Because you're my favorite agents, I've found this fantastic deal online for a very relaxing almost most inclusive conference cottage in the lower upper mountainways, you know the ones, they're by the forest, and maybe you'd like to go?
It's very nice. They have . . . Goat cheese? I think? Sheep cheese? It's some kind of ungulate based diary product, I'm sure, but I did only browse wikimedia for five minutes listen okay I need a favour, do this tiny little thing for me and I promise I'll sign off on your next report minimum questions asked the THING IS Blue Rat was supposed to be investigating this particuar report but you know Blue Rat gets and one thing led to another and now they're being hunted through the streets of Prague by Interpol and we're a little shortstaffed and I need to have a full rundown on this file on the desk Monday, so, I just, look, you go, you check it out, you have a looksee, you enjoy some ... cheese? tea? cottage life? you give it a full five star review on yelp! I promise it won't be anything like last time! It'll be nice!
Just stay away from the border, they've got a whole civil war going over there. Maybe its about what kind of cheese is best? Look you get on the fight and it's a sixteen hour one anyway so I'll have time to do the proper briefing by the time you touch down!
RIGHT, so we've agreed then? Fantastic Agent, knew I could count on you. That's why you're one of my favorites, you know? Right?

While Sidewinder checks the map to work out how the car ended up down this winding dirt road, dust plumes mar the morning air. Rugged techanicals roam the landscape, coming to a stop at a respectful distance albeit close enough that Pockets can spot the armed men and woman in the back. The front van rumbles slowly close, and as it comes to a halt a young man slips out of the front seat. Walks with a euphoric rythm to his footfalls. Keeps one hand occupied tying with the holster at his side, piece of kit that doesn't match the rest of his equipment. This whole outfit is all make-do scraps and seven bits of surplus Russian gear to what looks like either imported or appropriated NATO cast-off. He's pale, sweaty and raps his glove hands on the glass near the drivers side.

Though with the assurance that Team Won are lost tourists in need of a little helpful direction from the fine representatives of the local nationalist separatist militia, eventually, they let Sidewinder throw the car into reverse and begin backing away. Though Fiasco almost throws the moment when Sidewinder turns the car around the Twitcher spots the handgun through the glass and twitches right five meters back in one fluid reflexive movement and throws up his hands. Inks nods, frazzled from lack of caffiene and beset by the buffeting winds of an impending crash. But then, she's always peetering on the erratic edge. Drinks coffee like people breathe. Holiday puffs his cigarette. Grunts. Yeah, he lost the cars. So what? They were in his hands, he locked the car, and then they weren't. No big deal. Walking is good for your health. Work on your attitude, friend. Bracing mountain air? Who even needs a car. Other than that the scene is simple because the primary missing component is 33% of the Agents meant to be here. By all rights, Fiasco and Vertex should already have swept the perimeter. Wonder what the hold up is. -- Inks gives a slight hummingbird nudge of the head. Impressed. The rookies know their stuff. Yes, exactly, Agent Holiday rammed a few bushes on the way in due to skidding in the mud and rain, and he almost clipped a deer on the forest path over. Yes, they're out in the rain because he then conspired to lock the car keys inside the rental vehicle which - see prior state of vehicle, re, being a rental - has some pretty sensitive anti-theft mechanisms and so slammed the doors shut almost the moment they left it. Yes, the shadows in this place are almost too deep. The old cottage wood must have shaded them from direct sunlight for years. Thats what being in a valley in the mountaineous foothills will do for you. Bet some parts of this place never see the sun, if the sun ever shone in this rain-soaked country. And yes, Agent Sunday, that is indeed probably more important than all the other stuff - because why exactly are we standing around in a parking lot where someone's left casings on the ground from some kind of gun? They didn't hear anything earlier, and they're cold. Pushed about by the weight of rain. Maybe some intrepid hunter wanted to scare off a deer before it molested his vehicle. Holiday scoffs, finds that unlikely. -- Missing teammates, mysterious bullet casings, rain that never ends and a deposit Holiday won't get back. This night is off to a good start.

Notch a temporary +1 Push and Inks mild approval. Well, we can stand around in the rain or we can move on up. Reception is up ahead, winding road. We'll have to leave the cars anyway, won't chance them on the path. Aught and Asclepius have done a quick sweep around the area, seen if anything stuck out. They wander back in. Inks sweeps the bright-sun of the flashlight beam across their faces and gives a little nod. Anything? No, just rustic home cottages, empty out of season, a few parked cars, flickering half-made streetlights imported here from somewhere in the 17th century and mud. Quiet place, really. They did see a dog but it ran away. Inks nods. Sensible thing, she'd do that too if she saw Aught coming. -- The reception and primary village is just up ahead. It's a short walk through a winding scenic path with overhanging trees, but the gravel gets slippery in this much rain. Car might skid or get stuck.>Do we chance it with the cars? And Team Won is supposed to be here by now. It's always more comfortable to move in a group, but if someone is currently incinerating incriminating papers or shredding all the files that spell out a master plan to end the world in a tide of blood, or, who knows, not pay their property taxes, they won't wait. >>5934749 >>5934750 Listen I am really very terribly sorry about last time, but since we did eventually recover your luggage somewhere around Iceland I think we can at least agree that it's not entirely our fault it was subsequently lost again in that volcano eruption! Okay? I can do a lot of stuff but my powers strictly stop at tectonic plate shifting, right?
Agent Carlen, this place is supposed to be a quiet cottage conference centre. The most hairraising thing in this place is yuppies and executive personal assistants speed-running how to deliver stakeholder pitches. This really should not be another crisis zone. Other than the civil war they've got going on. We've got satelittes in the sky and telemetry isn't picking up anything. Give me twenty more minutes and I'lll find a way to analyse the footage and we can trace who has been leaving all these spent casings everywhere. And look it's so rustic! Tranquil! Serene! It's nice! It won't go all pearshaped!
Command told me to stop saying "I promise" after last time, so I can't and I won't but there shouldnt be a need to, it'll be FINE.
Now, unfortunately, because we're dealing with xenophenomena, regulation does mean I have to blind you to some of the, err, pertinent detail. You know how it goes. If you know what you're going to know, then in case someone here is a slice of the old Foresight or prophetic talent then they can glean it better. Outsmarting prophetic wisdom is hard work.
So get the briefcase open and then the info packet in there will bring you up to speed faster than a ramming van.
Sorry that analogy just slipped right out, I'm not entirely sure why.
By the way have you seen any... geese?
TS Liren !!8Og8gGv6k3r
Quoted By:
Not for any particularly reasons you understand. I'm just learning to take a healthy new interest in the wide wonderful flora and fauna of our delightful world. Did you know geese are some of the largest waterfowls in the world? I didn't, until about twenty hours ago.
TS Liren !!8Og8gGv6k3r
Quoted By:
It's not that I'm worried about geese, okay, agent. They're just birds. Birds that mate for life. Which is very impressive, I can barely get someone to sign up for a four week training seminar in firearms handling. But you haven't seen any geese, have you? Because there aren't any around, right, agent? Because there wouldn't be, you know, geese. Any... any unusally large amount of local waterfowl would be purely happenstance and rather unrelated to any on-going activity in the area.
TS Liren !!8Og8gGv6k3r
Quoted By:
So anyway agent Carleen things will be fine, I promise this is just a normal cottage centre restort precariously placed somewhere border inspection agents go to have conniptions and there are no large black geese at this resort so things will be quite fine.
TS Liren !!8Og8gGv6k3r
Quoted By:
Look if you see any black geese just don't aggravate them they're very territorial water fowl. not that there'd be any reason to aggravate any of them anyway because there aren't any at this resort, Agent Carlen, and this is not a crisis area and I have not just sent you in as a last minute replacement for the Blue Rat heavy tactical section because they got caught up in a manhunt in Prague it'll be fine, it'll be fine, it will be fine. No Vanguard Agent has ever died from having their eyes pecked out by a goose. Okay? And the fact that a collection of geese is a skein of geese is incidental normative determinism won't make this get weird

did YOU know, Agent Aught, that historically, geese are known as watchful guardians, loyal and sure, and that ancient tribes people living in wetlands used them as guardians?
Apparently, totemically, symbolically, if you believe in the transference paradigm of thaumatheological tulpa construel, the Goose is the bird-word for clear teamwork, concise communication and strong family bonds. Maybe because they hiss? I can just imagine that. Commando geese, hissing, watching, communicating the precise location of intruders into a quiet seaside village amongst themselves, lying in wait, ready, because birds are light sleepers and sensitive to vibrations because of their hollow-bones so they can pick up the movement of heavy vehicles ha ha ha ha

The sudden boom of subsonics slam through the inside of the rental car as Vertex and Pocket jostles in the back, the sudden acceleration and head-knocking ripping the gun from Vertex's hands. The C7 slips under the seat, and the agent realises he had just enough time to turn the safety off and enough time to throw himself into a braced position as the incoming lead van, suddenly completely at the mercy of gravity, acceleration and the curses of the driver trying to struggle with the loss of a wheel at high speed turns things into a display of the joys of elementary grade physics The gaggle of people in the back hold on for dear life and with the shouts and screams, they respond with surprising effectiveness to the low boom of gunfire. Rifles get unslung, raised, and they'd have put a round through the windshield and our rental coverage if one of them hadn't gotten flung into the others in the commotion. They're herbivores, mostly, so their fearsome beaks aren't quite and thoug they're aggressive they shouldn't be much against tear-resistant suit fabric with tactical lining and the odd vital pad insert. The wounded goose, deciding to argue its own case, punches sixty iron teeth clean through Etch's pantsleg and tears into his leg. Agent Vertex, hold up. Okay, finish putting that plate into its housing, then hold up. There. In the road. When Fiasco's shot clipped the front wheel and sidewinder threw that right curve. The people in the back of their lead van. One of them almost got thrown out. Dropped his rifle. Lucky thing. For us, I mean. Normally this kind of baleful malignant accident never pays out in our favour, it'd be a bit of a fiasco, but maybe something is watching out for us. Sidewinder, pick it up and give it a scan. Pockets, going by your description of their slack-jawed terorr struck faces they were all . . . Old? Well, no, not ancient, just, you know, not exactly fresh out of college either. It's something to go on, sure enough. Thanks. Huhhhh. A gaggle of old grey bearded hunters with older guns. That's a Mosin, sure enough. Weird finish, though. Is that . . OTs variant? CompanyCommand !!8Og8gGv6k3r ID:t+zEcABj Sun 25 Feb 2024 12:00:32 No. 5935516 Report Agent Aclepius rolls out of the rental car as Aught clambers out through the sidedoor and elbows through the receptionist window in a spray of glass. They make it with seconds to spare as a driver with a grim set of determination spots the sudden appearance of an obstacle on the road and then hits the accelerator, speeding up. He throws it into a hard right and the old van screams, suspension struggling, and he starts to loose control but (un)luckily the rental car takes the brunt of the impact. The door that Aclepius rolled out of is ripped clean off and the vehicle itself scrapes along the edge of the reception, but the van and its gaggle of armed hunters recover and roar off into the night. Leshy rolls away, coming up, gun out, and almost turns to draw a bead but the reckless drivers are roaring down the slim forest path that leads to Village Príšerný. At least the village is empty and their reckless driving can't endanger anyone else. -- Etch, Inks, Sunday, Holiday and (to Inks surprise, Aught), sweep the reception. It's been tossed but good, cute cottage charm ground beneath the heavy boots of the hunters. Flyers torn off of shelves, tables flipped over, pillows cut open. Holiday barks a cheery "clear" and then secures the back. Buzzes the team-frequency a beat later. More hunters up ahead, loading a van, in the middle of an argument. Etch sweeps the interior as Inks prepares to provide first aid to the receptionist, but since Aught is closer, Inks instead pries a few glass shards out of the affable agent with a smile. Just like you to end up on my desk, eh? Heheh. Sit still. That one went into your shoulder. Heavy glass here in eastern Europe. Sunday dials his friend again... -- TS Liren: Oh, I see what's happening. Someone's playing *tricks*. Team Hyacinth, Garuda, tactical advisory - we aren't picking anything up on this lot because they've got an interference crew setup somewhere. They're live-filtering their signals, probably local jammers and care. They HAVE a net, but these people aren't hunters. Too good for that. These guys are pro. Analog equipment doesn't register so well on scans, and any other electronic kit they have they're keeping lowkey and muted. Etch, judging by the bookings you've swept, I think I know what building their equipment is set up in. Four occupants either van, three vans so far, one driver, that's fifteen. Simply wary. Semi automatic hunting rifles against Holidays reflexes with an automatic. Close call. They know. Good stars man. Grizzley bears would think bringing that kind of thing to bear is unsporting. Small mercy, at least, that our modern body armor might have some tricks against the projectile. Looks like they're using hollow-points with . . . litanies carved in them? Old school.
Good wooden stock. Solid optics. Doubles as a club once you run out of ammo. I think you might be able to bury that in the trenches for six decades and it still fires. Actually, I can't tell the makers marks on that one, so maybe it already has been and Boris just dug it out recently.

>>5936166 Deal with the Fae, Sunday?
Well, I'd imagine we try not to! Surely making deals with them is the last thing anyone would do, isn't that how they get you?
Self perpetuating mythologies have unidentified interactions with causal mainline reality. You get woods that go on forever, birds that turn into people, doors that open in hedges to place unbound. Glamour-stuff and dream-thoughts, Agent. It doesn't respect physics. They're beings of pacts and power, but at least the same pacts that give them power makes them predictable. Predictability is good, in this line of work.
But we don't have a lot of information on The Fair Folk, if they even exist. I mean you get people who claim it all the time, but the existence of exonomic entities that live in the Wyld beyond our sphere would imply that the Wild Hunt is real. We all agree it isn't, because if it was, someone would have to tell the UN Security Council about it. So this is novel territory, I'm afraid. We're writing the book as we speak.
>>5936174 Chicken-leg house? Boris nods. They were, at that. It is fast. They wanted to draw it into an ambush. That's why the cauldron is strapped to the back of a van and ten hunters roared on ahead, to set up, get the heavier gear ready.

>>5936596 >>5936484 Yes, Agent Vertex, that's tactical support. For tactical and tech situations. Support. That means my job is to support you doing your job. The job that you are here to do.
The job that Tactical Team Blue Rat could not do because I accidentally told some friends in Interpol where they would be overnighting so they got tangled up in a whole little bomb scare.
That job. The job that you got on a rush order economy class plane to do instead of Blue Rat, because Blue Rat with all their tactical gear and long format briefing on the importance of an observe-and-report stance on ancient horrors, are not here to do. That job. The job that no else but my favorite agents got emergency shuffled into taking on because everyone else mysteriously had their emails lock them out. That job. The job that Blue Rat was originally going to do!
But since Blue Rat Whiskerlead isn't here to specify what exactly it was their job was and since someone keeps mysteriously causing all their attempts to call base to loop and drop, then you will just have to display some sort of groundside operational intiative, and as I am purely your tactical support liason, I will do my job to support you every single step of the way of the job that you decide to do.
So what you need to do, Agent Vertex, is to carefully weigh the evidence array'd before you and come to a conclusion about the job that you're here to do. Which is a task description that is entirely within your responsibility zone in our org chart, and I have checked the charters, that absolutely, categorically will hold up in post-incident review. Am I making myself clear?
I could not possibly in any way what so ever order you to solve this situation in any one particular way or another, because of course, I am, as I keep saying, simply here for tactical support, which I am just going to repeat for the benefit of any oversight management members listening to this recorded conversation later, I never explicitly ordered anyone to fight an ancient child-eating witch!
It absolutely, categorically is not possible to trace any missing briefing memorandums accidentally falling into an incinerator to me and as I said quite clearly earlier nothing in any mission brief I'm aware of specifies we need to maintain control over enormous, outsized broth cooking implements to ensure that we complete the job that Blue Rat was sent here to do.
The job that they can't specify for us because someone keeps putting them on hold. That job, Agent Vertex. The job that you will then have to simply make up your own mind about the contents of, based on the information before your eyes and the classified materials you have access to, which surely no one tampered with before you all left base, I can assure you of this, I personally checked that no one else had tampered with it.
And when you make up your mind I will support you every step of the way! So just make up your mind, Agent Vertex!

… Hm. Moss covered hut. Imagining quality degradation. Best I can confirm we still have five Birds and Bees in that lodge, preparing gear. Baba Shaya mentioned she thinks they will return when she have Afanasyev’s sword to Agent Aught.
Two theories, Agent. think it’s possible the Geese saw you inflict violence on the Hunters and thinks you an ally of its Mistress, Agent Pocket. None of the geese have actively interfered with our mission yet. Even the snap on Etch’s pantsleg did not draw undue blood. I… note with some concerns they are concentrating around Boris’ gaggle of huntsmen.
Second theory: you flanked it and surprised it. If it is manipulating perception somehow that is a glamour. All notes we have indicate Glamours only work by intent design.

sigh. well. i guess if you need to get somewhere fast, agents, in a precarious situation, agent pockets has the right of it. i mean you can't outrun fate. you'll just die tired. but if you want to, it's agility to move. then an action to refresh agility and move further. then you can *all in*. you can even push. that gives maximal tactical control. alternatively, move with agility and then take an action to refresh agility and move again. then all in a sprint to get somewhere. yeah, you roll, but you might manage a short-cut. i don't know why you would. shortcuts are just... how you get to where you're going faster. and we're all just... going to the same place.. >it might not be apparent but vanguard agents can hustle >agility to move (5). 1 action to refresh agility. then you can move again (10). then all in, repeat (15). that's far. >alternative agility to move (5) spend action to sprint (rolled action, moves you a little extra but requires navigating. bad in slippery places) >all in and push take you even further. >though moving at such speed is obvious, and you might collide with things. so be careful. don't run around in the dark heedlessly. use a flashlight. guide each other via signal - marking a point makes it easier to get to.

As Agent Fiasco and the Fox enjoy a light bout of medical malpractice and fine whiskey, the door rattles under the assault of multiple beaks. Twock twock twock. Still, these old wooden doors are cut from the stoic trees of dense deep forests. They do not open easily for the uninvited.

Though, as Agent Fiasco discovered, the windows offer no such impediment to the motivated. Sharp shards of glass rain through the interior as a skein of blackfeathered fowl foul fiendish foes pour into the building, hissing. The Fox mewls, displeased at such a home-invasion. Then from the backdoor - the thick, heavy, barred backdoor - wood splinters explode inwards. Oh no.

CompanyCommand !!8Og8gGv6k3r ID:t+zEcABj Sat 02 Mar 2024 17:00:48 No. 5941316 Report Badger #1 rolls the car around, steady, as the others stow their rifles and prepare to operate an impromptu soup kitchen for waterfowl. Wooden spoons, ladles, canteens and hands - it all works to slosh the gloopy contents of Boris borsch everywhere. The geese attack it with a gusto, and Badger #1 rolls forward, steady, steady-- the rain is picking up, the road inclines, and the mass of feathers and beaks is dense, the headlight of the car scattered by the midnight dark feathers of Baba Yaga's servants. But progress, like the sun rising, is steady. The hunters are a steel-souled lot, they know their bushcraft, and there! The headlights sweep past the hill, lighting up the love suite at number #13, grand and opulently perched with a magnificent view of the quiet resort below it. And then the van thumbs, lifting, brief and slow, as it rolls over something on the road. Badger #1 looks out through the windshield with sudden horror. The night explodes into hissing frenzy and then a beak rams through the window of the car in a spray of glass. -- The impromptu comms-channel explodes in chatter, overwatch teams begging for permissions to fire, reports coming in, Nikolai working to shift the data but with the nodes under such strain, there's simply too much information to manage at once. The system starts fritzing out, under assault by data-entropy, probability dysfunction and the sheer malice of the cosmos. -->Signal Interference! "Unsanitary conditions? In my hijacked fairytale cabin?! Beg your pardon gents - I'd fetch your coats but apparently this jumped-up germophobe toaster can't handle a little rustic ambiance without throwing a sook! No dramas though, I have a solution."
> 2AGI : Tip over the alcohol cabinet, causing the fine display case to tumble vaguely in the direction of the south-eastern door before slamming into the ground with a cacophonous clatter to breaking glass. "Bit of liberal sterilization over here!"
> 1AGI : In a lackadaisically gesture, Fiasco flings the half-drained bottle of whiskey in his hand towards the northern entrance, shattering across the floor. "Farewell alcohol my beloved - through your noble sacrifice we shall achieve absolute disinfection!"
> 1AGI : Fiasco leaps up onto the bed and peers derisively down at the autodoc. "Aaaannd all clean! So, what say you now *your majesty*? Has this operating theatre been uplifted to your exacting standar--?"
"Degradation Fields? Severe Probability? Presence of?!"
"So many recreational beverages slaughtered upon the altar of medical professionalism and for what - for this, this senseless technobabble?!"
"Oh-ho no. Immediate reprogramming is required. Time to implement some drastic matainence procedures."
> 1AGI - Draw service pistol. > ACT - Unload clip into the Autodoc's interface panel. > REACT - Draw up the bed's blanket to break line of sight with the visiting Geese and the stricken Autodoc. "Hey, anomalous canine creature? You still conscious? That metallic quack didn't lop your head off while I was inebriating the cabin did it?"
"Speaking of horrible death, and just between you and me, being inside of an explosively combusting building has gotta rank among my top five greatest personal fears. Seriously, just being in the vicinity of an uncontrollable, aggressively expanding fire is among the worst things I can imagine. Just... incredibly indescribably traumatic - 10 years of therapy and two dozen pulverized stress balls, minimum. Fortunately, given the innately inflammable properties of alcohol, we needn't worry about the ever-present threat of spontaneous combustion at the moment, even despite standing in a wooden room filled with open flames and erratically sparking electronics. Truly, that wonder-liquid is a gift from the heavens."

Drinking on the job is against regulation, so Agent . . . this says Aclepius? We've checked the logs and we're writing you up for a five week mandatory seminar on appropriate workplace behaviour, which will not, under most circumstances, include flagrant drinking while on duty managing very expensive informational networks. We've assigned the TS a crash cognitivist restructuring course to root out the existentialism. Prepare to stand-by for network normalization. You appear to have garbled code in your mesh network - this readout indicates your primary signal processing node is a portable laptop located somewhere north of Transnistra. That is *also* against regulation, Agents. Mandatory seminars on IT security operations for the modern age when you return. Now, as for your present tactical situation -- . . . . . . You absolute incorugible screwups. Get your shit together. Those civilians are over-exposured to uncontrolled xeno-events. Keep the hobbyist monster hunters clear of the operations area, this is a job for professionals. We're fast-tracking a ground-team to your location via Sliač airbase. Local meteorology forecasts are dire looking, presume delay due to storm-front formation. Arrival unknown at this time, will update. Your job was to make soup, agents. What calamitous level of absolute shitshow have you managed to cook up instead? -- ( While the voice of the wire contends with barely restrained levels of ire, fire spreads and alarmed hunters scream, flee, some firing rifles in panick.
