You are a nameless level 1 Leadae, an F-rank demon. It should come as no surprise that you're at the absolute bottom of the hierarchy, with even some mindless beasts being seen as superior to you. Luckily that can change, if you manage to reach level 3 without dying you can evolve into a slightly stronger demon and as weak as you are it won't take much to level up. As usual you're scrounging around for any discarded scraps of food when you feel a strange tingle. You instinctively know someone just performed a low level summoning. You can answer it, and probably have to do some menial task for a small reward or even just experience or you can resist it and keep looking for something to eat, which could be more risky if you run into a more powerful demon. You don't bother resisting the summon, after all whatever task you get is probably better than staying where you are. There is a bright flash and you find yourself in a witch's cabin, surrounded by a standard magic circle. You can tell the witch looks kind of disappointed by you but then seems to resign herself.
<span class="mu-r">"You'll have to do, watch closely." </span> She takes out a weird glowing mushroom and holds so that you can easily see it. <span class="mu-r">"I want you go out and collect more mushrooms like this one, in exchange I'll give you this once you're done. </span> She puts the mushroom and points towards some apple cores and a moldy piece of bread, which is sadly a better meal then you've had in days. You can't leave the magi circle without accepting but if you refuse you'll simply go back to hell.

As long as you're in the mortal realm you technically can't die either as you'd just get sent back to hell, though going back by being beaten instead of being sent back does carry some nasty consequences.
<span class="mu-r">"D..deal" </span>
It takes you some effort to talk in her language even though you understand it as your jaw isn't formed right for it but the moment you accept the magic circle around you stops glowing and the compulsion to look for mushrooms takes hold in your head as a result of the verbal contract.
<span class="mu-r">"Don't keep me waiting!" </span> The witch shouts as you leave her cabin and enter the forest. Luckily for you this isn't part of the contract so you can still take your time if you want.

You decide to risk fighting, since if you succeed you will get both meat and experience. You have no experience tracking though so it's just gonna depend on your luck. As you slowly make your way through the woods looking for both signs of animals and the mushrooms you luck out. You spot some fresh red blood on a small patch of grass, not enough to lick off but it's something.
Carefully looking around you spot a trail of blood drops and follow it. Before long you find a wounded jackalope, with no sign of the hunter nearby. Not knowing that injured animals are often more aggressive you slowly walk up towards your prey. The jackalope tries to get away but the arrows make it hard for it to run and thanks to a quick charge you manage to grab one of the arrows which clearly sends a shock of pain through the creature.
Holding the rabbitlike creature down so that it can't move it's head you pull the arrow out and use the tip to awkwardly cut it's throat, resulting in a few nasty bites to your fingers and completely ruining any value the pelt might have had. Not that you care, the still warm meat alone is more then enough to make it up for it and you think you even got enough experience to bring you a third of the way to level 2.

It doesn't take you much longer to find several glowing blue and purple mushrooms like the witch showed, including one particularly large one with two small fairies floating around it. It doesn't take a genius to tell that that mushroom must be pretty powerful, but you're more interested in the fairies. While eating them won't fill your stomach they are practically semi-living magic energy not that you know, that you just feel a need to devour at least one of them.
You slowly creep up to the fairies and manage to grab them both, the second you pull them away from the mushroom you can see them start to fade away but you manage to cram them down your throat before they fully disappear. You briefly feel a strange energy flow through your body but afterwards nothing about you seems to have changed.
Somewhat confused that you didn't at least seem to get any experience from that you harvest as much of the mushrooms as you can carry, including the big one, and make your way back to the witch's cottage.
The second you enter you can tell from the look on her face that she is unhappy with how long you took but her expression changes when she sees what you brought her.
<span class="mu-r">"What took you so lon....?"</span> She pulls the big mushroom out of your hands and examines it. <span class="mu-r">"I'm impressed and don't let it be said that Marsden Runes doesn't reward good work."</span>
She ruffles through a drawer before pulling out a small simple knife and hands it to you along with the promised apple cores and moldy bread. <span class="mu-r">"Here you have earned it and fulfilled the contract."</span>
Before you can say anything in response you see the same bright flash as before and find yourself back in hell, still holding your spoils.

You take a few practice swings with your your new knife and move your finger along the edge. Even you can tell it's not a great weapon but it's far better than what you expect other Leadae to have, and you decide to use it.
It doesn't take you too long to find some suitable target as your kind can be practically found anywhere that is not the territory of some stronger demon. In fact you manage to find two Leadae either fighting or ...doing something entirely different, it can be hard to tell sometime. But either way they're not paying attention to you and successfully sneak up to them.
You try to quickly slit the throat of one of them, but your cut is too shallow and while its clear they're bleeding out your victim is still alive and more then willing to team up with their opponent/partner to take you down.
Despite them having the number advantage you can tell from their movements they have gone a while without food and aren't used to working together. Their first hit results in a painful but not very effective slap to your face and the injured Leadae accidentally ramming the other one in an attempt to bite you, turning the fight into a threeway free for all.
On of them wraps their tail around your throat and the other headbutts them, you using the opportunity to cut part of the tail off with your knife. As you do so a finger is pressing into your eye socket. Luckily with all that effort the Leadae whose throat you cut is bleeding out much faster then they would otherwise and becomes too weak to move. Seeing no chance to win the one lacking a tail scurries of. You wonder if you should chase them, you're sure after all you will get the experience for the dying Leadae, but not if you can catch up to the one running.
Either way if you try there is no doubt the corpse will be gone depriving you of a food source.

You practically have to force yourself to swallow but the moment you do you feel weird, kind of like when you ate felt that energy after swallowing the fairies. Unlike yesterday though you feel a brief burst of physical strength along with an intense bloodlust, but neither sensation lasted very long nor did it happen again when you forced down a second bite.
Unfortunately the smell of the flesh caught the attention of a Kuurg, a mindless demon-beast that is sadly too strong for you to beat. The way you see it you can either

Deciding to do the sensible thing you run however you are not fully willing to give up your prize, as disgusting as it is. So you take a few seconds to grab the cut off tail dragging it with you. An use of time you almost regret as in those few seconds the Kuurg get a lot closer. Luckily you manage to create some distance as it goes for the corpse and begins tearing of flesh off. Still you have no doubt that you're next on the menu so you keep running until the Kuurg is out of sight. Making sure the tail doesn't drag across the ground you sharply change direction after catching your breath.
It's at this point that you see that while you were focusing on escaping the Kuurg the tailles Leadae seemingly made a deal with a more powerful demon as they are both after you. Thinking quickly you run back in the direction you came from, hoping you can use your enemies against each other.

You can see the Kuurg and do your best to keep it out of the sight of your other pursuers while still pretending to run away from them. Due to both the distance and the fact that the area is covered in rocks that also obstruct sight you manage to keep the hellhound hidden for quite some time, eventually your pursuers do spot it though.
<span class="mu-r">"Look there!"</span>
It's actually a relief when you realize its been seen as now you can more easily look for a way out.
First you try a sharp turn to the right but it turns out the distance between the other demons is large enough that they can adjust their paths without running into each other. On the plusside the louder growling tells you that the Kuurg doesn't see the newcomers as allies but as enemies after the same prey.
You spot a particularly large rock in the distance and quickly come up with an idea. Waving the Leadae's tail around so that your by now uncomfortably close pursuers focus their attention on it you run towards the rock, pretending you're too distracted by what is going on behind to pay attention to where you are going.
After you fake trip and use the large rock to help you up you catch your breath for a few seconds. As you thought the Kuurg is ahead of the Leadae and the other demon but the distance isn't too large. You let out a sigh of relief that those two haven't given up the chase and start spinning the tail around before throwing it at them.
The motion catches the Kuurg's eye and it chases the tail. While you hope it will also attack the two you do your best to climb the rock, using your knife for extra grip where necessary. By the time you make it to the top you can see that Kuurg easily defeated the tailles Leadae but seems to be struggling with the slime demon.
After some struggle the slime demon pushes the hellhound's head in its body and keeps it there until the beast suffocates it then looks toward you.
<span class="mu-r">"Eh, not worth the effort."</span>
Instead of going after you it turns around and starts forcing both bodies into itself.

You move to the other side of your rock and climb the nine feet back down. As soon as you're back on the ground you start running again but pay a bit more time to your surrounding this time, not wanting to get caught of guard again. To your surprise though you don't see any demons at all, the reason for that quickly becomes clear as you find a road leading to a massive structure. You must be in the territory of something powerful.
You hide a good distance away from the road as you see two no doubt higher rank demons walk towards the structure and can just barely make out what they are saying.

You pretend to be scared off and scramble away from the building, your curiosity is too strong though. After all that taunting why did the guard simply throw you and why don't they even seem to try to follow you? You're sure you can find the answers by getting inside but you have no doubt the main entrance isn't an option.
Once you're a good distance away you change direction again and head back towards the building, making sure that you don't arrive anywhere within sight of the entrance. Luckily you don't spot any other roads or demons..
After a while you are back at the wall and start circling around it looking any hole or opening that'll allow you in. Surprisingly enough it doesn't take you long to find a missing stone block, easily big enough that you could just walk in without even having to duck.
Just as you concluded that this oversight had be due to both arrogance and laziness you spot something on the ground. It looks like a small part of the summoning circle the witch had used, you have no idea how one of those circles could be in hell, but you believe that it does explain a few things. No doubt passing the line means implicitly agreeing to follow certain rules, but that does raise the following questions. Does entering this way mean submitting to the same rules and their protection? Do the guard have any reason to be there except to keep "undesirables" out? And is this entrance really as unknown and accidental as you originally thought or is it a trap of some kind?

A small flying ball with a large mouth and very sharp teeth. You also notice that unlike the cell you fell into this one has the bars not only much closer together but comes with a top as well, no doubt to keep the demon inside from just floating away. While stil holding you in one hand your captor opens the cage with the claw you attacked earlier that now disappointingly looks completely uninjured.
The weird ball like creature instantly tries to bite it but the demon simply shoves you in front of it. You are barely able to pull your tail back before you lose it and are dropped to the ground landing on your feet. The warden says nothing as he backs up a bit, but you understand what he wants. You do your best to ignore all the other demon screaming and cheering and only focus on the weird floating ball.
Not wanting to anywhere that mout you try to get behind it so you can stab it but you're not used to floating opponents or ones much smaller than you. As a result you're caught off-guard when it charges straight towards the part of your spine that connects your upper and lower halves. On the other hand it doesn't seem familiar with weapons as it barely pays any attention to the knife in your hand.
As a result you manage to drive your blade into it before either of you can learn if its teeth are stronger than your bones. The ball falls to the ground and you're barely capable of pulling your knife out before a tail wraps itself around the dead body and drags it towards one of the many cages, no doubt so the owner of the tail can eat the corpse.
The red armored demon laughs again as he picks you up and this time you don't resist as he put you in an empty cage slams it shut.
<span class="mu-r">"Win three times and you'll get kicked back out to the wastes lose and ..well, I'm sure you can figure it out."</span>
Despite your circumstances you take some solace in the confidence that you should evolve after at most three more fights anyway.

You are not exactly sure how you sit in that cage but eventually the armored demon comes back. He picks up your cage like it's nothing and carries you out the door. As you're being carried you briefly wonder if you should try to stab him again but when you remember how quickly he healed you decide against it.
<span class="mu-r">"Tough luck new guy, your first fight is a difficult one just try to make your death somewhat entertaining and don't bleed too much."</span>
He says nothing else until you reach what looks like small arena, with a few bored looking demons in the mostly empty stands. He opens the cage and takes you out while holding you by the neck.
<span class="mu-r">"Don't even think about running."</span>
You brace yourselves for another throw but the demon notices and kicks you in instead. As you land on the sand floor you notice some other demon on the other side of the arena carrying a similar cell as the one you were. This demon seems a bit more nervous about opening it though as he makes to stand behind it. The moment it opens five orange hairballs come crawling out with mouths even bigger than the ball had, you briefly wonder if there is some relation between them before you realize you should focus on your fight.

The weird creatures are strangely fast for something without legs and they cross the small arena in no time. What is more they are clearly used to working as two of them attack you at the same time, both going for your legs. You react too slow to block either attack and get a nasty bite taken out of either leg, neither wound is permanently crippling but the pain is still enough that your legs give out underneath you and you fall down.
Despite your fear of being swarmed, and the audience clearly expecting the same thing, the animals back off and scatter. As you try to figure out why, one of the more bolder creatures slowly approaches you, clearly checking if you're dead. Not wanting to be bitten again you grab it from behind with one hand, successfully keeping it from opening it's mouth as you stab it to death.
This seems to dive the nearest creature into a frenzy but to your surprise it goes after your kill. As if it too hasn't eaten in days it tears into it's companion, seemingly having forgotten all about you. Using the opportunity you stab it to death as well ignoring the booing .
As you get up you see how cowardly these animals are as the remaining three all run away seemingly more interested in surviving than working together. You take a few uneasy steps, testing out your legs, and while each step hurts you're confident you can still walk and have a good chance of killing them all one by one,

You notice that the creatures are all watching you and become less cowardly when they realize you are hurt, one of them making squeaky sounds that convince the others to join up with it. By the time you are close enough to attack the three of them have grouped up again, but they are still more cautious even with their backs to the wall.
Not wanting to let them take the initiative again, you decide to take the apparent leader out first. Knife in hand you thrust your arm forwards, not thinking about the fact that your target is flanked by it's two allies. Before your knife makes contact you set of sharp teeth sink into your skinny arm, making you drop your weapon in shock to some minor cheers from the audience.
You instinctively pull your arm back and luckily for you these animals are light enough that you drag them along with it. The instant they leave the ground they let go while the remaining furball uses the distraction to latch onto your hoof like foot. You successfully kick it off but it takes a good chunk of flesh with it and you fall over in pain. At least you are also able to grab your knife again and by swinging it around wildly convince your opponents to stay away for the moment while the audience boos again and even louder then before, making it clear who they want to win.

The monsters quickly notice you're not actually trying to attack them, but while they approach you they still stay outside of your reach which makes you hope you can keep this up until everyone gets bored enough to just end the match. Unfortunately you're so distracted by the pain and the effort to keep swinging your knife that you don't notice there is only two of the creatures in front of you, at least not until you feel a sharp pain in your tail and the audience starts cheering again.
As you make the mistake to look behind you as you kick your attacker in the head hard enough to scare it into letting go, losing the tip of your tail in the process, the braver of the remaining two uses the opportunity presented. it dashes in under your knife and bites into your arm. Luckily though this also prevents the attack from the third one succeeding.
You refocus your attention to what is in front, turning your head around. To your surprise the remaining monster had leaped into the air seeming wanting to get on your back. Instead all it manages to do is impale itself on one of your horns. It doesn't die immediately but from the sounds it makes it's clearly fatally injured.
The final two animals upon hearing the pained yelps actually back off and regroup, giving you time to reposition yourself so that you can watch them both. The weight of the dead creature makes it hard to properly move your head but you don't dare to take the time to remove it, besides if you can keep it for yourself you at least have some food if you win.

Of course the downside is that as long as they're alive you won't win this match. None of your wounds are fatal but having to be constantly on guard and tuning out the occasional "boo's" is pretty tiring.
It seems that you're not the only one tired of all this, one of the hairballs keeps getting closer, only to back of again when you get ready to swing your knife. After the third time you get an idea, you wait until it has gathered its courage again and keep your knife arm perfectly still. When it is close enough you grab it from behind with your other hand, keeping your fingers away from its mouth. Lifting it up in the air you stab it in the bottom, killing it.
As you drop your kill the final animal clearly panics, backing up until it can't go any farther due to the wall. It also makes the soon to be fatal mistake of turning its back to you. Not wanting to miss this opportunity you drag yourself towards it and stab it the instant it's within your reach. The second it stops moving all the tension leaves your body and you pass out.
When you wake up you're back in your cage and are surprised to see that your injuries are crudely bandaged and that they left the corpse impaled on your horn. You spend a few minutes focused on feeling on how the energy flows through and try to will where you want it to go. Suddenly you think you got it and as you open your eyes your hands seem to have a very faint glow which quickly dies out to your surprise. Not sure what you can do with it but emboldened by succes you decide to try again but the energy is much weaker and you can barely even feel it.
No matter how you try you can't even affect the way it flows this time and give up when your stomach growls. While you're used to hunger you remember you have acces to food this time and using your knife skin your prey. This is the first time you've done anything like it but you think you did pretty well. Sure there are still some patches of hair left on the meat and the fur didn't come of one piece but you're sure your knife handling has improved.
Looking at the fur you think it might for some decent bedding, at least it should be better than the stone floor and dig into your meal. It tastes leagues better than the demonflesh did but it is still a bit gamey.
By the time you're done eating you can feel the energy flow as strong as before but before you can do anything the armored demon walks back up to your cell. As you run around you get an idea, you could try and flip the millipede over or try to wedge your knife in between it's armor but why would you? It has two glaring weak points on it's face and since it headbutted you probably no way to bite.
Having a strategy in mind you stop running and turn around crouching down so you can easier the arthropod's "eyes". When the audience sees you've stopped running there are some cheers which turn to sounds of confusion as you simply wait for the millipede to charge at you.
You don't have to wait long and using all of your strength combined with it's momentum you stab the millipede in its eye. Your knife goes in all to the handle and while you're reasonably sure the fight is over you don't immediately pull it but twist it around as much as you can. Unfortunately this does mean some of the toxin it's body is covered in drips onto your hands but you ignore the burning.

Focus mana in the hand then the knife, and try to remote-slash it as our knife is slash more than stab; this combine our mana and knife skills.
Forgot to write that training in the jail.

>>5780115 >Just watch for now and focus on dodging if it attacks Doubt we're fast enough to catch it, and climbing the pole will just keep us from dodging.

What would you like as a fanart?

Having climbed a rock before you quickly reject the idea of using the walls/poles since climbing would leave you open. Instead you come up with another idea to use both them and the transparent rock. Your opponent takes flight and you pretend you're terrified of it and hug the wall. From what you can tell it's is neither a very agile flyer, as there are some near misses with the constructions lingering the arena.
When the other demon stops about 3 meters away from and just hover in the air you worry it might have some kind of ranged attack but it seems it was either playing with you or adjusting itself in some way as it comes dashing towards you.
You resist the urge to jump away immediately and force yourself you wait. After your opponent has crossed about two thirds of the distance, you leap to the distance. Your plan seems to have worked perfectly, he crashes into the stone and while he isn't knocked out he is certainly dazed.

Remembering what your warden(?) told you you decide to prevent the winged demon from taking flight by getting onto his back and charge towards him. In his dazed state he realizes your plan too late and he only just his wings spread when you get on top of him. As he flails around you even find out he can't reach you.
Taking your change you cut him several times with your knife, trying to either hit an artery or damage his spine. While you don't succeed on inflicting fatal or paralyzing wounds you opponent lets out a howl of pain and his flesh does swell a bit around the cuts, due to some left over millipede toxin. This time the audience actually cheers at your success.
Unused to being cheered you let the audience distract you and notice too late that the winged demon is no longer dazed. He tries to shake you off but you just barely manage to hold on, even as you're swung into the stone wall.

Part of you wants to save your mana for later but you're not sure if you will get another chance as good as this one. You gather all your magical energy into into your hand and just as you're about to be smacked into a pole deliver a Mana punch to the winged demon's spine. While this does hurt your fist your opponent is clearly worse off.
The winged demon has stopped moving and just falls forward, landing motionlessly on the sand floor. As you get up you briefly think he is already dead until you see his eyes. You flip his body around and accompanied by a cheering audience brandish your knife. Ignoring his attempts to bite you in a desperate attempt to get at least some damage in you slit the winged demon's throat and stare into his eyes as the life leaves him.
The instant your final arena match ends you can feel yourself level up and you triumphantly raise your fists in the air.
