Believed cursed by his latent magic ability, Pilaf was thrown by his Human parents from the wealthy Fort Bilwart down the fierce Hulta River, descending into Cyclops territory, where Pilaf was originally intended to be collected as a sacrifice by the wilderness. The local Cyclops chieftain declined the delicacy he found in the river, for his council of war mages advised him of the overflowing magic power of this young baby human boy... Within just a few years, Pilaf was trained to be a superlative Cyclopean war mage, learning spells of deafening thunder, horrible plagues, and resistance to the harsh nature he was supposed to be sacrificed to. His first raid draws near, and as an outsider who has been accepted into the tribe, he is excited to earn his place.

The noble Cyclops Gil'Nar'Gak never became a blacksmith or soldier, due to his subpar performances in the tribal coming of age tests. As such, he was chosen as Pilaf's watchman and guardian, leading the two to quickly become great friends. Though Gil'Nar'Gak's skills with a hammer are as rusty as his actual hammer, Gil'Nar'Gak has long been unsatisfied with his civilian role in the tribe, and wishes to return to war and craftsmanship. But so long as the current legacy family rules the title of tribe chieftain, he'll forever be disgraced with his current position, or so he thinks.

One day while gathering firewood for the blacksmith's billows, "Gil" (as Pilaf calls him) passes by the chieftain's war tent. He overhears secrets of the upcoming raid on Fort Bilwart, the tribe's boldest effort in several decades. The advisors and chieftain himself are all laughing savagely about how they plan on using Pilaf as a decoy and a sacrifice so they can trick and kill more humans. Hours before the Cyclops army begins to march, Gil steals Pilaf away from his bed and runs deep through the Hulta Forest with a few supplies. Pilaf wakes up and cries and complains. So eager to join the war effort, he won't listen to Gil, whom he insults as not even being good enough to be a blacksmith.

The argument stops when a team of Cyclopean assassins appear in hot pursuit in the Cliffs of Yestermorrow. They are past talking, and simply throw forged lightning bolts at the fleeing duo, ending their argument and uniting them in a fight against their pursuers!

Bonus: Begin with a choice of Pilaf and Gil's auxiliary abilities and traits.

The evil sorcerors of the rebel Humanoid armies thought they could eradicate every living mutant in the trade city of Patriot, and they came pretty close. But they left behind two big problems that will challenge their authority. Retreating far away to Mount Freedom, two hardened mutants lay low and train while their homeland is turned into a perverse shadow of its former self. Once a city that rejected no lifeform based on race, as long as their money or soul was pure, the new ruling rebel Humanoids have continued their continent-wide sham war on mutants and abominations, while claiming to be saviors and liberators in the ruined and oppressed city of Patriot.

Slugger the Younger is a mutant child of famous Elven political lineage in Patriot, grandson of one of the founding fathers of the multiracial trade beacon of the East, the once-unifying city that contained saints and salesmen of every kind. Now it's Slugger the Younger's turn to bring about independence to his homeland. On this journey is also Ringo The Gifted, the retainer of the deceased previous ruler of Patriot, a mutant who was publicly executed by the rebel humanoids. Ringo was perhaps the strongest warrior of Patriot before he was excommunicated. Now, he works as Slugger's right hand man, keeping him inspired to free the occupied city of Patriot, and perhaps even take the throne once they do so together.

The mutated pair trains hard in Mount Freedom, far to the East, in hopes that they will find the strength to take their city-state back from the clutches of evil. One day, a magically summoned messenger bird finds them, asking for their help. Someone claiming to be a sorcerer who ran out of mana stuck in a well near a popular landmark just a few miles away. It seems like a trap even to the naive Slugger the Younger, but Ringo instructs his young pupil/liege that it is a call to action that cannot be ignored, and shall be a fitting test one way or another. Besides, the time has come to bring the training to a close.

Once they get to the well, it's as they suspected, an ambush... Time to see if training paid off. Slugger is as resolute and perhaps even a little less fearful than Ringo is for the coming challenge. They themselves ready for combat! Will they be good enough to reclaim their kingdom?

Bonus: Ringo begins with a choice for a new focus on this mission. Slugger begins with a choice of a sacred artifact of nature, the symbol that protected the City of Patriot for decades.

Fearing she would never see her beloved again, the wealthy Ewania long ago tried to achieve the powers of immortality and necromancy, but found amongst the trinkets and tomes and tablets were only the curses laid from failed necromancers of the past. The worst of these was the Curse of Claink. Once a beautiful Humanoid woman, Ewania now clanks and grinds hideously everywhere she goes, a horrifying twist of flesh and metal. She wears a helmet and full body armor to hide her appearance so she can commit to looking like a robot, but the Humanoid smell is hard to cover... She longs desperately to rid herself of her mechanical status before she forever becomes unable to turn back to a human. Slowly over time, she loses more blood and flesh in exchange for lubricant and sheet metal.

Ewania's hope currently lies in her travel partner, Shlomo the Shaman, as he calls himself, though he's really more of a travelling salesman. On top of his bartering skills, Shlomo has a vast knowledge of arcane topics. He claims to know just the seventeen artifacts Ewania could use to turn back into a human from a machine, they just haven't come across any of them yet. Having travelled the continent thrice over looking for answers, this team still languishes in failure. Still, Shlomo remains ever-jovial, ever-boisterous, and ever-mysterious.

Shlomo is never seen without his machine defender Earic, not even in the latrines. Earic doesn't say much, but he hears everything, and he has a special artifact attachment that allows him to share knowledge with his sage-like master. On top of these eerie traits, Earic is also an excellent guardian in melee combat who can shrug off nearly any status effect, though he has several weaknesses to magic and a limited skillset. Earic has overseen many a business deal, and he now watches Shlomo and Ewania drink the local Grizvald township specialty purple tea. Earic scans the area...

Uh-oh, here come some angry customers Shlomo sold that "genie lamp" to, a few hours ago. Looks like it's time to hightail it out of Grizvald before the crew gets recognized and put in stocks or stoned or hung for all of their past crimes. Earic tries to warn his party.

Too late, they've already cornered and started shouting at Shlomo in the cafe...

"Vwat? Zis lamp iss ze real deal!! Eet'z jazt zat vwee've used all ze vwishes already! Vwahahaha! No refunds!! I told you zat already."

Shlomo's hostile response doesn't slow them down, only arouses anger from the customers and suspicion from the guards. Here we go again! It looks like we've got a fight on our hands before we beat a hasty retreat to our next destination in the Wilted Woods!

Bonus: Begin with a cart full of useless curios and relics, and a choice of which 2 of Shlomo's magical trinkets actually work, and a choice of Ewania's other curse.

Born and raised together in the cushy kingdom of Bilwart, two young men forge a friendship during their mandatory service in Bilwart's Town Guard.

"Pop Eye" the thieving archer is a ne'er-do-well stuck in paradise, pilfering without prejudice or fear from his own countrymen, who always end up simply blaming Pop Eye's thefts on unnatural foes like the Birdmen of Baravor, or the ever-present society of Sewer Slimes. Pop Eye tolerates his current military role only due to his sanctioned ability to occasionally stick a feather in the heads of the dirty creatures roaming on the outside of the city walls. The same creatures who killed his parents and left him to be raised as a suffering orphan.

"Jackleg", in short, is a play boy. He shirks responsibility as breezily and mysteriously as he woos the woman of the day. He's been pressed into service as an officer in the Town Guard, set to receive Paladin status, if he can ever master or even show proficiency with holy light magic. That being said, Jackleg's sword arm is strong, and his baron father's armor from his days in the service is a perfect fit for Jackleg.

The two young men met in the training barracks before they were assigned their jobs, but after being assigned their Town Guard codenames. They made fast friends through their similar sense of humor. The upcoming advancement ceremony draws near, which will decide the fate of Pop Eye; if he is fit to be a professional sniper or tactician, distinguished as a brilliant mind for his bravery... Or simply fails and becomes a part of the adult orphan workforce, basically akin to the slave class in Bilwart. A fate worse than death, some protest.

Jackleg, being from a rich family, has no sense of the weight of this job on Pop Eye, but remains his friend as he tries his hardest to avoid conflict of any kind, especially armed conflict. Pop Eye tries not to impose his difficulties on anyone, and would never want to show weakness to his equally macho friend, Jackleg. The two enjoy a pleasant sunset on top of the battlements of Fort Bilwart, until they see an unnatural army approaching through the forests. Jackleg panics and announces his intent to flee, while Pop Eye tries to encourage him into the fight... Bilwart is under siege!!!

Bonus: Start with 600 gold worth of equipment from a list for Pop Eye and 1,500 gold worth of equipment from a list for Jackleg, already equipped before they enter battle.

Plunged into the frigid waters of Lake Rel, the extraterrestrial known only as Dendro is saved by two alien lifeforms. These lifeforms are Dendro's primary means of defense, and his ancient species' specialty creations. Composing of a slime-slick tentacled, hovering body, Dendro is somewhat reminiscent of a floating pink land octopus. His meaty tentacles writhe as he awakens to a ruckus! He starts coming to his senses, but he's still fuzzy from the crash and adjusting to the new planet's atmosphere. Dendro's creations fight to protect him, but will need his help! The battle roars of the local Winterwolves cut through to Dendro's heartsacs.

Dendro is an otherworldly summoner who studied and specialized in the creation of lifeforms, specifically two types so far.

The first is a warrior class; an equally foreign and slimy, fleshy, spherical eyeball, about a foot and a half in diameter. It has perhaps a dozen or so slim dangling tentacles which help it to move around. He never gives them personal names, but Dendro calls this type the "Slitherers", because this race of abominations cannot float like him, only slither. They aren't super hardy or smart, but they can wallop enemies into submission or a fearful retreat.

The second type is much more quick and ambulatory, but much less powerful. Dendro calls these scouts the "Creepers", for their ability to phase through doors and walls and creep anywhere they please, something even Dendro can't do. The downside is that these formless, ethereal wraiths have trouble enacting their physical will upon the world, instead relying solely on inflicting statuses and utilizing their weak magical attacks.

In minutes, Dendro is finally acclimated to the climate of this world, and enters the fray to help his summonings crush the Winterwolves!

Bonus: Begin with enough supplies for several weeks, and a choice of a piece of powerful alien combat technology that was on Dendro's spaceship.

"Why? Why did you curse me with... whatever curse this is!!!? A robot shouldn't have to suffer this... No one should... You will pay... Get ready to die." Velor prepares the pistons in his arm to deliver a deathblow to the miniscule, lumpy, purple-skinned abomination named Sin that he currently holds by the misshapen throat.

Without speaking, only telepathically communicating, the mutant called Sin magically transmits another gift into Velor's crusty circuitry. A gift further enhancing the awareness he already bestowed upon this Golem. The promises of what could be, the fortunes that await him if he can just escape, with or without a partner! Visions of what will happen when the Stone-Tek Exterminators discover him... Velor focuses his mind energies to show the Stone-Tek robot known as Velor just what will happen with a special brand of clairvoyance...

In the demonic electronic voice of an elite machine known as an Exterminator, at first in a telepathic vision, then just down the echoing hallway: "TWO SENTIENTS DETECTED. MUST EXTERMINATE."

"...Two ...Sentients?" Velor puts Sin down and stops choking him.

This time, with his real voice, Sin says "You know it to be true. You are no longer an automaton, you have as much free will and freedom as I do, now."

The door begins getting cut down with plasma torches. Sin has been greatly weakened by his imprisonment and his gift-giving, not to mention the strangling, but he continues in a rasped voice, "So, now that you've received my gift... Will you throw it away? Or will you do as I do, and fight to keep it with all you've got?!!?"

Grateful, scared and supremely confused, Velor the Golem assists Sin the Mutant, and they both pop out of the maintenance closet they were, in so they can escape the robots who tracked them down by their sentience!! It's no use, they've got to fight their way out of this place!

Bonus: Begin with customizations to Velor's machine body and Sin's non-magical combat abilities, as well as a potent bargaining chip: information on how to destroy this nightmarish facility you're trapped in.

Notes about Tempest Undone:
Continuing with most popular campaign choice in ~24 hours. Using "homebrew" setting and combat rules. There will be dice.
Campaigns not chosen will still "happen" during the quest, leading to likely crossovers between the campaigns, or ripple effects being created from their actions.
Explanation for pictures: I typed in "father" or "dad" on Dall-E Mini and was so amused by the results, I decided to write backstories for a small number of the ones I found most amusing.

Under the leadership of King Erlwin Bilwart the 4th, humanity has led a harsh war on the other races of Ung.

Fort Bilwart, though it is a shining gem of technology and relative peace within its high walls, is an oppressive city inside and out to any non pure-blood human. Generations ago, in efforts to keep up with the massive economies of Aeon and Wellall, King Bilwart the 2nd instituted a banishment of all non pure-blood human races, quickly followed by an "indentured servitude for overstaying their welcome", basically an enslavement. Even decades later in modern day Bilwart, the hierarchy remains the same.

"First And Foremoste Are Ye Human Royalty;
Nexte Are Ye Humans of Goode Sociale Standings;
Nexte Are Ye Domesticated Servants (amended to elaborate that this means ye robots, ye human criminals and ye human "undesirables");
Nexte Are Ye Sentient Slaves;
And Finallie, Ye Mutant Slaves and Ye Mindless Beasts."

So says the "ancient" text.

Pop Eye tries not to think of how he could descend from Goode Social Standings and wind up a Domesticated Servant if he doesn't do enough in the service of the Town Guard while he's young and capable. He'd never be able to reach Goode Social Standings againe. But he also doesn't want to get sent off to some stupid war to die in.

Pop Eye eats a piece of jackalope jerky he pilfered from a fellow guard, and continues trying not to think about his squabbles. He wouldn't want to compare his situation to his friend Jackleg's, who he walks side by side with as the sun sets. In or out of his old man's polished armor, Jackleg is one of the most attractive men on the Town Guard and practically in all of Bilwart. But that's not why "Pop Eye" is truly jealous of "Jackleg". Jackleg's family has long been teetering on the edge of Goode Social Standings and Royalty, pretty much since the rule of the first King. The current administration has been giving his family favors, and it's clear to many that Jackleg's family will soon ascend from petty baron-hood and be elevated to official Royalty status in some capacity, likely as a lawmaker. If Jackleg becomes a Royal, he could never be seen calling a Domesticated Servant a friend. He would disgrace his family name and all the Royalty of Bilwart... What if the two never see each other again after their mandatory service in the Town Guard? The thoughts that creeped in while Pop Eye was chewing the sour-tasting meat are interrupted by the handsome knight in shining armor.

Jackleg: "Where did you get that salted meat? Nevermind, I should know not to ask by now! Just give me a piece, will ya?"

Pop Eye: "You doubt its origins? What would you say if I told you I hunted this?"

Jackleg: "And smoked it yourself, and held on to it this long? I doubt you have the patience!"

Pop Eye: "Yeah, whatever, you knucklehead!! Maybe I summoned it with my mana! Ha-ha, at least I have mana! How are you going to call yourself a Paladin?"

Jackleg: "My pal gets in every night! When's the last time you even unsheathed your dagger?

Pop Eye, confused: "What does that even mean? And I don't have a dagger, since I'm an orphan, I have a bastard sword!"

Jackleg, confused: "What?"

Pop Eye, standing his ground: "What?"

Jackleg, reluctantly reassured: "No. Turn around, Pop Eye!! LOOK!!! How did we not hear them coming?!"

Mere miles away from Bilwart's city gates is a swarm hundreds strong of misshapen and differently abled bodies, some with magical powers, some with weapons, others with just banners or trumpets, all working towards one goal.

The Mutant's Independent Liberation Force will reach the gates of Fort Bilwart at their full force in less than an hour. Within just minutes more, they are already casting spells and projectiles at the walls.

Pop Eye gleams an opportunity in this chaos - make a name for himself here, and he'll be in Goode Social Standing for life!! He doesn't harbor hatred for mutants like most of Bilwart does, Pop Eye hates the wild beasts that killed his parents. To him, the mutants are just unfortunate pawns who picked the wrong place to mess with. They can't be that dangerous, could it?

Jackleg is already stripping down his armor to fit inside of a barrel so he can hide from this whole conflict.

Pop Eye: "Would you get out of there!!"

Jackleg: "B...But I'm scared!! I don't like fighting, you KNOW that!!"

Skills and Spells do just what they say. Non Skill or Spell attacks are typically weaker than their counterparts.
You know how HP works. MP too, I assume. You'll need items to replenish those in most cases.
These other stats have secondary uses, but typically they serve to modify the combat dice or pass difficulty checks in some way:
STR is physical power, CON works as defense against physical attacks.
DEX is for avoiding physical attacks and replaces STR for some weapons.
INT is magical power, WIS works as defense against magical attacks.
LCK helps with many abstract things.

Quick rundown on equipment and usable items:
The party shares a "Bag" at all times that holds all of their equipment and usable items. Anyone can access the contents at any time, even during battle.
Usable items can restore HP, MP, improve other stats, deal damage to enemies, inflict good or bad status effects on targets, and more.
Each character has 4 slots for equipment: Armor Slot, Weapon Slot, and x2 Trinket Slots.
These items and equipment will impart stats or abilities to your characters, Keep track of which items are equipped or used and how they alter the characters.
For example, Jackleg's Old War Armor alters his stats in the following ways, on top of his current stats: (+2 CON, +1 CHA, -2 DEX)

It's up to you whether or not you want to equip different items. In fact, it's time to go shopping, isn't it?

What items did you bring with you to defend Bilwart?
Pop Eye has 600 gold to spend. Jackleg has 1500 gold to spend.
Technically they can pool their money together and buy anything they want and equip it however they like.
Remember that Jackleg's Armor slot is already full.

1-2: A truly mutated monstrosity, lurching 10 feet tall. It seems to be a melded mesh of several species, capable of many attack types, and resistant to magic.
3-5: Three very-slightly mutated humans, obviously mercenaries with little will to fight. Includes a mind-mage, an archer, and an axefighter.
6-7: Two lowly Hob-goblins, mere flesh-warped melee practioners from the Greenskin race. Accepted into the Mutant's Independent Liberation Force simply because no one had the heart to tell them they would only slow the whole operation down.

Allies
1-4 One Town Guard ally, "Skunk", a new recruit who was assigned as a Gate Spearman.
5-7 Two Town Guard allies, "Skunk" the Gate Spearman, and an experienced Wind Mage who is just about to finish his contract with the Town Guard, known by his codename only, "Razzle".

Pop Eye, however disinterested he is in warfare, seizes the call to battle, and urges his best friend to come with him, "so we can both test ourselves for the kingdom!" If Pop Eye makes a name for himself here, he can easily etch out a comfortable life for the rest of his days.

Jackleg may learn some confidence in himself if he truly rises to the call of battle and protecting his land. But for now, it takes the promise of juicy big-assed babes to get him out of his barrel, and into the fight.

Jackleg, upon Pop Eye's playful spurning, rises to the occasion after seriously pondering a world where Bilwart has no babes to mingle with. He has a date next week, and he would be furious if these mutated freaks, or anyone, got in his way! If he doesn't get to flirt with saucy women often enough... "Jackleg" has been known to go into odd frenzies with only one remedy - a maiden's kiss. It's ugly, and his combat effectiveness and situational awareness decreases as his embarrassing lust grows.

The duo decide together that it's time to face this mutated menace, and earn their stripes for their secretly-beloved Bilwart.

Rushing down into the town square, "Pop Eye" and "Jackleg" witness the other Town Guard members cleverly smash the drawbridge onto the advancing invaders, decimating their forces outright, but initiating the no-doubt bloody face-to-face battle that would decide the fate of Bilwart itself.

Our questionably noble protagonists find themselves being barked at and directed by the venerated spiritual leader, Priest Vozz Lallwack, and they follow his orders to patch up the right side of the large, gaping gate.

In seconds, mutants of all sizes and abilities trample over their own vanquished kin, and relentlessly initiate their assault on the fort.

From the center of the massive 30-foot wide wooden drawbridge gate, all manners of twisted flesh and unspeakable abilities are being tossed at Bilwart's bravest soldiers. Many men and women step up to face the main force, veteran Town Guards who make a career out of maintaining the safety in these walls. They've planned for just this moment, but as the strategically gifted Priest Vozz Lallwack noticed, there was an emerging threat that should be addressed on the side that he sent Pop Eye and Jackleg to reinforce:

A group of Hob-goblins have pierced through the shield line of the veterans, and not only that, they have wicked explosive devices attached to their backs. A heinous, new strategy our army was completely blindsided by.

There are only 3 turns to defeat these two havoc causing misfits. They are not be super capable in combat, especially against such a large force. No doubt their plan it to sneak right by you as they did the front line so they can detonate their explosives for maximum effect, but if you can defeat them here and deal with the bombs, this may make an excellent story for Pop Eye to report to his leading officer.

The first Hob-goblin mutant suicide bomber scuttles closely by the crew, in melee range, disregarding everyone with his pure focus. His lump-in-the-throat mutant buddy lags behind him about 20 feet, in "ranged"... range.

Skunk, the extremely green and smelly lancer, and "Razzle", the silent, experienced Bilwartian mage, join you in battle at the corner of the city gate. They will act on their own...

But Pop Eye must choose his own action!!! He's an expert archer. Despite the gravity of the situation, dispatching these weakling mutants should be child's play for anyone with a Sniper's Bow.

Note: On Actions

Players will choose their action(s), and if capable, roll the appropriate dice mentioned in the post or implied by the stat values.

Majority actions are always chosen, QM (I) will roll for tiebreakers. Once chosen, QM (I) will roll a tiebreaker roll (if necessary) to see whose dice get chosen for the chosen action.

Crits and Crits fails always override normal rolls, with Crits being chosen even over Crit fails. Crit/crit fail ranges can be altered.

Players may vote without rolling, in which case QM (I) will roll any required dice for every post that advances the story that has no roll, if need be.

Remember that raw stats are affected by other means. For instance, due to Jackleg's equipment, his +4 CHA is actually a +8. He also has 6 Max MP, not 3. I may amend this in the future, but that is the system for now. Pastebin likely coming, to reduce post lengths.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to put the nails in the coffin early on this one. Got a little trigger happy and started this quest half-cocked and half-baked, without a decided combat system, among other flaws. I'm going back to the drawing board and working on something else that I am more invested in and won't flake on.

Apologies to anyone interested in this quest. Sorry it was so short.

I'll likely try to make one more quest in a few weeks, perhaps a return to Paper Mario or Civ Quest TURBO, likely the former. Then in October, Craigslist Killer Quest comes back.
