You are Ushi Walker, the half-Japanese/half-American wielder of the mighty quirk “Everything is Bigger in Texas”, one of U.A.'s… many? You need to reconsider how to describe yourself, what with no longer being one of the top five in class… But there's no time for that right now! You need to focus on avoiding these spinning dummies that are starting to close in on you, track one of them in particular that you reckon will be avoiding you, and keep an ear out for Endeavor as he lectures both you and Shoto. As the wooden ‘crowd’ draws near, you consider your options for a beat, before settling on a little trick of yours that may help you get a bead on the target dummy. It could help with the rest of them too, depending on just how random their movements are. Considering they seem to be moving awfully close to each other without ever nicking one another, it can't be all that random. “Ah think Ah’ve got something for this… Y’all think an electrical outlet cover and handkerchief got about the same heft to them?” You ponder aloud, placing your left hand on your hip and bringing your right to your face, tapping your chin with a finger. A quick glance at the father and son pair lets you see their narrowed eyes, confused, in that way that only family members can mirror each other. “Er, nevermind…” You look away from the Todorokis, all the better to keep your eyes on the mechanical mob. With your hand on your hip, you place all five of your fingers on your leg and start rhythmically shifting minute amounts of mass in and out of yourself and the structure beneath you, using your quirk to get a sense of the training hall directly surrounding you in your mind. -->> 5834679 > 10, 5, 5, 5, 8, 10, 3, 10 -- <span class="mu-g">The traditional architecture of the Todoroki estate works in your favor. It and the training hall are, of course, made of wood and you <span class="mu-i">know</span> wood. You may have never set eyes on your own skeleton… only more bits than you'd like, but you have years of experience feeling how it behaves with "Everything is Bigger in Texas". How it gives and bends, expands and contracts, and how it reverberates, both the heartwood and the sapwood. That makes it fairly simple to quickly ‘dial in’ to the hall’s structure, despite being a step removed from actually touching it.</span> You are also thankful, for the first time, that the hall isn’t too padded as the added soft layer “muffles” how you perceive the dummies roaming over the floor. Their mechanical vibrating and rotating do you no favors however, making tracking any specific mass much more a hassle; the soft cypress wood doesn’t help you any for that matter either.

Makes sense. The outlet was just stationary and already <span class="mu-i">part of the wall</span> when you tried this at Edgeshot’s tower. Usually, using your quirk gives you a snapshot of what you are touching and what <span class="mu-i">that</span> is touching. Now that you are trying to keep track of several moving, rumbling, and shaking objects over several uses, it's turning into a bit of a blur. You keep your quirk at it though, stepping to the side as dummies pass near you without posing a threat. It really is like a crowd in public.>"Is one of the lessons to withhold evidence from the police? Keep it to myself and risk the villain being released for insufficient evidence?" You hear your friend bluntly ask his father over the din and ratcheting of the crowd. Seems like your little display earlier encouraged him to take a stand of his own. <span class="mu-g">Meanwhile, your attempts to figure out the location of the target dummy was like trying to follow the exact location of a particular ice cube as you shake a filled water bottle. You hadn’t spotted it visually yet and the general motion of the dummies is the most you’ve gotten out of your quirk for the time being. Which is enough to sense the two converging dummies, approaching from both of your 'blind' spots on either side, behind you. You don't bother turning around. One seems set to crash its ‘arm’ right into you. The other maintains a healthy space from its companion, just far enough you can’t jump out of the way of the first without exposing yourself to getting trampled by the second.</span> <span class="mu-r">Trying to maintain focus on your quirk, you do your best to dodge them, or rather, minimize the impact. Cocking your hips to the left, arching your back and shuffling ever so slightly, you turn what felt like it could have been a wind-knocking hit to your abdomen into a glancing strike against the side of your left hand along with a slap to the breast. You guess it <span class="mu-i">really is</span> like the public…</span> <span class="mu-i">Ow!</span> Oh right, you are still a bit bruised there… You reassure yourself that there's no way it did any real damage, but it still stung like hell. As the dummies pirouette away from you, you manage to give each a slap on the ‘back’. You play it off as a slight push for the inappropriate touch it gave you. Far less than what you'd give anyone on the sidewalk, that's for sure… And in doing so loaned a fraction of an ounce to each bot. A little tap of your quirk, to set some baselines.> “Keep focus, Walker…" You hear Endeavor chastise you, then continue to lecture Shoto. "No, you will most certainly not withhold evidence of a crime. But simply handing it over as you did was barely any better than just surrendering to the villain. I would have you learn to submit it through the proper channels." Seems like he's being purposefully loud enough for you also to take in his matter-of-fact ‘wisdom’.

>Write In >”Ain’t replacin’ an’ vaultin’ what the police’d do too? Ah dun’ understand what’s more effective about havin’ an agency do it.” Moreover, it’s not easy to hand over that sort of thing at all. Like 90% of childhood SA doesn’t get reported to the authorities, let alone having to hand over photo evidence to your direct family and/or colleagues. But I don’t think litigating the amount of trust/closeness Shoto has with Endeavor and/or Burnin’ is going to be helpful here. Honestly, Enji should be respecting that Shoto had it in him to come forward with this at all. But he is just that much of a prick, so I shouldn’t be surprised.

You've been hit harder and you are so close now, you can <span class="mu-i">literally feel it</span>. <span class="mu-b">What's another batch of bruises at this point anyways?</span>>"Yes, U.A. have managed your public image and incidents thus far. In matters like these, they uphold our motto to an adequate degree. Ultimately, unlike the police, they are an invested party. There you are.</span></span>>“But you will not always be a student. And you are supposed to have already grown as a fledgeling hero outside of its walls. Are you even paying attention?!" <span class="mu-r">After that, You feel like you are right back in front of that newly opened barbeque pit. This time facing away, away from the danger, never quite knowing just how close you are to falling in. Your instincts tell you to turn around, scramble, anything to protect yourself from its rising flames.</span> <span class="mu-g">But you resist that impulse, just long enough to focus on the sense from your quirk and confirm what you found. With a deep breath you let go of your leg as you stand back up straight and skirt around one last wandering member of the crowd. You can finally focus on normal sights and sounds again. Now the heat from the ‘pit’ doesn’t seem all that bad, really. Completely expected, even. You are a pitmaster, after all.</span> "Ah can complete this challenge of yours, for starters." You respond, raising your hand over your head and horns, turning back to where the Todorokis stand. "Uh, how do Ah stop them?">"Complete? You did nothing." The pro hero says, dragging the last word out before clapping twice. The dummies and their wooden limbs stop in their tracks, a few of them rotating in place to align and open a path back out for you. >"You just stood in the dark, and got hit like an out of order light post. You go from dodging me with finesse weeks ago, to this. Is your intent to make a mockery of this lesson?"

"Nah, Ah participated for nearly the whole conversation didn’t Ah? Also, Ah got this." <span class="mu-g">Instead of walking out, you kneel down and place your hand on the corner of a pad that spreads out to your left, the pad underneath which the ‘knot” stopped on. You take your time with the mass you have remaining and slowly push it through both the pad and into the dummy hiding in the midst of the group. Just as slowly, a dummy in the throng starts to peek up above the rest of its siblings. As it grew the other bots began scooting away from it, one part from being displaced by the pad expanding beneath them, another from their programming to avoid knocking into one another overriding Endeavor’s halt command. Soon enough, a single dummy towers over its backed-off brethren, making a handkerchief, closer to tea towel sized now, hanging from just below one of its set of arms and fully visible to all three of you. Scrawled across the fabric are characters in what you recognize is Endeavor’s handwriting. “Issss this your dummy?” You look back at the light source, Endeavor’s flames, and strike a pose, placing one hand on your cocked hip like a game show model with the other gesturing to the newly embiggened robot as if it was a prize. “...What does 'Character, Courage, Competence' mean anyways?" You wish you had a camera to capture the moment. He looks absolutely baffled. It's there for less than a second, but you will remember it forever.</span> You walk up to the target dummy and give a pat on one of its arms while tugging the handkerchief loose. "Good job, by the way. Not sure if y'all are one machine or-" You try to be friendly to it, in case it’s got the same level of like awareness you’re used to for bots from U.A.. But you are rudely interrupted.>"Walker. Come here, and explain yourself." Endeavor calls out, and you know better than to keep him waiting any longer. "Right-o, sure." You exit the crowd and walk up to Endeavor, opting to stand closer to Shoto again, leaning your shoulder against his right side for some cooling relief. His dad isn’t raging, but his anger is still burning hot. You might feel better about being near the heat, <span class="mu-r">but you still feel far too innately flammable to get any closer.</span> You inhale, about to try explaining the minutiae of the tactic you used to find the target dummy without ever really going looking for it. Then you think better of it. <span class="mu-i">"...Ninja tricks~. Courtesy of Edgeshot's internship"</span>. You can't resist rubbing it in.>"...I see." Endeavor stares down at you for a second and nods, looking far too pleased with himself. He didn't teach you anything of what you just did. "Then that quirk of yours is even more flexible than it seems. And it was already fairly impressive."

"Huh? How?..." You don't even get to finish your confused question, as Endeavor points at his son.>"Shoto." He commands. >"You are steaming. From your quirk." Shoto says with a nod, then continues. "I believe there was a faint white wisp over you, and..." He stops there. Huh.>"Whatever it is, it should be fostered just as much as any other facet of your quirk. As luck would have it, you can practice it just about anywhere, even in the middle of dark, while idling." Endeavor gives you that knowing smile that, in hindsight, you’ve seen far too often in-person since you first met him. The one that makes you feel like meat hooked up for grading. As if he just found something that he can use to his advantage. As promised, and per usual, from then on Endeavor had you sit on the sidelines focusing on channeling your quirk to sense mass while Shoto was drilled in the same challenge. You couldn’t even fake doing nothing as the lingering vapor from EiBiT wouldn’t stick around and give you away to your mentor- No, Edgeshot was a mentor… So instead, to avoid the wrath of your <span class="mu-i">taskmaster</span>, you decided to spend your time channeling and “following” Shoto around the training hall as he tried navigating, avoiding, and dodging the dummies, with some added fire control exercises thrown in. And by Shoto, you mean his training shoes. Unlike the dummies, you can't just go around rapidly shifting the mass of people without their consent. Or their knowing. At one point you impulsively tried to warn him of a bot coming up from behind before it knocked him upside the head. But another flare up by Endeavor just as you tried to speak up showed you that your time being anything more than an idle witness to Shoto’s training again had come to an end for the day. You winced and squeezed the handkerchief in your hand for each of the blows your friend took for the remainder of the evening, as his father made him pinpoint the target dummy over and over again. By the time you got home, you felt the usual clawing hunger again from using your quirk, but also <span class="mu-i">drained</span> in a way that you hadn’t experienced since moving to Japan. Only when you were training for the U.A. exam at Home, on the ranch, seeing how fast you could draw on your quirk or just how big you could make yourself in an instant, have you felt something similar. It was just covered up by the ache down to your literal bones from using EiBiT on yourself. It wasn’t your body (albeit tender again) that was strained, but Everything is Bigger in Texas itself that was aching. “Guess it is like a muscle…” You say aloud absentmindedly, before continuing to shovel your 3rd bowl of stew into your mouth while thinking again about All-Might’s…and now Midoriya’s, quirk. “What moo-sle?” Angus asks you from across the table, spilling some stock onto the kitchen table, your uncle quickly coming to clean up before it drips down to the floor.

I wrote in that maybe we should have brought it to someone in particular we trusted before I could think of anyone, but now I've got an idea. Maybe Chiyo (Recovery Girl)? We've been a bit soured on how much we trust heroes, but I think we still have a high opinion of doctors. Chiyo in particular has been a valuable voice of dissent against treating these hero students as less in need of protection than any other kid, what with her pushback to Toshinori about his encouragement of Izuku's self-destructive tendencies.

Wrastling/Big moves- 'Murica names
Ninja/Subtle moves- Japanese flavoring.

I looked at the site and was fooling around with parts of "Seismic" and "Earthquake" but its not like I know how to amend things together in Japanese to capture the sense in a singular term.
There was also 'Ikebana' that is art of flower arranging and was thinking about how to make that "art of taproots" or something...

> The word Zen is derived from the Japanese pronunciation (kana: ぜん) of the Middle Chinese word 禪 (Middle Chinese: [dʑian]; pinyin: Chán), which in turn is derived from the Sanskrit word dhyāna (ध्यान),[17] which can be approximately translated as "contemplation", "absorption", or "meditative state". "You are asking me if it was the right choice? Of course it was!! You wouldn't have come to me if it wasn't the bestest!!!" You quickly type, your nimble fingers dancing over the screen and your wooden nails making you sound like a compact mechanical keyboard. Then, you slam your thumb on the backspace key, and make sure the whole message is undone. …You aren't so sure yourself. But you can't let your doubts stop you from reassuring your pal. "I think… we made a good choice, but maybe we didn’t make the *best* choice." It takes you a moment to come up with an answer you feel okay with sending back. Then you add right after, "I reckon it was the best option at the time." There’s a small pause before Shoto sends back his reply, seemingly mulling over his own thoughts too.>"Adequate. But I would loathe to get into the habit of settling on ‘good enough’. People will be counting on us as heroes.” “We're not quite heroes yet, Sugar. So give yourself some slack. You’re the victim here, remember?” You end the line with a head patting animation. He sends the same one back to let you know he gets where you’re coming from. That'd be nice right about now… “Hate to admit it, but your old man's got a point. Not like that makes <span class="mu-s">him</span> the right choice either.” You send, and sigh. <span class="mu-i">Why can't all heroes just be like how they look from the outside?</span>>“Definitely not. So what to change next time? Not that I plan to be ambushed by a villain again.” Shoto asks, going right back to critiquing himself. You drop your phone and stare at a corner of your ceiling for a second, thinking about telling him to relax, take some time to deal with the fact that he got assaulted instead of trying to improve his performance. But you can't really tell him how to process the experience. So you pick the phone back up from beside you and suggest: “I guess taking it to someone we particularly trust would have been better. But really, who’d you & Bakugo both trust like that?” You send, intending on continuing with another message about the chance no one fits the bill, but you see that Shoto answered your rhetorical question almost immediately.>“All Might" He states, getting you to delete your next text in progress. “Bakugo too?” You ask, still a bit surprised.>”He may not be as reverential, but he holds him in just as high regard as Midoriya.” You express your doubt with an oversized, chin holding, thinking emoji. With a stetson on, of course.>"Everybody trusts him, and as his students, we do have the opportunity to reach and confide in him directly.” Shoto asserts. "We would have had to wait a few days, however." You roll over and drop your face into your pillow. "At least, before this afternoon.” You mutter into it, your words muffled. It's not something you'd send over text. It feels <span class="mu-i">wrong</span> to doubt All Might, but you can no longer say you just fully trust him. Nor Midoriya, for that matter.

Sure, he’s not exactly first in line for who you'd be calling to babysit Angus or anything like that. But it’s got to count for something, right? It's major progress that you didn’t have to knock some sense into him... again! Speaking of knock outs… “Well, if you’re already set on bringing it to school, then what about Recovery Girl? She looks out for us too…more than even the rest of U.A., in some ways. Like when she handled things for me with Pony’s gift?” You ask your friend. You thought about asking about his thoughts on going to Mr. Aizawa as well. But, despite liking him as a teacher, the ‘logical ruses’ you all have been exposed to make it somewhat hard to know what to expect from him, especially on personal matters.>“I wouldn't mind. But I don’t see Bakugo agreeing to that without starting an argument. Or worse." Shoto replies. "It wouldn't have been that different from what happened at your doorstep, now that I think about it." "You don’t think he would have blown your arms off to keep All Might, of all people, from seeing what’s on the camera?” You sassily add. To be fair to Bakugo, had you been in their situation instead, you don’t think the camera would have survived that long. The assassin would have needed surgery to remove the crumpled remains of the device out of the back of his throat after you were done with it.>“I think we'd both trust him to manage it. Whatever his chosen method may be.” “Makes sense to me. I'll put All Might at the top of my list for when this sort of thing happens again." You snark and hope it’s obvious enough over text. "Better yet, like you said, let’s not get into any more scuffles with villains and *not* find out.">"We may not get to make that choice.” “Don’t remind me ( ̄^ ̄)” You share your exasperation.>“They are keeping us in the dark to try and protect us from this threat. It may be that the only way we're going to learn more about it is by showing All Might that we can protect ourselves. “Maybe…but that sounds a whole lot like ‘we have to train even harder’, and we're not even twelve hours into break!! (>﹏<)” You groan inwardly.>“Easier than trying to coerce him, I think. Would you rather give up, sit back, and let events unfold, then?” “Please, Sugar, of-fucking-course not.” You answer, chuckling. You chat a little bit more after that, a simple reminder that you were, at most times, just a few button presses away from each other. That comfort is nice to hold onto as you drift into sleep.

Present Mic !!hULks113dxn ID:fw3aDlPe Sat 05 Oct 2024 04:31:15 No. 6116980 Report The next morning… You snuggle in your cozy bed for a little while. You’ve earned it. <span class="mu-i">After that</span>, you settle on what you think is the best way you could make Momma feel better about you going out again. It's hard to blame her for worrying, after two villain attacks too many. But there’s no way around it, you have to complete the shopping you were supposed to get done on Saturday. And the solution you came up with was to invite her to accompany you, just like all those months ago before you had even been accepted into U.A.. Except this time around, it's not just you two anymore. And you’re not even talking about the police car that stalks you all the way back to the Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall. Tin also tags along, peeking his tail out from your rucksack as you peruse the stores and making sure to watch your back at your Momma’s behest. As for Angus and Rik, Momma set them to trying out a routine for taking care of themselves and the house for the day. A sort of ‘dry run’ for when you two are away at I-Island next week. Things don’t start great at ‘Wookiees’. Momma, fearful for your safety, peeks around corners, eyes passersby with suspicion, and rushes to put herself between you and approaching salespeople. Sometimes with a stomp. She's generally successful unnerving just about everyone within viewing distance of her to some degree. Considering how many people can see her at over 9 feet tall in an open-air mall, it was a humiliating amount. You were <span class="mu-i">this</span> close to tying a bandana up around your face to hide your embarrassment. But you realize between that, the red-eyed robot claw peeking up over your shoulder every so often, and the ‘muscle’ running interference for you, you wouldn't give off the best first impression. Even when you avoided looking like you were about to rob the place, some cashiers still acted like they got the impression that Momma was itching to shake them down. On the brighter side, you were 100% sure that the tailor that took your measurements didn't linger even one second longer than necessary. Poor guy was already pale when you first asked him for some fitted shirts. By the time you gave him your address to have them mailed, he looked almost as sickly as Shigaraki did on the weekend. Thanks to Momma’s glowering, he never got half as handsy as the villain did, despite it being his profession. Fortunately, with a little time and a timely visit to the food court, you were able to soothe Momma’s nerves back down to something resembling typical helicopter parenting. In the exact same way as last time too: The largest vanilla cone you could purchase, with enough whip cream to hide any hint of the actual ice cream underneath. Outside of maybe yourself and Momo on a particularly intense quirk practice day, you can’t think of anyone else who’d also be capable of treating a cone with a size measured in liters (Who does that?) like an average sundae. Momma is awesome like that.

Something not as awesome but still fairly cool, in your opinion, was her calming down enough to allow you to try out and choose a swimsuit for yourself without her trying to join you in the dressing room. She even took a few minutes away from her routine of knocking on the door to make sure you were still alive to go and buy something by herself. Oddly, she wouldn’t share with you what it was. “If it's a surprise, Ah've already hit mah quota for the summer…" You warn her, watching her hug a bag close to herself.>“Oh it's a surprise alright. Just not for you, hun~” Momma cheerfully answers, her tail swishing with gusto. You were also expecting some judgemental words, regardless of which swimsuit you bought, but none came. Instead she just asked to see it after leaving the store.>"It'll hold, and I reckon that's the most important thing." Momma assured you, and maybe also herself, as she pulled aggressively on the shoulder straps. It tensed with a loud <span class="mu-s">twang</span>, but neither the fabric and strap showed signs of separating. "Or second, rather." You quickly snatch the top back and shove it into your rucksack. Tin can deal with organizing it with the rest. "What's the first, then?" You ask, a bit of heat running through your cheeks. It's cute and you think it'll suit you well, but you'd rather not have it stretched nor waved around.>"Why, that you like it, of course!" Your mother chuckles for a few seconds before ending in a sigh. "As long as you are comfortable with the suit and with yourself, no one else's opinion should matter. Unless there's someone you are trying to impress?~" "Moooom!" You playfully whine, getting her to ruffle your hair just between the horns.>"Fine, fine… I'm just happy to be here to see you doing normal girl stuff." She relents, dragging her fingers through the haybale-like mass of tangles you call your hair. "And to mess with you a bit, of course. Just enjoy the free time you’ve got, it doesn't seem like you'll get all that much of it." "Ominous much? We just started our break." You raise an eyebrow and give a forced frown.>"Hmm? You wanted to study at a top school, and now you are at the best there is. You've got a few years of burning your eyebrows in your near future, hun." She elaborates. "I'm just telling you to have fun with your pals while you can. Make memories that you'll look back on, and all that stuff." "Oh. That I'll do. <Promise>!" You reply, striking a mock salute. As little time as you may get to spend having fun with your friends, you plan to make the most of it. Same goes for your Mom. Some personal time with just her has also felt sparse lately. Today went a long way towards remedying that, and not just because it was more shopping. It felt safe. No tests of strength, will, or whether or not you’ve got your head on straight. Today, you just got to be Momma’s little calf and be cared for.

Present Mic !!hULks113dxn ID:fw3aDlPe Sat 05 Oct 2024 04:33:26 No. 6116983 Report The next morning, you are back to your usual routine, jumping out of bed at the break of dawn. Yesterday was the small respite you needed to attack the day’s events head on! And ensure doing them on a full stomach. You take your time and make a large breakfast of eggs, bacon and toast for yourself while stowing away the leftovers for everyone else to wake up to. You’ll be needing it. You don’t see much of a chance to sit down for a meal for the rest of the day. Fortunately the least intensive part comes first: Your Motorcycle License test! Boy howdy was it the opposite of intense. Also somewhat annoying. You had to insist that you were at the Center to take the test, not just enroll in a riding course. Once they verified you were able to with a whole slew of identifying materials (Ugh, paperwork) you had at ready, you were finally able to start the written portion. From there, it was easy going. The practice definitely helped, but in comparison to the exams for U.A., anything more mundane, even if pretty strict by U.S. standards, barely even registers on your radar of ‘things to be anxious about’. Which really only exacerbated how boring you found the whole thing. You thought you might impress the examiners with having your own 400cc bike ready for the practical test or immediately proving your ability to lift it (no quirk involved!), but they barely even acknowledged your trick of pulling it out from behind a lamp post. Oh well. Four hours later, you bid the Japanese equivalent of the DMV farewell…with a classic double bird-flip reserved for bureaucratic nuisance, and ride back home to quickly change outfits. It was a slog, but it's finally done! You have your provisional ‘chuugata’ license! Now you can travel around Japan all by yourself without needing a train or Momma to drive you! As long as you avoid the expressways! No passengers for a year, and no driving manual bikes either. One of those the NPA will never catch you doing. As for the other, you don’t think it will ever really matter. Your bike's automatic, after all. After a congratulatory hug from Momma that lifted you off the ground, (and Angus, you hug him right back in thanks for the help) she makes you promise that you will have Tin with you any time you were riding. Which is fine with you, as you were already planning on bringing it along, to give directions while you got used to the local roads, and as company. Which is exactly what you do while traveling back to U.A. for your second big event of the day: Sunbathing at the Swimming pool with the Gals! You take your time and take in the route and the surrounding landmarks for what will be your daily journey when the next school term starts. Mid-day in the middle of the week turned out to be just about the perfect conditions for a first time ride through Musutafu to get your bearings.

As you crest the hill on which the main entrance of the school is located, you don’t notice anyone about. Makes sense. No more ‘normal’ school until next term. And your classmates who signed up for the ‘volunteer’ course for the day would’ve entered the campus earlier…and likely finished the class by now, you reckon. But when it comes time to pass the threshold yourself, there’s a bit of a snag: U.A.’s gate won’t open. You try every little thing to make the security system recognize you. You bring out your school ID/lanyard for a clean read of it not obscured by your apparel, you re-approach the gate with your helmet off, you scoot your Motorbike out of view and walk towards it. You even try holding up Tin over your head who in turn holds up your ID in its tail, picture side up, to where you think the closest sensor clusters are installed. Nothing. The barricade won’t come down. What’s really strange about it is, in all your attempts, the klaxon doesn’t blare nor do the overhead red lights go off, like it should for someone denied entry. The UA barrier lies still and shut. You could always just use Everything is Bigger in Texas to just hop over the wall. But from the aftermaths you witnessed of reporters trying to sneak in during the school year, you’re pretty damn sure that wouldn’t end well for you at all. Better to just escalate things one degree and avoid bringing the whole security system down upon your head...for now. “<Helloooo?>” You holler, banging your fist on the metal barricade that bars your way. That finally does something. With a few mechanical <span class="mu-s">clink</span>s and <span class="mu-s">whirrr</span>s, a panel contracts from the gates underside. A camera, revolving around to point down at you, juts out in its place. “Oh heeeey….” You rack your mind trying to remember the gate bot’s full designation but it escapes you for the moment. Better just do the first part that you do recall. “KT1078, buddy… KT…<Katie!> How's it going Katie?...You don’t mind me calling you Katie, right?” You ask, trying to strike some sort of dialogue. "Nice hat. Makes you look official. Ah had one too. It… was sort of trampled.">"Mistress. You are rambling." Tin informs you, cradled in your arms like the world's most angular cat. The bot’s only (non)response was to keep staring at you, just like it always does when you notice it outside of its enclosure when heading in or out of school. At least it's still not trying to kick you out, so it could be worse.

Since we’ve got some time before the next update, I figure now’s a good time to bring up: I have another jutsu idea. Really, it’s mostly a new application of of our Substit-Ushi jutsu. See, if we shrink out of our clothes, and then grow back into our hero suit, we can use the obscuring mist of Substit-Ushi to maintain our modesty, thus effectively creating a quick-change jutsu. I realized the significance of this while watching that one filler episode where all of class 1-A responds to a villain attack drill by just sort of jogging to the locker rooms and getting changed (in what seemed like a few minutes?) and then jogging back. A real villain wouldn’t wait for you to get ready, and seconds are lives in an emergency. So it would behoove us to be able to change into our hero gear (which we can keep shrunk in our wallet once we’re licensed) at any moment’s notice. In fact, all the villain attacks happening when we least expect it should really signal to Ushi the importance. Of course, this is probably going to realistically mean a lifestyle change where Ushi only ever wears sports bras, but I think that’s a fine enough price to pay. Plus, having a quick change is a time-honored superhero tradition, stretching all the way back from Superman in the telephone booth to Tony Stark and his nanotech. It’s just playing the classics, really. As far as the ninja tradition goes, I think the move would most resemble that trick Kin’emon does in One Piece, which in turn is directly inspired by the transformation powers of the Tanuki. Tanuki are able to turn leaves and sticks into clothes (among other things), and Ushi’s like 10% sticks by volume so I think she can borrow some nature-power symbolism. Since we’re going to be moving through the school locker rooms and getting changed into our swimsuit in a minute here, I figure that it’d be as good a chance as any to try it out. Personally, I’ve only thought of the name “Quick-Change Jutsu” so far, but that’s not loaded with as much symbolism as I’d normally like.

>>6119760 I like the idea: maybe call it “Kasumi henshin“ (for short, kasumihen- either I think would mean “mist change”).
If all else fails, we could just shrink a bunch of normal clothes to avoid any future wardrobe malfunctions. If we wanted to be funny, we keep a shrunk down folding changing screen on us

>>6119760 Putting away concerns of side-effects of Substit-Ushi will have if exacerbated (I think in this case, that wouldn't really apply anyways. It would only be just as strenuous as that base technique), I have had very very similar ideas to that.
I see it as a fun gag and a kinda-sorta a send up to the magical girl genre trope. Which ya, likely has its own equivalent ties to the original Superman phone booth change as inspiration.
Also, it strikes as a rather Mirio-esque technique that could cause similar wardrobe malfunctions as his...which is Ushi's schtick already so that fits like a glove.
Just leave it as "Quick-Change". I'd rather not everything be a fucking jutsu. This ain't Naruto.
And thinking on it in the context of the MHA setting, it would be surprisingly novel considering all the heros seem to go out the door already in their costumes rather than suddenly needing to change into them.
Of course its a hero-license world vs one of vigilantism.

Clearly, something's wrong. This is your school, Momo and the Gals got permission to use the pool for everyone… presumably, and it's not even close to closing hours. So why, exactly, can't you go in and join them? You've walked past KT1078's gate almost daily, and as far as you are aware, U.A. doesn't monitor how you get to the gates, so it wouldn’t be the route nor your bike… It must be something you did, or something on the school's side. "Tin, can you ask KT what's wrong? Or check on the school's network? Ah just wanna know what Ah should be complying with." You ask your robotic companion as you set it down in your lap.>“Yes, Mistress." Tin replies, unmoving. But you trust Tin to get things done without setting off any alarms. And expect it to be polite while doing so. Tin looks up at KT1078, locking its cameras with the one pointed down at you. Especially since you figure it's all a wireless exchange of data anyway.>"There are no new notices, announcements, or evident surface-level system changes since last access." Tin announces. It's clear to you that the bottleneck in its efforts is having to vocalize the results afterwards. Not that Tin seems to mind or anything. “How about permission for the pool? Unless you threaten it, the security system as a whole does not like that." "Uh. Noted." You have to admit, you were kind of tempted to shake a fist and then some at the robotic, unblinking eye.

>"Should I probe for a gap in the network’s security to access its feed? I would be able to ‘yell’ at it in a way it could ‘hear’, on your behalf, if you’d like, Mistress." Tin comments, its soft voice belying the fact it just offered to hack into your school just so you could chastise a camera. “That’s not necessary, Sugah…Is there any way to check what <span class="mu-i">is</span> currently being logged to the Intranet?... Ya! That way we can try and figure out who Katie and the security system thinks Ah am instead!” You exclaim, once again lifting Tin over your head, closer to the ever staring KT1078. Your excitement at what you think is a breakthrough in this whole problem quickly evaporates. You didn’t expect for Tin to pause and look about as if unsure, but you guess there's plenty of time for all sorts of firsts when you have a robot as a pal. “Tin? You okay bud?” You ask after another moment, suddenly worried you asked too much of it. You also try recalling what the equivalent of Control-Shift-Escape for it would be. Does Mei live anywhere nearby?>“I am sorry for my lack of immediate response, Mistress, I have just now determined the correct access point that provides logging from the R.S.A. Network to U.A.’s Intranet to verify student and faculty credentials. I would have not been aware of it if not for my prior access, but I had to… remember it, to make the correct query from the Intranet side.” “Good job! That sounds promising!” Your excitement returns in earnest.>“I agree. I have now also determined what entries in the logs correlate with the feed from KT1078." “Great! What’s it saying! Or-er…who is it seeing? Either question really.”>“The latest logs indicate continuous entry requests made by user ‘walker_U’ with positive secondary verification via direct visual input.” “<...You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me>.” You mutter. Just what are these machines seeing that is making you out to be not-you? And who the hell let it make that call!? Did you mess up your height or something in your sleep? You have not needed training gloves in years! If it was your horn it would have happened way sooner… Your shoulders do feel a bit tense under the straps…perhaps…>"Discrepancy found." Tin suddenly announces, its body going slightly more stiff, prompting you to bring it back to eye level, holding it like a particularly angular cat. "Ah knew you'd get it! What was it!? How do we fix it!?" You ask, all your tension dissipating in seconds. "Tell me!">"Your ID and or your ID. We cannot. I have just done so." Tin answers your questions in order. Nevermind, the tension returns in force.

Present Mic !!hULks113dxn ID:pak+ix8H Thu 24 Oct 2024 05:33:48 No. 6128420 Report "Mind clarifyin’?" You say, trying to keep your frustration from seeping into your voice too much. It'd be pointlessly mean to Tin.>"The system compares Student IDs and Guest IDs with governmental databases as a security measure." Tin does as requested. “The governmental database iteration has been updated with your license. U.A. systems do not have a record of this yet.” "It had to be the government…">"In case of discrepancy, permission is withheld until a System Administrator manually approves the ID or the databases are synchronized." Tin continues. “Really? Ah couldn’t have been the first sixteen year old student to go get their license…”>"Querying." Tin replies, taking it as a serious question. "Correct. You are not the first freshman this year to acquire a license." "Well, damn." For some reason, that factoid takes a bit of the air out of your sails. Alas, nothing to do about your slighted pride. You shake your head and ask, “When does that happen? Why hasn't it happened yet?”>“System changes and updates are addressed prior to first entries on to the premises each day. This occurs typically between 4:00 and 5:00 AM in a mostly automated manner." Tin's explanation is as good as can be, yet it's hard to be satisfied by it. "Normally, a System Administrator is notified to address discrepancies manually during active school hours." You wait for it to continue. When it doesn't, you prompt it to. "...But?">"You are still locked out, despite KT1078 constantly hitting the rate limit for System Administrator calls." Tin re-reveals to you. "So there must not be a System Administrator available." "Thanks, bud. You too Katy. Thanks for trying…" You sigh and let your head drop. You now know what the issue is, and that it'd fix itself by tomorrow… But you have places to be and Gals to meet. <span class="mu-i">Right now.</span> And you refuse to stare down at a problem and do nothing about it! You sit back down, hugging Tin again, and think.>What do you do? >[Wait! This time it makes sense to. You aren’t NOT allowed on campus, you just need to bide your time for someone else to force the gate open for you. “Just gotta hope people are still comin' 'n' goin'..."] >[Call someone (Who? The Gals are likely working on their tans or splashing around by now…)! "Come on, pick up, pick up, pickup!!"] >[Ask Tin! It has got you this far, maybe it has some ideas. "Tin, buddy, got any ideas?"] >[Screw it! It all ain’t worth the hassle. Ride around town, head home, and prepare for practice later at the Tigers’ Den Dojo. "Let’s go Tin, we’ll go make our own fun. With big cats! And martial arts!”] >[Write In.]

>>6128420 >Show KT1078 your driver’s license. Maybe between it and Tin, we can resolve the discrepancy? >”KT hon’, you record what’s outside the gate, right? Can you record that user Walker_U, standin’ outside the gate, has this thing? Preff’rably on mah student ID file? Maybe send it to the admin? It’d sure be nice ifn’ you can read lips…” If that fails:
>You’re realizing now just how little you know about your own sidekick. Maybe while you wait for an admin to get KT’s pings, or anyone else to show up, you can chat with Tin? Ostensibly we can *make* somebody show up if we just flag ourselves as a threat but, uh, I foresee that creating additional problems, a thing of which Ushi already has enough.
Also, that Jeju art ITS JUST A BABY. We need to get Tin to stop calling us “mistress” first. I think it ought to call us Ushi, or LoanStar when we’re in costume. Conversely, we should get Tin a hero name. I know what I would choose.

>>6128434 >we should get Tin a hero name. It's probably already taken but "Big Iron", sort of fits the theme we've got going.

>>6128464 I thought about that, but I prefer Babbitti.
Regarding Big Iron, it’s very cowboy for sure, and I know Tin’s main weapons are those belt-feds, but just thematically I prefer to think of Tin as primarily a shield, rather than a gun. Not only does that gel with Tin’s whole deal better (its prime directive is to protect a child, not to fight evil, plus saving everyone is what it learned from Ushi) but Tin’s defining feature technologically speaking is the super tough ceramic composite metamaterial that can only exist in such quantities because of Everything’s Bigger in Texas.
Moreover, I think we’re imposing enough to villains by virtue of the Law of Gross Tonnage, so I’d rather focus on inspiring a sense of safety in the innocent.
To that end, the hero name I’d pick for Tin is Babbitti. Babbitt is an American-invented tin-containing alloy which is a White Metal. Tacking the extra -i on the end makes the name also contain “ti”, which is both is a part of Tin’s name, but also is reminiscent of the TI-series of calculators. The TI in the calculators stands for, of course, Texas Instruments, which is cool enough for me to want to spell it BabbitTI or BABBITTI or Babbit-ti, maybe. Babbitti also sounds a lot like rabbity, which is how I would describe Tin’s head with its elongated shape, white coloration, and big expressive ear-like antennae. Which also helps it be cutesy enough to help instill a sense of friendliness to small children, which might be predisposed to be scared of a giant robot with glowing red eyes and a clawed tentacle and big guns.

I just don't think it takes asking as a valid input. And it looks like it would be amicable to it too, considering its effort to get Ushi in thus far.
Supporting >Chatting with Tin
I'd prefer if Ushi be just be 'Ma'am'.
As for a Hero name, Tin itself should be the one to decide that, in my opinion.
>>6128602 The Intranet should have some way of contact. Not sure if it would go to their desk phone(?), their personal number, or reroute the former to the latter.
Calling is totally valid in a few different ways in this situation, I just like Ushi taking care of her problems herself, even if it does mean a little bit of white hatting to make it happen. Gray-hatting if we reach out to Mei instead, but its a tossup if she answers in the midst of whatever she's got going on at home...
Which i guess would be some level of preparation for I-Island iirc.
Didn't see any landlines in these views of the faculty lounge in the anime, if that is what it is(pic).

Also for the Tin Name Discussion, if Tin doesn't (or can't) make up a name himself, I have some suggestions:
-Tin Star
-Tin Badge
-
The Iron Giant Throwing my hat in also to have Tin just call Ushi "Miss" at least, if not the other ideas people have said (Loanstar when in costume, Ushi/Ma'am when not in costume).

Basically, the system is saying “how can we be certain this is Walker Ushi? The official Walker Ushi has a driver’s license, but I’ve never seen this Walker Ushi’s driver’s license myself, so how can I be sure this is the official Walker Ushi?”

Worst case scenario if nobody picks up the phone- we could have Tin distract Katie and we just hop the fence with our own athletic ability.

>>6133755 KT is networked- we’d have to evade every other camera on the premises as well. Furthermore, a robot’s mental wellbeing is linked directly to how well it assesses it is fulfilling its function. Let’s not give the nice doorman, who’s really trying their best for us, a crisis of self-esteem. I’d also like to keep Tin’s relations to other bots collaborative.

>>6133767 Fair point. Only other idea I got is hinging on if UA has any incoming deliveries on this day. Ushi shrinks herself and hides in some Japan Fedex box that's going into the building.

>>6134358 Wait- I just realized a better idea: Is Tin cleared to go into UA by himself? we grow him up enough to then shrink Ushi to hide within a compartment of his and we trojan horse this.

>>6134360 That presents the same issue as if we snuck in while KT was distracted- as soon as any camera within saw us, we’d be flagged as a person who is in UA without having been greenlit for entrance to UA through the UA barrier.
If Tin is allowed in anyways, on merit of being an “object” and not a person who needs IDing, we may as well have it go in to ask a faculty member for help waking/finding/substituting the admin, or granting us entrance by daypass or something.
Hopefully that’s apparent enough that Tin will think of it even if Ushi doesn’t.
