It's another stormy night in the small castle hidden in the Pyrenees hills. Lightnings have made it their custom to strike the stone roofs again and again blackening it throughout the years, forming creepy shadows on its walls. Sullen women, lamenting their men, make their way through the barren gardens.
The castle walls themselves are black from the past several sieges by berber units but thankfully, Christ the Lord sent them dysentery every time and they moved on with their fighting to other more strategic places. The lord of the castle, viscount Tristand, received the small castle from Charlemagne himself, as a part of an attempt to fully Christianize the South of Frankia, the current kingdom of Aquitaine. Tristand has been summoned several months ago by his duke for a military campaign to get rid the Frankish Riviera from the muslim occupants, taking 40 local men under his banners. Only the old and cripple are left with the women, except for a few guards.
Viscountess Ermilla is laying in her bed in a white nightgown, a beautiful blue sapphire cross parting her breasts. Her giant pregnant belly is forming a hill of its own beneath the wool sheets. Her two maids are making her company, much more than usual now, after her condition has made her less mobile. What if you have twins, my lady? The viscount will be very pleased... Teofano says with a devilish grin. She is originally from a small greek colony, somewhere on the Mediterranean coastline, that got decimated by muslim raiding parties and her father, losing all means to take care of the smaller children in his big household, sent the fourteen year old girl as a helper in your castle.
The Lady Ermilla came with child before a full moon Arrixaka, your other helper, remembers thoughtfully so it is not possible to be twins, as it is known. But her child will be very strong. Arrixaka is not much older than Teofano and her roots are Basque, as everyone else in the castle. Her people only recently converted to Christianity, however their pagan ways are still strong. Teofano and Arrixaka start a lively back and forth that ends up with a playful childish wrestle on the bed where Ermilla is.
