enter into the gross body of the bandit cheer, steeling your resolve and summoning up all of your composure as you force yourself inside and take possession of it. He immediately begins screaming, and tries to flail his arms to fend off his unseen attacker, but its useless, as you've already taken full control of his body. His dumb mutt looks up at him, with thoughtless eyes, and doesn't notice the change of ownership of his owner's body.
"Oh shut up you" You spit, sitting up and scratching his ugly beard and face, finding that he to is infested with fleas and incredibly itchy. Already you are becoming irritable "I am a demonic beast, if you don't stop screaming right now, I'll devour you alive"

It's like he took a bath in a cooking pot! Gross! Gross! Gross "Eh? What are you doing here! We haven't done nothing wrong!" The brute gapes "Surely we've done nothing to attract the attentions of a devil" "Not a devil, a demonic beast" You correct, wagging a finger before returning to pull and claw at his cheeks, nearly being driven mad by the itching "And you've kidnapped girls, robbed their village of food and wealth, and burned down the shrine killed its priests, and while I may scorn the gods, I still think its low to kill a holymen, especially when they're innocent!" "Those shaved head monks were asking for it! And we didn't steal nothing! These are our wives and those were our taxes! That village is under our protection!" The man shouts back, whimpering as he tries once to break your hold, and then realizes just how vast of a gulf stands between himself and you in terms of spiritual power and will "They...they tried to pick a fight with us! We couldn't take no disrespect, especially from monks! And these girls came with us willingly! They gave us their food" "Did they do so willingly?" You ask sharply he goes silent. "Well we asked" He says guiltily "They could've refused! We didn't rob them!" "Like the priests tried to? What did you ask of them?" You say coldly, toying with one of his fingers, and showing him how easily you could break every bone inside of it if he made you wait too long for an answer "We left them alone! and they called us criminals!" He cries out as you break the first bone "Do you honestly believe that?" You ask, as you move down to the second bone in the finger "Or are you just trying to excuse your unlawful behavior? You already deserted the army you served in, surely admitting that your a bandit, kidnapper, murderer and thief is less shameful than acting as if you're an honorable, righteous man wronged and mistreated by those you've kicked around and bullied" "Why would a devil...KYAAAAAAAH!" He cries out, whimpering as you break the next bone in his finger, humming calmly as the shock of pain travels up his arm "Demonic beast, I wasn't born in hell, so I am no devil" You say sweetly, as if correcting a particularly dull witted child "Do I need to ask again?" "Why is leaving behind an army marching you to your death so wrong! I wanted to save my men from dying like dogs! The Chuan have abandoned their lands in pursuit of vengeance! Even though so many calamities have be fallen the whole world! They should've stopped fighting once they pushed the Ling back over their borders, not chase them all the way back to their homes!" He snarls as you wiggle his finger back and forth "I forsook my duty, abandoned my honor and dirtied my name to come back across the border, to help those in need" "Oh, so you're just an idiot" You say, as you break the third bone in his first finger and move onto the last Cnt

"Because you're an idiot! How can you excuse kidnapping girls to take as your bride, how is that protecting them? how is that helping them? How can you be so blind to see yourself as chivalrous, when you're bullying an entire village?" You ask as you begin bending the finger back to snap the bone
"Why would you a de...demonic beast care! And who have we bullied, we came and offered our services to them!" He blubbers "I'm telling the truth, nothing we've been given wasn't gifted to us"
You pause, as it slowly dawns on you that...maybe he actually believes what he's saying, that he's convinced he and his men haven't done anything illegal or immoral. That the villagers weren't cowed and intimidated, and thought they were demanding food, gifts, brides and whatever else they have taken. But...its obvious they would be? Wouldn't it? Wait. Humans senses are rather dull, they could easily mistake a false smile and fearful hospitality as being genuine! They wouldn't be able to smell their fear, or hear their dread if the villagers tired to disguise it. And if the chief is this stubborn and dull witted then...then how stupid are the rest of them! Do they honestly not realize how terrified their "Brides" are, that their smiles are just masks? Or can humans just convince themselves of any lie, rather than face an unpleasant truth? Surely Cultivators are able to? Do mundane men capable of it as well?
"Are you truly so ignorant?" You ask curiously, blinking his eyes rapidly as you move his finger back "Or are you simply rationalizing your barbarity and denying the truth of your actions. Do humans so hate being in the wrong, that they can so easily follow their own lies?"
"What are you talking about? Our only mistake was the temple! I didn't mean to knock over the Brazier , and my head started hurting when the monks began yelling" The man cries like a child "It sound so much like the screams of men trampled like horses, I panicked! Please don't break my finger! If this village was under your protection, I'm sorry for not giving offerings or asking your permission to become its guardians! We never asked for anything! They brought everything to us! We didn't steal even a single grain of rice!"
He'd have to be one of the greatest actors and liars of their era if he isn't being honest now, if those tears he's shedding in the back of his own mind aren't real.
"I'll be back in a moment, if you scream, I'm eating your bowels while you're still breathing" You command, snapping and hissing as you flee his body, and possess the next bandit, interrogating him the same way. And then move onto the next one once your satisfied, and then the next one, and the next one, and so on and so on.

You begin to feel slightly guilty, for your harsh method, but that is quickly forgotten with disdain for how stupid and ignorant they all are! If even one of them was a true villain, actually cruel, you would feel guilty for the rest, but they are all so coddled and spoiled, they never realized they were doing wrong or harming anyone!
They're all second or third sons of noble houses, or men who volunteered to join the Chuan army, believing fairytales and old records of battles and wars written during generations of peace, and then, when they couldn't bear the reality of conflict, never thought that they'd appear as bandits! And only a few of them realize just how much trouble they'd be in, and what punishment would await them, if they went home.
They're dead men walking if anyone recognizes them! And the size of the misunderstanding between them and the village is so great, its giving you a headache! But...at the very least, you've been given a deep insight of human perspective!
What do you do now, Huanliuxue?

>>5353038 >Possess the bandit chief, explain to him the reality of their situation, and see what he'll do with that knowledge. We've always tried being an authority to these things, but what we're looking for to grow is examining humanity itself.
Let's check the extent of his by providing the opportunity.
We should probably attempt to be as nonthreatening as we can manage to not sway him too much. To answer the question that If this is a true and complete misunderstanding, where does that bring these pieces of humanity when it is clarified, or I guess more accurately what will they bring themselves to and how.
