Nexus Spaceport, Garriga Sector 8,070,174,044,183,120 Universal Standard Time 2557 October 17 04:53 Earth Standard Time “Samuel John Hawke, human, age 37, born 2520 according to the Terran Alliance calendar at Utopia Basin, Mars, master of vessel license code ending in X13047,” the android with multifaceted eyes says as it reads information off its workstation. “Is that correct?” “Yeah,” you utter with a sigh. After waiting to renew your license for almost nine hours you vowed to never delay until the last minute again. You hadn’t planned on renewing it at the busiest spaceport in known space, of course, but a final inspection on your new ship turned up a faulty jump sequence initiator so here you are. The dealer is fixing the problem but it has put you a few days behind schedule. The good news is you were able to use that time to hire a crew, save for your first mate. That’s your next order of business after this robot is done doing whatever the frak it’s doing. You’ll have to get through the list of candidates quickly. Your client is expecting you to start the job tomorrow and you don’t want to fall behind on your first job with an actual crew in a real ship, not just your old shuttle. The android's iridescent digits glide over a holographic panel as it processes your renewal. “This will just take a few moments.” You ignore the tin can and glance around the large waiting room for what must be the thousandth time today. There must be over two thousand beings here of every species you’ve ever seen before and a few you haven’t. And just what the hell is that thing in the front row doing? Nursing its young? Mating? Eating? All of the above? There were truly some disgusting creatures in the galaxy. That’s why you worked alone for a while. That and you couldn’t afford a crew let alone a bigger ship that requires one. But now you do have a bigger ship and a crew and thankfully your little company is still well under the employee limit to have to deal with hiring quotas. So whatever that thing is is not getting aboard your ship and doing whatever it’s doing. The android interrupts your thoughts. “You indicated on your renewal that you recently acquired a new spacecraft. Bureau records do not yet show the vessel’s information. Before I can finalize your request I must know the make and model of your ship and its identification sequence.”

You're the captain of a spaceship and you have to find jobs so you can pay your crew, keep financing your ship, and hopefully upgrade it in the future. If you're lucky maybe you can get a bigger ship or start a small enterprise with multiple ships. I was delayed a couple weeks but I’m finally getting it off the ground. Expect updates to typically occur Tuesday-Friday. This is my first quest so I’m going to fuck up. Note: Expenses listed above are approximate and do not include things like docking fees, maintenance, etc. If you hire different crew members or add/cut positions that will also impact it.

Surprisingly you’re the only one in this car. First time for everything. You pull up the purchase contract on your comtab and start reviewing it with a focused scowl. As you comb through the document, you find nothing out of the ordinary, no hidden clauses, all recalls addressed—twelve of them related to the jump drive and its computing subsystems—but no mention of replacing the computer or jump drive. That Yttraxian might be a small-time dealer especially for this sector let alone this station, but he did come highly recommended by other captains you have come to trust. You grunt disapprovingly. As the train quickly brakes at its next stop you disembark and stride into the commercial sector of the starport then into the first bar on right. Henkers is the bar of choice for out of work spacers which makes it the bar of choice for captains who need to hire them. You’ve been here plenty of times before looking for work and once two days ago when you hired the rest of your crew but none of the spacers with any experience stood out as first mate material. After an hour of talking with other captains and spacers, and pay for a lot of drinks, you settle on and interview a half dozen candidates then narrow it down to three choices. The Rhyzari is quite amicable and jovial though he doesn’t come across as particularly bright. He knows hauling and seems like he might manage the crew well. He only wants half what you were willing pay—less than what you are paying your deck officers—though he does claim to be “worth it” due to his “connections.” He might pay off quickly if those connections are even real. The human woman has a degree in finance and worked at her brother's logistics company for two decades before deciding to get into being a spacer. She danced around why that was but you suspect it was a falling out with family. Still, jumping from a desk job into space gives you, for some reason, pause when the woman is more beautiful than she has any right to be at 45. She is right in line with what you expected to pay so there is that. Then there’s the Zentarii. Gruff. No nonsense. Built like a tank even for his species which practically makes him as tough as a battleship’s hull. Has more experience than anyone you know personally and has done just about everything there is to do as a spacer. Unfortunately, he wants more than twice what you wanted to pay for an xo. Hiring him might mean you don’t make any profit at all.>Rhyzari >Human >Zentarii >Keep looking ------- Regardless of who you pick as xo roll 5d6 to negotiate their salary. You attempt to negotiate with her on her salary she refuses to budge. She knows what she’s worth according to her. Given that her requested salary is what you were willing to pay anyway, and the potential issues with the ship, you agree to her requirements and bring her up to speed on the situation with your ship. She agrees to go with you to the dealer prior to both of you doing the necessary paperwork related to her hiring. Striding out of Henker’s, Val nearly must jog to keep up with you. Pulling out your comtab you message Djekhet, your chief engineer, and arrange for him to meet you at the dealer. “They may be trying to get one by you but ships with a hull under a certain category that were built prior to 2030 were grandfathered into old records requirements. It’s possible the work was done but never logged with the registry. Most never bother with the paperwork if it’s not required,” Val remarks as she struggles to keep up with you. “I’m not surprised you weren’t aware, the only reason I know is because my brother still has several of that model year for specialized hauls at his company. It’s not really something that would come up regularly anyway.” The half mile walk to the dealer would have been much faster in the shuttle but it gave Djekhet time to get there before you. The Oru engineer flashes a diagnostic scanner to you. “This will leave no question about the status of the jump drive in an instant but the onboard computers will take half an hour to check. It’s not the computers themselves—well, aside from one faulty math coprocessor—but the firmware and software and that’s a lot of version numbers to check,” the four-eyed being says with what sounds almost like a Lunar accent, which, you’re told, sounds virtually identical to a French accent though you’ve never been to Earth let alone what’s left of France. You quickly introduce the engineer to your new first mate before heading in to speak with Lengroth, the Yttraxian who sold you your ship. The three of you barge into his office while he’s working with someone you assume to be a customer startling both. Before he can speak you demand he explain whether the necessary overhaul was done.

Since we're behind I'm posting an update one way or the other within 5 hours or so.>Enhanced sensor suite. You won't lose cargo space but you'll use one of your four available internal hardpoints. Go with this if you want to dip into exploration. Will also aid mining/salvage. >Mining pod. A combination laser/tractor pod with a duct system that will dump ore into your cargo hold. Uses one of two external hardpoints. Not recommended that you dump ore straight into your cargo bay floor but doable. A proper ore bay is best. >External freight rails. Increase your freight capacity to 1400 SCU by using both available external hardpoints on container scaffolding.

>>5804925 (You), but if we're doing this, sensors is the part I'd pick of the offered ones.

GalacticFreelancerQM !!Kfm1nG03tJq ID:yD3CoI4O Tue 31 Oct 2023 22:43:02 No. 5813641 Report You nod to Djekhet. "Get started on the ship." As the Oru hustles out of the room you step closer to the thin, wirey framed Yttraxian. "You know Lengroth you've done well enough with your business. It's a shame that you've gotten pulled into the seedy underbelly of the galaxy," you say, sadly. "Isn't that right, Val?" "Absolutely," your new first mate says. "If only you had just reported those items when they came in." "But you tried to sweep it under the rug by installing them in some random ship, hoping that no one would notice." You step to Lengroth's side and put your arm around him. "Now you've left me with just two options. I report you or I pretend this never happened after you install a shiny new sensor pallet. That new Stellar Dynamics model I've heard about lately." Lengroth lets out a sound as if he's vomiting though nothing sprays out of him. The vocalex on his shoulder translate his words as his speaks, "How can know you won't turn me in later?" "You don't but I'm not leaving you any other options." "Accepted." Again the Yttraxian makes a vomiting sound. "Will bring pallet to bay. Lasht in shtock, your engineer inshtall though." "Agreed." You pat the dealer hard on the shoulder and leave the room with Val following close behind.>Contact the rest of your crew to report to the ship and depart as soon as the pallet is hooked up. >Check the local index and see if you can get a job hauling to the same location as your first job. Might as well since you're here. >Write in

We can check to see if there’s something urgent to consider but I’m leaning to
