You stand looking over the edge of the Top of the World, the tallest structure in the world, where you can see nothing but a sea of white with the occasional gray building breaking through the clouds like islands. Rumor has it that should you fall from here your body could make it to where the ancient seas used to level, layer 0. From up here it sure seems possible, after all, falling from low orbit could make you fall fast enough to smash through the concrete shell of buildings the ancients built around the world. You’d die though, so you’re extra careful as you lower yourself to sit, legs dangling off as if taunting the abyss.
Letting out a sigh of relief as your body relaxes, it’s a reward well deserved for both finding and scaling this building, the ascent itself must have taken at least a month. You touch the grass that grows out of the dirt-mesh roof and listen to the rustling of the leaves in the wind while watching the pink petals of a tree floating down into the abyss. The tales of this mystical building are nothing like the reality, this is so much better.
Before this, your eyes had only laid witness to the various mosses and grasses that grow around the world and that one time you stumbled upon an ancient hydroponics farm growing potatoes. Never have you seen the colorful fruits and vegetables that seem to grow off every tree and bush here.
It’s a bit sad the Elder couldn’t be here with you now for it seemed all he talked about was his old quest to bring the endangered plants down to the World Core Replicator and breathe new life to this dying planet. But age wilted his circuits and flesh and he passed his ideals down to you, his successor.
“Should anyone find a way to the heart of the world, down in the bowels of the earth, then they may copy whatever they may desire be it weapon or ration.” You speak his dying words with the brisk wind as your only audience.
“Eeeh, the hells it you talking about, fleshbag?” Or so you thought.
