>>5597487>>5597503>>5597510>>5597550>>5597624Your husband, Danny, the soon-to-be father of your newborn child sits calmly beside your bed, holding your hand, occasionally mopping up the sweat that appears on your forehead with a blue, frilly handkerchief you sewed for him when you were dating (an abomination from your early days, you've since gotten much better but he refuses to dispose of it).
"It's not long now," he says. "Hang in there."
"Don't leave, OK? I don't care what they tell you, I want you to stay."
"I'm not going anywhere."
"They might make you leave but you can't leave, OK?" Wait, did you say that already? The stuff they put you on is making you kind of light-headed, like when you haven't eaten for a while. Is that supposed to happen?
"They can't make me leave, honey."
"What if they do?"
"I'll remind them I'm armed." That's your husband, ever the macho detective. Never mind that he's never actually fired the gun at anyone. He's more the big brain, poke at things with a silver pen, Sherlock Holmes type, but exchange the deerstalker and cape for a baseball cap and a windbreaker. He's the zen to your zany. Nothing ever seems to phase him, but he can get scary in that cold calmness. Like right now, when you suddenly start screaming because the pain came back for some reason. He just looks up at the doctor and asks why you're in pain, and the doctor starts stumbling over her words.
"Maybe the dosage..." She nods to one of the nurses, who you assume upped the dosage, but the pain keeps building and building. There's noise all around you now, you can't even scream any more it hurts so much, you can't think, everything starts to go dark.
"Don't... leave..."
You feel the reassuring pressure of your husbands hands on your arm. "I'm not going anywhere." Then darkness.
When you wake up again you can't feel him but that's only because he's holding your newborn son. Seeing you're awake, he gets up and puts the baby in your arms. You promised yourself you wouldn't fall into cliche but you can't help it: he's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen.
It wouldn't be long after that that your life would forever change--but not because of the baby.
