With a grunt of effort, you slide the manhole cover out of the ground, carelessly tossing aside and letting it clatter to the sidewalk. Overhead, the bright sun and clear summer sky allows a shaft of light to illuminate the sewer's depths, revealing a rusted ladder that extends downwards about ten feet. Just beneath that, a narrow walkway borders the sluggish stream of murky wastewater that represents the combined efforts of the city's populace.
Grimacing at the smell, you roll your shoulders and let out a sigh, checking the batteries in your headlamp one more time. Satisfied with your preparations, you eye the ladder's pitted steel rungs with some suspicion. Fat chance they'll hold your weight, not with all the gear you're wearing.
Ah, well. Nothing for it.
You slide into the hole boots first, allowing your legs to dangle in the dark for a few moments. A huff escapes you as you let yourself drop the rest of the way, hitting the concrete with an echoing thud.
Good thing you didn't splash into the stream. While the water is <span class="mu-i">relatively</span> clean thanks to the efforts of the native sewer slimes, it hasn't been treated by a church yet. There's no chunks, but it still needs to pass through the Aquarius plants, where a few dozen trainee Clerics get to grind their Stats by spamming Purify until the sun burns out.
That, or until they hit Level 5, whichever comes first.
You envy them.
