The Blightweed steppes is a very dangerous place to live. The region is plagued by the Blighted, a vile race of beings that nourish themselves out of the Blightweed, the plant that gives name to the steppes, it grows everywhere, but cursed be they who eat it raw, for it will give you a horrible disease and slowly turn you into a Blighted. Many animals are also susceptible to this disease.
The animal least susceptible to it is the Winglet. It is a big flightless bird, which your people domesticated for riding. Now and then one of them fall to the blight, but for the most part they can chew the Blightweed and don't turn into mindless dangerous monsters.
Your people believe in travelling light - anywhere in the steppes you can boil some water to cook the Winglets eggs to nourish yourselves, and then drink some tea with the same water you used to boil the eggs. On special occasions, you also cook some Winglets as well and make a nice feast. A variety of tea leaves grow all over the steppes, and some old women know their properties well. It is said the right combination of leaves can even be used to fall into a trance and summon otherworldly entities which bestow powers upon you if you do their bidding.
Besides the Blighted, there are other tribes around which have learned to survive in these steppes as well. A few of them are small folk as yourselves, but others are tall men who ride weird beasts.
There are ruins just about everywhere, but most of them are full of the Blighted. The few people who venture within them and return spoke of many treasures to be had, some even magical, but weirder and stronger monsters the deeper you ventured, plus a large amount of deadly traps. Some ancient civilization built them, your sages theorize they are large necropolis, underworld cities built to house their dead.
Vast herds of Winglets can be seem in the wild. Firehounds hunt them - strange four legged beasts which produce a fuel which ignites in contact with the air. Some tribes domesticate a small amound of Firehounds to extract the valuable fuel, but it is a luxury your small tribe has been unable to afford this far.
Some cleared off necropolis become holy sites for your people. In these holy sites any halfling traveller may find food, tea, rest and respite from the harsh world outside. The priestesses that attend these sites provide comfort to every traveller. But the tradition also says that when they call upon any tribe that happens to be wandering nearby they must come to their aid. They do so often, usually to get rid of roaming bands of Blighted who got too close or Firehounds who got out of hand. The Emissaries are a caste of roaming travellers from many tribes whose traditional duty is to deliver messages back and forth through the steppes. It is usually them who bring the bad news.

To the north of the vast steppes there are races of orcs, who farm hardy crops that don't die even during the harshest of winters. To the south live the Sygians, a collection of tribes of tall men who live alongside a river in large cities, they produce vast amounts of food and can sustain a large army in times of war. They mostly keep to themselves, believing all other races to be uncivilized. Seems like they just choose the tallest people as leaders, as their kings tower above all the other citizens. They believe that being taller means being more powerful and treat us with disdain and contempt for being so short.
To the west live a race of Gazers, one eyed creatures which can weaken you just by looking in your direction, and sometimes weirder powers. They are fearsome, but not very numerous. They rule the mountains where they live, and all other monsters fear them.
To the east there are vast forests which are surprisingly dangerous. An ancient race lived there that experimented with the wildlife. Little is known about them, but they left many towers and dungeons full of monsters, some kept in stasis as traps until someone foolish enough sets foot into the death trap. Sometimes a beast from these places is set loose by someone foolish enough to enter the place and start decimating the local animal population. Many such beasts occasionally find their ways to the steppes, and whether or not they survive the blightweed, they become a threat that has to be dealt with. Quite a few races dwell on those forests, but you haven't had contact with them except for tales from travellers.
If you go too far into any direction you find the Endless Sea. It is unknown whether or not there are other landmasses beyond it. Ancient stories say there are, but you never heard of anyone who has been there and returned to tell the tale, so the stories might be just speculation.

It is a festive day, the Winglet Festival, where you slaughter the oldest Winglets for food and gift baby Winglets to the children, when the Emissary came.

"Sire, the Looseslab Shrine is under threat of Blighted. A vast roaming horde has been sighted approaching their location, and the priestesses are considering fleeing to a distant shrine."

You ponder the situation for a moment. The Looseslab Shrine is halfway across your current area and the Siltmines, where you get most of your gold. You have a deal with the shrine ladies that you keep a tenth of their gold in exchange for protection. If they leave they might be safe elsewhere, but you will lose their expertise - the high priestess is an accomplished warlock who can summon unseen powers to interfere with the normal workings of nature. If you just refill the temple with your own people, you might get a better share of gold, but it might take a long time to relearn the magical secrets.

Your army is composed of ten warriors. They are very well equipped, with bronze plates, bronze swords, bronze tipped javelins. They ride the best Winglets, which also get some light bronze protection. Copper is abundant in the Green Wastes, and no tribe has the right to prevent the others from accessing it (although some try, from time to time). The Green Wastes are managed by the Green Horde, a large highly militaristic tribe which equips all their people with good weapons but is bound by the oath of providing copper to anyone who can pay for it or is willing to mine and pay them a tithe. Your only source of tin is the mysterious Shapers Guild, which you can only contact throught the Emissaries. An Emissary from your tribe told you in secret the Shapers fear the sunlight, so you assume they are vampires or some other kind of night creature. They trade exclusively in slaves, so to equip your warriors with the best bronze you had to sell away the orphans from your tribe.

You may call upon the rest of the tribe for war, but they are poorly equipped, mostly with copper tools that could make weapons in a pinch. The choice weapon for most of them in war would be socketed axes or picks, often made out of copper daggers. Very few of them have any kind of armor at all. If you are considering ranged combat, your people are good rock throwers and some people train with the sling to shoo away Firehounds and other beasts, so it might be a good skill to bring to the field of battle. You tribe has over a thousand people, so you could recruit a few hundred militia in case of dire need, but deaths amongst the militia would cause much revolt amongst the population.

The other halfling tribes in the region are the Gray Oracle Tribe, led by a powerful witch and her apprentices, the Blobhawk Clan, famous for raising Blobhawks, a strange slime that lives most of its life underground and then emmerges as a flying bird every year for awhile and lays eggs everywhere before dying and turning into a slime again, and the Seapony Tribe, they live by the river and raise Seaponies, a weird creature with twenty tentacles that lives in the water, can eat pretty much anything and survives a few days outside of water.

There are a bunch of travelling merchants who only accept metals as payment, and strongly prefer gold. They buy (for cheap) whatever weird relic we find in any dungeon, and sell the most useful ones (very expensive) to anyone with enough gold to buy. They know where all their traders are through some magical mean and if one disappears they will hire mercenaries to retrieve the goods and kill anyone involved in killing them. The merchants call themselves Golden Pawns and may have ties with the Sygians. They employ merchants of many races, including halflings. The merchants they hire definitely have ties with the Sygians, a bunch of ebony skinned tall men called only the Darks, who fight chest naked, equipped with bronze spears and round shields. The Darks will fight for anyone who pays them good gold.

Your council is formed by seven halflings, and changes whenever one of them dies or resigns. They are chosen (by you) amongst the noble families of the clan. Telling one or more councilmen to resign causes unrest amongst the nobles. Their skills are ranked as follows:

I will not update everything every turn, just the council opinions and the main stats block. I might create a pastebin for all this stuff by the end of the thread. There will be 1-3 random events per year, and you can make your choice of action. At first there will only be 1 action allowed, but as your tribe grows you may be allowed more than one choice. I just realized I forgot to add constructing or crafting stuff on the options so I will add it next turn, and I may add other things later as well.

Draft as many competent temporary slingers from the civilians as possible.
Send Kassine with 4 warriors to draw off some of the horde. Gottpakk, Graula Godak will reinforce the shire with the rest of the troops, stock piling ammo, setting up traps. Use pack tactics with our warriors picking of small groups of blighted. Slingers will act as fallback for our warriors. Graula will command the warriors. Gottpakk and Godak will be in charge of the slingers, keeping them safe but effective.

You declare a full draft of slingers and send Kassine with 4 warriors to draw off some of the horde. Meanwhile, the rest of the defense force stay on alert near your settlement, with Graula commanding the warriors, and Gottpakk and Godak in charge of the slingers.

You give Kassine orders to evacuate the shrine and see to it that the highest ranking priestesses witht he most valuable or sacred of relics are rescued back into our settlement - the rest must fend for themselves.

You suffered a minor loss in the fight against the Blighted at the shrine of looseslab. The dead broke through your formation and your slingers chickened out and fled. A few brave men stood and fought to the end, but by the time your first warrior fell to the beasts you knew you had to bail. After the beasts rampaged through the area, they kept going, as if moved by some weird instinct to find more people.
Luckily, they didn't come towards your current settlement; only a small amount of stragglers followed your warriors and they were quickly dispatched by the troops positioned nearby.
Though Kassine insisted a lot with Elaina, she couldn't convince her to come to our tribe, nor to part with her most important relics. She led her people elsewhere as we were preparing to defend the shrine. She left us a relic, however - a sacred text, written in small sheets of bronze. It details the basics of their religion in a language accessible to us, so we could start our own cult at the shrine, if we so desire.
When our men went back to check on the battlefield they couldn't find the fallen warrior, only a large amount of blighted occupying the shrine. They had no orders to kill them, so they just ignored the creatures.

Have Kasssine lead the evacuation with Summercheeks. Consult Horkas and Riwan on where we should go. Maybe move to an area with some copper or an area with wild winglets.

Personally look though the book then, have Tastina from a group to study it.

Recruit the slingers that didn't break rank into full time recruits. If they don't have Winglets have Benjamin get them some. Have Graula train them.

Tell the Enalia we need time to regroup but we will retake the shrine.

Your people pack up and you lead them to their new land. However, when you get to your destination, you find a smaller tribe, the Kikatoos, who had recently been displaced to the same area by the Blighted horde movements. After some arguing, you manage to incorporate them into your tribe.
About 200 halflings added! 2 warriors added! Summercheeks gain one level in leadership!

Sadly, your new place lacks copper reserves and significant winglet wild herds. There are also other neighbours hunting in the area, so the place is depleted of winglets. Your sages theorize by examining the blightweed that there was a big herd here, but they grazed the area to depletion. They might come back eventually.

You study the holy book. There are many concepts you do not understand in it, and you acquire no new wisdom from it.

Tastina get together a group formed mostly of women to study the sacred tomes. They seem to understand it much better than you.
You gain 5 priestess! Tastina gains one more level in magic.

A merchant from the Golden Paws arrives at the village. He has three items he is willing to sell.

"Wand of power": carved with the wood from a tree dead by a lightning bolt, it improves the magic of the wearer. (+1 to magic)

"Starmetal crown": this crown forged in starmetal is said to improve the abilities of any leader. (+1 leadership)

"Skull Staff": with many weird drawings ad carvings, found in an ancient temple, makes the blighted flee from you when you wave the staff in front of them. (+2 combat against blighted)

The merchant only accepts gold or to exchange one item for another.

"They will grow in two years. You can tame them and even ride them. But they do eat a lot of meat."
"We are worried about the depleted Blightweed in the region. The winglets must graze."
"Indeed. You can plant the blightweed, though it alread grows everywhere. But it is probably a better idea to plant something more... immediately edible."
"I see. But we lack such crops."
"Oh, then instead of burdening you with firehounds, I can gift you some Cob Berries. It is a purple berry that grows in cobs. It grows better in the south where it is warm, but we can get one or two harvests every year. The merchant that sold me them told me they can have three harvests in perfect weather. You know what? I'm gonna give you the cubs and the cobs."

The priestesses fail miserably at understand the holy book. They summon a devil by accident and it consumes the soul of one of them, without giving anything concrete in exchange for the sacrifice. The devil is let loose with the essence of the priestess, and we are forced to kill the soulless priestess body when she rises up as a blighted. We burn her corpse to ensure she won't rise again later.
A demon is let loose! Let's hope it doesn't come back to haunt us...

Upon receiving the new crop, Wings convince the farmers to plant it immediately. They have two very plentiful harvests and fill our packs with delicious cob berry, which can be eaten raw or cooked into delicious meals. Our cooks are pleased. They are mostly women.
General population morale increases by 1. Wings leadership raises by one level.

Kassine finds a ruin full of blighted nearby. It looks like it hasn't been disturbed in a long time. There are probably large amounts of treasure to be had, but the monsters inside might be too dangerous. A few skirmishes with the creatures prove it unwise to descend into the depths of their lair in this preemptive reconnaissance mission, but it serves as experience for the warriors.
One warrior improves combat by 1.

Summercheeks leads the inexperienced warriors in their training. The successive blunders he makes with his training program discourage one of the warriors, who quits our army and ride away. "I won't be fighting with these clowns.", he says, before deserting.
1 warrior lost to desertion.

Tastina studies the plants of the region but doesn't manage to make any meaningful progress. A few people get poisoned as they test the properties of some plants, and we end up having to kill a bunch of blighted that rise as a result.
Morale amongst farmers (women) reduce by 1.

Horkas tries to befriend the merchant, but he sees it as a waste of time and won't bring anything valuable to us next time he comes. In his words "You don't value the work of merchants!"
Your own merchants get saddened by this. By the time the merchant is long gone, the priestesses notice their holy book is gone! Damn thieving merchant!

As Kassine recon party returns, they see a gigantic abomination roaming the blightweed steppes. It has no eyes and seems to guide itself by smells and sounds. They try to steer it away from our tribe, but it becomes increasingly clear it will soon enough be at our doorsteps.

The monster follows our people, but it doesn't attack the blighted. Once we leave it in the ruins, it follows us back and we are forced to fight it. Before fleeing, the monster kills one of our warriors and wound a number of slingers with weird spikes it shoots out of its back we weren't previously aware of. On the way back, one of the wounded dies and turns into a weird blighted. The bones in his arms grow into sharp talons. The other infected show no signs of illness other than their wounds, but it might be too dangerous to bring them back town. Believing killing them would be too harsh, Kassine just banishes them, telling if they come back home infected we will kill them.
1 warrior dead. Several slinger militia infected banished. Warriors morale reduced by 1.

Summercheeks manages to bond with the firehounds. They now follow simple commands from him. He thinks he could breed them, but they do eat a lot.

Wings mismanage the tending of the herds and we end up eatin more than our fair share of winglets. Our resource situation degrades!
Resource reduces by 1.
Herders morale reduced by 1.

You improve upon the winglet festival adding a winglet rodeo! Spending an action working on culture now has 20% chance of improving morale.

Tastine works on improving the Cob berries. She has a dedicated plantation of cob berry set up. We now have 10% chance of improving food if we spend an action on it.
Farmers morale improve by 1.

Pindle research the local plants. He discovers a mixture of herbs that if brew for a couple weeks becomes a powerful hallucinogen. He totally didn't forget his pot filled with random herbs simmering slowly for two weeks and got high when he tasted the nice smelling concoction within. Graula and Kassine have the warriors and assorted militia train battle tactics and play some mock combat. A brawl breaks out when someone accuses the other side of cheating and the whole thing goes nowhere.

Pindle experiments with cob berry recipes and discovers that it is possible to make booze out of it! He totally did not just forgot about some cob berries rotting in a container.
Cob berry wine discovered!

Tastina travels around the area looking for natural resources. She finds some copper deposits and scattered herds of wild winglets! The men go there, mine the copper and capture the winglets.
2000 copper acquired.
500 winglets acquired.
Resources improve by one level.

Summercheeks takes the warriors looking for the demon and signs of demonic influence. The demon shows up, taunts us, possesses one warrior briefly and cause a fight.
After we restrain the possessed warrior we see a smokelike substance leave his mouth, and the demon flees away without we being able to do anything to stop it.
Boldly, Summercheeks runs after the smoke, being stopped only when it enters a nearby ruin filled wigh blighted. He then returns.
At least nobody died, but the possessed warrior reports constant nightmares.

Merge the priestesses into a support role with the warriors. They can carry extra javelins for the warriors and help keep the poison on them fresh. What spells do they know? We'll try Kassine as the lead this time and Graula, Summercheeks supporting. Scouting the ruins and picking off blighted.

Personally drink the tea with Tastina and meet the elfs. Seek advise on the demon and the ruins.

Have Wings look though the new herds could be some strong breeding Roosters.

I will adopt some of your suggestions, but please specify whose councillor you want to be in charge of a given activity.
If no councillor is in charge you can still perform the task, but often you will have a negative modifier due to common people having less than Fair skills.

Weeder gets too high with gateway tea and is unable to complete any meaningful deal with the astral elves. Worse, he promises to give them some kind of big gift next time he contacts them, but he has no idea how to do so. Tastina herself doesn't notice you being retarded with the elves and thinks it is part of your plan. They give you a weird tattoo on the forehead that you don't know what it does.

Weeder tries to trade orphans for bronze weapons but his aggressive haggling is met with derision. In the end, he ends up paying extra, just to not anger the merchants too much. Still, they are displeased. The people too, are angry that our youngsters lives are worth so little.
General population morale decrease by one.
Attitude of Seaponies decreases by one.

Pindle improves his poisons. He discovers a strong paralysing poison, which could be applied with darts. Unfortunately, it doesn't work on the blighted.
-New paralysing poison discovered!

Kassine leads the people into a mission to uproot the demon! Very little is accomplished other than mapping out the first few chambers of the ruins. When we ran into a large pack of blighted, we decided to return before we lost people. One priestess grabbed a weird torch from the wall. We discovered later that this torch never goes out and its flame doesn't burn.
Kassine showed great bravery in combat defending the priestesses from harm as we retreated! Her combat improved by one.
Cold Torch acquired!

Wings manages to find some strong roosters amongs the flock and starts breeding them! Hopefully new generations will be stronger.

Horkas has the tribe artisans craft new tools for us, as we have been running out.

The war party manages to clear through the ruins where the demon was hiding. The hordes of blighted, which seemed endless, fall step by step, room by room, corridor by corridor, to the onslaught of your men. There are losses, but what we conquered overshadows them.
Finally, upon reaching the final chamber, you find the demon possessing a tall human woman.
"So you've found me at last little ones. Kneel and worship me and I will make it worth your while!"
The priestesses instead start uttering the powerful Ancient Names, to which the demon flinches and shrieks.
"No! Stop it! You have no right to say these names! You don't understand what you are doing!"
They force the demon out of the woman and then they cut their hands and bath their palms into blood. With their bloody hands, it is like they are creating a sort of barrier that stops the flying demon smoke from exiting the room. Carefully, they force the demon within an item - a spare bronze sword from a fallen warrior. Covering the sword in blood, they surround it and chant the Ancient Names. The sword levitates a bit and glows in a faint blue light.
"It is done. We hexed this sword with the powerful demonic spirit. Only the bravest of warriors will be capable of taming this blade."
The blade is currently Level 0 (it adds zero combat levels if you wield it). You may name the blade if you wish. Some options:

Upon searching the ruin for loot, you discover a large amount of funerary jars. The priestesses explain they used to bury people with a little wealth in the form of coins, tools, weapons and jewelry, but that pilfering from the tomb will anger the local ancestor spirits.

The place is the tomb of some ancient big shot. His tomb is on the deepest chamber. His hall is filled with chests full of gold and a bunch of precious gems. He has been buried with a magical looking scepter and crown. The priestesses tell you that looting his gold and his stuff is bound to anger him.

Both the ancestors and the wizard king can be propitiated by performing rituals at their place of rest. Over time, they may even allow their goods to be taken without angering them.

Some priestesses and warriors improved at their craft.

The human woman the demon possessed does not speak our language and seems to be plagued by constant nightmares and perhaps even visions while awake. She cries oftens and sometimes screams suddenly even if nobody startles her, seemingly disturbed by unseen horrors. We should decide what to do with her.

Graula start a drive to recruit new warriors but the prospective candidates are all incompetent (none has at least 1 of combat ability). Our choice is between hiring incompetent warriors, training them next year or waiting until youth interested in warfare (there are always some) and sufficiently skilled grow up enough to be drafted as warriors.
Since it was just a minor failure, you may try to recruit again next year at no penalty.

Tastina develops a spell to counter demon magic. Based on the blood ritual the priestesses performed to contain the demon, she develops the Astral Hands ritual, which allows the one who performs it to manipulate items in the astral world, and therefore be able to interact and possibly harm demons and spirits.

Weeder takes charge of the yearly celebrations and include berry wine into them successfully. The novelty is greatly welcomed by the population!
General population morale increase by 1.

Horkas attempt to set up a Bazaar but there is not enough of an influx of caravans to justify the merchants to set up shop intensively, so the idea dies down for now. Perhaps try contacting other tribes and informing them that you will set it up?

Thirty tall dark skinned mercenaries carrying bronze weapons and mounted on large beasts with six legs and weird trunks arrive at our settlement. They identify themselves as the Darks mercenary company, and warn us that an attack of the Blighted is imminent, they sighted a massive horde coming this way. They will fight for us if we pay them enough gold, otherwise they will just go on and warn the next tribe.

Copper tools are necessary for the peasants to perform their common tasks. Running out of them degrades morale and delays any crafting/construction job. Since our resources level is low, we are losing more tools than we are producing.

I'm glad you're liking it. I'm still working out a few kinks.

For instance, sometimes people vote and because they are outvoted they don't even have a chance of having their vote be considered.

There aren't many fixes for this, I could merge votes, do a weighted roll, things like that, but right now I'm trying to keep things simple.

Another thing I'm pondering is whether the clear divide between deciding and voting is really necessary. Maybe I could have people roll with their votes, and even let the highest roll decide our course of action, giving everyone a chance.

It is a bit early for any major changes in the quest format, but those are the ones I had in mind for now.

All of you feel free to let me know what you think.

Pindle leads the priestesses to resettle our people at the shrine. We clear out a few rooms by the entrance to house our children and put some sentries, mainly towards the outside, but a couple also patrolling the inner tunnels.

We start to call rome a small maze of richly engraved tombs. We start clearing up the gore from the blighted and carefully relocating the burial jars of the dead deeper into the tomb. Once we are done with that, we hold a propitiatory ritual to the wizard king, offering berry wine and roasted winglets in his grave. We also offer cob berries to the ancestors. "They have not feasted in awhile", is our reasoning.
The offerings are accepted by the beings, who seem glad we showed proper respect. The priestesses say they were revealed in dreams the wizard king is particularly pleased that we gave him better gifts than we gave the others.
The priestesses also inform they were told that to live in the shrine we will have to pray everyday, multiple times. Spirits are attracted to the ruin and will constantly attempt to possess people, and the prayers serve to ward us against them. Of course, we could do the opposite and set up a section of the tomb as a shrine proper and let someone specially prepared be possessed for special purposes. In any case, we only know very simple prayers of protection. More powerful prayers would require further magical research.

Weeder inspects the youth for prospective warriors. He can only find a couple youth who are warrior material, and even then barely passable (combat level 1). Should we draf them?

Kassine, Summercheecks and Graula lead the warriors and a few volunteers to lure the blighted towards another tribe! Summercheeks locates a smaller tribe not too far away and manages to lure most of the horde there before expertly disappearing in the wilderness! The rest of the army then picks off the stragglers.
Summercheeks gains one combat level.

Wings, Tastina and Horkas work on breeding winglets. Though they have little success at first, Tastina has a breakthrough when she realizes that eggs outside exposed to the elements are mostly male and eggs hidden underground are mostly female.
With this knowledge, we hide as many eggs as we can underground, to create extra females and breed the herds faster.
Tastina gains one animals level.
Resources improve by one level.

The slaves Kassine been driving to build the earthworks rebel! They murder Kassine and a number of oversees with their copper tools and flee into the wilderness! We manage to recapture 27, but the damage is done.

Pindle was recruiting people to be priestesses giving them a questionaire on what they know of magic. Weeder found this method very lacking and instead went around asking people who they would think was more likely to be a witch in their group of friends. This way he got the most witch like people, without even knowing or asking a thing about magic.

Graula finds a wandering human. He is only wearing a loincloth and carrying a spear with many runes carved on it which looks magical. His body is covered in tattoos and he is very muscular. He doesn't speak our language, but doesn't seem fazed by our warriors at all. Graula decides to escort him back home. Summercheeks touches him at some point and the man beats summercheek with his spear, to the point he needs to be carried back home. Once he arrives at our tribe and finds the human female, the two of them start chatting.
He seems intent on taking her back with him to the human lands.

Wings finds a very large winglet nest inside a big natural cave. He waits for the winglets to be born and lead them all back home - they follow him because they think he is their mother. The actual mothers of the winglets are nowhere to be seem, they might have been captured by other tribes. He tells of the location of the cave to miners and they find some copper in there as well. There might be more deeper down, but they took the low hanging vein already.
Horkas finds some wild winglets and brings them home as well.

Tastina spend a long time fruitlessly trying to figure out the meaning of the runes. Pindle manages to figure out that the meaning of a few squiggly lines out of context alone, but it doesn't help much to decipher anything other than a couple panels with numbers - apparently every few years the ancients would perform a large sacrifice to the gods. The priestesses become obsessed with this and want to start performing sacrifices to the gods as well.

Weeder hosts a massive funeral, with great honors to Kassine. People cry, booze is drank, poems are read and a stone coffin with her remains is deposited within a deep chamber of the ruins. The noble houses are deeply moved and impressed by this, and Kassine's nephew, Straux Copperhill (C6) asks your permission to join the army. You, of course, grant him his wishes.
One Champion joined your army! Champions fight even better than their combat score displays.

Graula tentatively attunes to the Demon Chaser blade. The blade seems indifferent to her, just another being to kill on its path to regain its freedom.

Summercheeks go into the depths of the Blightmancer ruins. Unfortunately, he never returns. Billy gets back out with most of the warriors and the priestesses, he says Summercheeks told them he would hold the ground for them to flee. He was a true hero.
They haven't found the Blightmancer though, just fought his minions. There were many deformed blighted, and a few of them showing signs of having been experimented on. There were also some rather large ones protecting chambers and particular corridors who would not give chase to other areas.

Rolling 7d4 for ABCULMP for the new council member.

The humans stayed teaching language. The male human refused to dwell within the ruin and built within a few days a small clay hut. He then started brewing weird concoctions and giving them to the human female, who seemed to start getting better from her mental illness. The children would come to them often and they would teach them many words in the human language.

More and more people report headaches and nightmares, and a significant amount of people now report full blown visions whenever they descend into the ruins. Living into this crypt without adequate spiritual protection is harming our population greatly.

Few ways I'm thinking of keeping a considerable amount of power in our family if we die.

If we can get one of our daughters pregnant with the Wizard King. Considering the wealth in the tombs he probably owned vast amounts of land, we could find deeds and claim manifest destiny. And our grandchild would have a large amount of power in the shrine. Are bloodline plus the Wizard King's could trump the birthrights of the Finlocks.

The Finlocks didn't come with us to greet the Drughar, we accepted a bad with the Finlocks. Could just break it and sacrifice the priestesses we gain from the Finlocks to the King. They told us how many warriors they can spar as well as slingers. The first wave of immigration from the Finlocks we could take them as slaves. Finlocks would have to worry about there people and the orcs. While we focus on defense and sacrifices.

Only a single witch from the Finlocks agrees to come with us to become one of our priestesses. Their elders allow it.

Horkas lead a merchant caravan to trade with the orcs. He gifts a fair amount of berry wine and tell the orcs about the location of the human with the spear. The orcs seem interested in it. He then offers a large batch of paralyzing poisonand 300 winglets in exchange for a breeding pair of Icegroos. The orcs ponder long and hard about it, but end up agreeing to the deal. They hold a feast to celebrate, and after Horkas comes back with the new strange animals. The orcs also gift us a large amount of Gork booze. It is much stronger than our wine, so we drink in very small amounts.

You send Graula and Billy looking for slaves on the footsteps of the orcs. At some point they split. Billy finds a weird cave and decides to sleep there with his warriors. He is then attacked by a whole bunch of tiny feral creatures. We had never seen them before, they are about our size but they look more like orcs and have green skin. The fight is fierce but Billy ends up victorious. Within the cave, he finds some rope, which he uses to tie the green skins by the neck. In total, he manages to bring 21 of the creatures back to our village as slaves!

You relocate the tribe away from the shrine. Tastina stays behind leading the priestesses. Some more devout people stay behind as well. They start calling themselves "The Royal Host".

"I am having trouble retrieving certain important artifacts from special underground sites. The blighted might be numerous, and they can be made to be powerful with the right magic, but they are far from smart. I need someone tiny enough to go through the goblin tunnels, clever enough to avoid their traps, and resourceful enough to bring back to the surface the artifacts in their stores."

"Why don't you just make more relics?"

"The magic to make most of these artifacts is long lost. The artifacts themselves became unreliable as they bleed magic into the world. I want to end the curse of these stepped but to do so, I need to clear several sites and perform complex rites."

"What do you stand to gain with it?"

"Priceless knowledge of ancient magic."

"And what do we stand to gain by helping you?"

"The artifacts which are of no use to me."

"Why are you contacting us?"

"Oh, I tried contacting other tribes in the steppes, believe me. But they were... less than open minded."

"Do you have anything concrete for us to do?"

"Right now I just wanted to establish some goodwill. I am still looking for entrances to the underworld which aren't just big death traps."

"What do you mean?"

"There are large caves which are just overfilled with blighted. I'm talking about millions of them. The hordes that sometimes roam this place are the ones who manage to climb out and escape."

"How is that possible?"

"These steppes were once a lush jungle, with vast sprawling cities. Very little of it remains because the inhabittants of this jungle liked to build their homes on the top of trees with natural materials. Only their underground tombs and dungeons remain. Something they did cursed the whole region and they either perished or moved away. No one knows exactly what it was."

"And you think the secret is underground?"

"Precisely. My research points out that their most powerful magic is still buried deep within these steppes. I will contact you again when I have further information."

Pindle starts studying the tablets. He uncovers an ancient legend about twelve temples in a city called Teramus. The legend says the city was vast, was in the heart of a jungle and was powered by powerful magic. But one, the magic stopped working. The people from each of the twelve temples took out the twelve gemstones that powered the civilization and scattered around the world. The tablets don't say what happened to the city, but go into detail that there was once a race called Inukai, some kind of forest spirit, which live only partially within the confines of the material reality, and guided the people of Teramus.
Your council discuss the findings.

"I think these Inukai are the astral elves. Once the city was destroyed, they must have retreated back into the astral realm."

"It is possible that there are twelve major ruins in the steppes. I never bothered to count. Maybe the Emissaries know if there are exactly twelve or if there are more or less."

"Even if these ruins are remnants of these temples, the legend says of long lost gems of power. How are we going to find them?"

"Maybe those are the gems the blightmancer wants to retrieve from the goblins underground."

"You know, all this is starting to make an awful lot of sense."

"Don't your tablets have something more useful, like teaching how to make walls?"

"As a matter of fact... year, it teaches how to make... bricks, I think it is how it is called. With bricks you can make a tall wall."

Graula and Billy go search for goblin slaves but return empty handed. They have found some goblins, but those weren't you average goblins, some of them were flying on giant bats and threw a concoction that caught fire on impact! Billy got badly burnt by it, with most of his face and a good part of his body deformed. He barely survived, but sometimes he wonders if it wouldn't had have been better if he had died.

MadDog takes care of the wyvern egg. A small winged wizard is born. It looks sickly and its wings don't appear very healthy. Still, you hope in a few years it will be able to fly! For now, all it does is follow MadDog around and eat more than its own weight in meat everyday.

Upon being inquired, the Emissaries clarify that there are at least ten known large ruins in the steppes. Most of them are full of blighted. We gave order for the men to terrorize the locals in this region a little, just so they grow in respect and fear for the orc. We haven't actually declared war on anyone for a peace to be 'brokered'. The talks don't progress much. The orcs believe it is their right to raid whoever they want, and they don't consider raiding an act of war. Their philosophy is if you can't defend something you are not worthy of having it.

The orcs also grew annoyed at our meddling in their affairs. They expect a big gift to make up for it next time we meet for any reason.

Kenny finds some clay deposits not too far away from our settlement. We should be able to produce decent quality bricks!

A pack of firehounds attacks Kenny's expedition, but Straux defends him and slays the beasts. He discovers the skins of the adult firehounds make some very fire resistant clothing! He makes a big cloak out of them.
Fire Resistant Cloak acquired.

The nobles squabble over who gets the best land. A compromise is reached which doesn't really satisfy anyone.
Weeder gains one bargaining level!

Goblins are worthless slaves because they aren't really afraid to die and thus it is very difficult to coerce them into doing anything unless under constant duress. We manage to make them do a little bit of useful labor under the yoke of constant whippings, but even then they would just get too hurt to work properly and we needed to allow them time to heal.

The goblin we entrusted to Serra to use the mindtwister on didn't appear particularly harmed or altered by it. Either he wasn't very effected by the magic of the orb or the entities communicating through it had nothing to say to him.
Or so I thought, until we released him back amongst his kind. On a random inspection, we realized the goblins started some kind of religion. As far as our handlers could ascertain from what they learned of goblin language, the 'new religion' is based in an "eye god" which sees all and whispers truths into goblin's minds.

The wyvern seems to like MadDog and is growing and eating a lot. Pindle looks after its wings and is confident that the wyvern will be able to fly eventually. It was just born with small wings. Pindle theorizes that there must be a hierarchy amongst the wyverns, the ones with largest wings would be the most dominant. Our little wyvern just happens to not be the most dominant type, even though it is a male. This may not be a bad thing though, as it may make it easier to domesticate him enough to have it let someone fly on his back once he's big enough.

The Finlocks bring 12 warriors, their sages, women and children, and 63 goblin slaves and an addition relic.
The two relics they brought are:

Cleaving Club: when you kill a creature with it, it hits another creature of the same type that is nearby.

Statue of Dorf: the statue of an ancient hero, legend says it scares monsters away and occasionally performs miracles.

"The ruins have many secret passage which we haven't been able to fully explore. It is definitely possible that there are tunnels underground leading to other locations.

We are not aware of any 'eye god' as of now, but we will keep an eye on it.

Horkas attempt to use the icegroos on construction fails, with the creatures toppling some already constructed buildings and generally being a nuisance. Some people are killed accidentaly as well when a ceiling collapses on top of them, including several children, and a funeral is held.

Kenny looks for resources around the area and reports sighting some odd lights in the woods. Upon further inquire, he discovers a strange mammal that lives on the trees whose tail lights up at night and attract insects, which it then expertly eats with a fast shooting tongue. The animal is largely unremarkable in terms of food, but its tail can be harvested to make a torch that lasts for months. The creature regrows the tail after several months, if it can get enough nourishment in the mean time. You may name the creature.

Blangotree - this tree produces a kind of resin which is good for preserving cob berries. Cob berries covered in Blangotree resin last for several months. The wood is average quality. It takes several years to grow.

Ciclotree - this tree has a fruit that has lots of sweet liquid inside. The liquid makes you sleepy. The wood is low quality. It grows fast.

Zakamtree - this tree has the best wood, and its bark can be used to make good leather. It takes many years to grow.

Graula and Billy track the firehounds in the region with the warriors. After killing them all, they get enough materials to make 3 more fire resistant cloaks!
With the firehounds dead, the local population of winglets should increase.

Weeder contacts the emissaries telling he is looking for a small tribe in the region wanting to settle the area. They put you in contact with a group of halflings who has been displaced by the orcs recently. You gift them berry wine, 100 winglets, and lend them 5 bronze gear and as many slaves as they can handle, if they use them to plant cob berries. In exchange, you demand 40% of their crops, promising you will shelter them from the orcs if they are raided.

The emissaries show up with news! The orcs cleared a ruin further north. They looted the place, but then their troops started suffering from a horrible disease. Their shamans told them it was the ancient's curse and that they had to give back all that they pillaged to lift it. The orcs are now scramblings all over the region recovering the gold and relics they scattered around to give back to the ruin.

Weeder hosts the festival personally this year. While most of the population seem to enjoy it as per usual, the craftsmen and the warriors approach Weeder in turn to complain about the circumstances of their work.
"We have barely any tools left and little material with which to maky anymore. We need tools sire."
"The militia is ill equipped. Sure, you can give any bloke a length of leather string and a bunch of pebbles and call him a slinger, but that ain't gonna help much without regular training and without a side arm to defend themselves in a pinch. Right now we have neither."
Weeder promises them both to look into their issues.
Warriors morale increase by 1!
Craftsmen morale increase by 1!

Bill and Graula clear out the caves, within they found a species of giant bat. Graula underestimated the creatures and walked ahead of the group leading the warriors, and got swarmed by them. She ended up losing an eye, but learned a lesson in leadership when, despite her loss, she kept directing the advance from behind the lines.
Graula lost one eye!
Graula gained one level in leadership!

Within the cleared caves, Kenny makes a pen for the icegroos. They start breeding there and they have a bunch of young. Seems like a cool cave is already cool enough for them. The litte icegroolings drink a secretion that drips from the mother's shell, and after a few months develop their first shell, which they shed every other month as they grow. After shedding shells three times the growth slows down. Their shells are very durable but highly flammable - fire merely has to lick it for the whole thing to be consumed in a flash.

Horkas become convinced that the eye god of the goblins is the one true god! He starts interpreting everything under this new light and becomes a firm believer in the god of the slaves. Nothing we can do can break his faith. He prays to the eye god three times every day, when he wakes up, when the sun is high in the sky and before going to sleep. He is often found discussing the 'underground sun' with Serra. Nobody has any idea of what it is except the two of them, and they seem unable to explain it well.
"I just know there is a place the sun hides underground when it is night. The place where the eye god lives. The sun is his son, he comes to collect our prayers and our thoughts and take them to the eye god. It is all here in these tablets, look..."

Horkas became a Fanatic!

Pindle discovers crude drawings and descriptions of a blowgun and decides to tinker around with wood and leaves until he manages to make some. The drawings seem to imply there is a crop that is naturally hollow through which you can shoot a dart. Since we have no access to such crop, we have to hollow out a thin tube of wood. After experimenting and failing a lot, he arrives at a working model. The range isn't particularly good, but it could be perfected.

An orcish exploration team arrives at our settlement. They demand an audience.

Kenny lead the herders our to round up extra winglets into our herds. They think some neighbouring clan might have done the same recently, for we don't find as many winglets as we would have liked and barely recoup the amount we gave the orcs.

"The orcs visited the shrine, but have not harassed us. I think they figured it is bad luck trying to plunder the 'cursed' shrines of the steppes.

Weeder I have been researching more about this ancient civilization with the tablets you gave us. They don't seem to have been too much more advanced than us technologically, but they used very powerful magic, and the key to their magic was binding elemental spirits into special gems that they would house into their shrines. Under the power of the shrine, the vegetation would grow lush, huge jungles full of all manners of edible fruits could sustain a very large population of humans and animals alike. If we could find at least one such gem we could try to reactivate a shrine and reestablish this magic of plenty."

"And do you know where one of these gems could be?"

"There are clues pointing out that blightmancers have been seeking these gems for generations, and also trying to rediscover the magic to recreating them. They have been unsuccessful largely because the world has lost most of its magic already. One of the tablets says that a being called the Devourer of worlds is battling a being that is only mentioned as the Eye God which witness all creation. Everything the Eye God sets its gaze upon becomes magical, and while he was looking upon our world the magic was plentiful. But the Devourer managed to put a veil between the Eye and our world, and as such magical gems are necessary to allow the Eye god to see through the veil and put magic into the world."

"Do you believe this stuff?"

"We do need more information. I'm considering contacting the astral elves for help with this research, but I don't know what kind of gift to give to them."

The Tulovs are harried out of their recently built homes and don't have time to carry with them much of anything. The ones who fled mounting on winglets had the best luck, but you decided not to pursue so even those who couldn't find a winglet to ride away managed to flee as well.

Kenny tries to use the icegroos to help with farming, but to no avail. One of the farmers accidentaly sets an icegroo on fire, destroying its shell and burning the creature. It goes around in a rampage destroying everything in its path. It does some property damage and some halflings are killed. It proves impossible to calm down the shellless icegroo so we have to put it to death. Many women can be seen mourning their dead children.

You stall for time, saying the council must deliberte. Your people barely have enough time to mount on their winglets, grab whatever possesions are dear to them, and depart in a hurry.

However, only about a third of the people were lucky enough to have winglets ready to go. The rest either had no winglets, or the winglets available weren't big enough to carry them yet.

Graula, Billy and MadDog passed around distributing slings to the men who couldn't flee and drafting them into the army.

Then you lead the rest of the non combatants on foot and entrust the fight to your council members.

The orcish negotiator grows impatient and then notices you evacuating your people.

"Hah! I knew you were cowards! Look, the head of one of your blasphemers!", he says, tossing a halfling skull, presumably from Horkas.

Your army fights fiercely, but is quickly overwhelmed by the orcs. The slingers break ranks and flee at the first sign the orcs are reaching them, and then the remaining warriors follow suit.

After breaking your ranks, the orcs pillage what you left behind and send assassins after your leaders!

You lose the MindTwister which was always with Serra. You lose the Cleaving Club which was always with Straux. You lose the Statue of Dorf because none remembered to pick it up. You lose all but one Fire Resistant Cloaks because those wearing them disappeared in combat.

You arrive at an area close to where Summercheeks disappeared years ago invading the ruins of the blightmancer.

You think of contacting him, but you lost the Mindtwister, and just strolling through a blighted infested ruin sounds like a recipe for disaster.

After such large defeat, everyone's morale is low.
General morale decreases by one.

But much worse happens! Our beloved leader! Weeder the Great! In the midst of one of his rousing speeches, he has a heart attack and dies! Oh no! None can ever replace him, but who will substitute him?

This look like a great place to retire, Weeder was the only roll we could count on. Straux is higher combat than 6 because he is a champion.

It took us a large amount of turns getting a shire cleared. Then losing the revenue it would generate. One of the worst things to happen to the tribe. And it was off a success roll.

Wings. Relocate Tribe. 11 vs 8. Success.

You relocate the tribe away from the shrine. Tastina stays behind leading the priestesses. Some more devout people stay behind as well. They start calling themselves "The Royal Host".

Halflings are just super hard mode. Other races don't see them as a threat for good reason, just loot sacks. Great quest QM.

Hmm... I might have been a little too heavy handed with the orcs. Though there has been some build up in the tensions and plenty of warning.
I suppose we could end the quest here.

My plans were for you to uncover at least one of the ancient shrines and recover its powerful magic, but I suppose the split with the priestesses did hamper your ability to do that.

I also gave you a rather hard mode scenario, in the middle of a cursed land surrounded mostly by other halflings and with powerful neighbours outside your native biome.

If you guys agree we can wrap it up here and start a new one.

I knew the orcs would probably come they had 5x our army when they made base camp that was our best chance. The Finlocks thought is was a good idea not to hit there beachhead. And talk us out of it. We doubled our tripled the army after that and the orcs 20x our army. I do think we deserved the attack.

The deal with the Finlocks a huge mistake they didn't have firehounds and banned halfling slaves our only successful income. They couldn't feed themselves even though every Halfling adult is a skilled farmer. They where probably on the orcs side.

The finlocks probably got rid of the firehounds because we didn't have enough meat and thought it would be better for the dragon. We kinda deserve the attack we practically did the same thing to the other tribe.
