My wish is only
to recover your heart.
You are Gaius, a Water Mage from the Magical Kingom of Zeal and you are very far from home. You and Princess Schala, along with your new friends Chrono, Marle and Lucca, have spent a day in Arris Dome, the last refuge of mankind in this dark, destroyed future you all have found yourselves in. In your time here, you helped people, learned much, and acquired new weapons for yourself and the Princess, your love.
You were finally on the way to the purpose of your visit here, to see for yourself a video ostensibly showing Lavos, your God of Magic, bringing ruin to the world. Lucca, the genius engineer, was leading you and your love underground while Chrono and Marle had gone ahead to clear the way. Despite this, four giant mutant rats blocked your way, and the woman that you loved, Lavos bless her pure heart, had expressed misgivings about ending their lives. You didn't share her aversion, and while you were sure she wouldn't stop you if you decided to ignore her hesitant objection, charge ahead and slaughter these rats by yourself, it would be worth it to try and convince her. It would always be worth it to convince her of such things, a small part of you whispered, and it would never be hard at all.
Ignoring the small, red pairs of eyes in the darkness ahead, you turned around - was that a fifth pair of red eyes that you saw out of the corner of your eye as you did? - and looked her in the eyes as you spoke. "We have killed living beings before, my love." you gently reminded her. "The sea serpents in the underwater passage and that large caterpillar that was attacking Chrono, Marle and Lucca when we first met them." She had not objected then and you felt that it would be important to get to the reason for that.
She shrunk from your sight, averted her gaze and nervously bit her lip. "That... that was different. We were being chased by those robots and the serpents attacked y... they attacked us. You got hurt because of me... because I..." she swallowed anxiously.
You closed the distance to her and took her palms in yours. "I would have done that a hundred times over. I meant what I said back then. We did better in our second battle, didn't we?"
Her wonderful emerald green eyes returned to yours. She blinked slowly and nodded. "We did. But that was different. We fought these monsters in self-defence, in order to stop them from hurting y... us, or others. We didn't... we didn't invade their home for our own selfish desires. Life is precious. Even an animal's life has value. We should not be so quick to take it."
