I- Princess Cora of house Maria of the fallen empire of Histresmos, had lost everything I known and own, reduced to just 20 warriors running out of food in the mountains and resorted to petty banditry, trying to only take what is needed, had come to a strange town that suddenly come to existence, Maple Hills, a foreign name for a equally foreign place, full of strange, gray metals, ivory like soft material of all colors, glass so clear that kings would sell entire herds of cattle to buy a single plane cup of cast aside like so much broken pottery, surrounded by cliffs cut completely smooth down to the dirt by whatever act of god or magic that brought this land here.
In my attempt to find out who these people are- me and 4 of my warriors got discovered, and managed to find someone who we could talk to.

Both the green man and the official look at each-other, with the green man smiling as he says something that reminds untranslated, then Fredrick speaks with Jeremiah translating.

The man in green grab a stick and brake it to a length- indicating how long, no swards or spears- but we may use and keep our knives.

There’s some pause following with a conversation between Jerimaia and Quietus
Quietus speaks; ‘’I think he is trying to say a few moments, 10 or 15 moments but- I don’t remember anyone measuring moments like such’’

Behind the officer’s seat is a pocket with some square thing in it- the Princess grabs it and see a gilded symbol on it- the same as the holy man, on a leather cover, and covered in the written language of these people. She opens it and finds hundreds of thin, luxurious, sheets of some kind of papyrus, finer than the ones used by even the Pharos of the Nile, each neatly covered in the language of these people and even including some finely done maps, but not of Lands she recognizes. *
After a few moments, they arrive to the red building as the big yellow carts are moving around- several bringing in people by the dozens to this building- while the parked carts spill out into the black road and the grass fields. *
As the group is led inside- the people of this town keep looking at them- some holding out some kind of trinket with a wide-flat face pointed at them. One of the things the Princess noticed is how nearly everyone look well fed at minimum, most in colorful outfits, many with images on them as if they were painted.
Inside is full of people, brightly lit by strange torches that hang from the ceiling, tho while everyone is heading to one room- the princess and others are directed to a different room…

A carpeted room full of shelves containing more of those bundles of parchments, shelves after shelf of them, many with more intricate images painted on them, one entire wall is covered in the same pure and clear glass that had been found tossed aside, a table is set up with warm food, sitting there is a additional man, older than both the green man and the official, with a golden bracelet with a thick, round, decoration with a clear glass cover. Pale like most people of this land, with thinning white hair, and wearing a black multi-part outfit with a white undershirt.
Everyone sits down.

The 3 men talk in there tong for a bit as the princess and her men enjoy the provided food, a strange sandwich made uniformly with a ground up disk of cooked beef in the middle, and small cups of tick, white soup in a sealed container of foreign, soft material.

Me, Dan, and Smith are all the only ones seeking to be, chosen, as the next leader among us, but none the less all of us would want to propose hiring you as part of our first action, we can’t promise what form payment will come in, but we need a guide, and more warriors’’

It’s been a long day, it started when the big wigs in Seattle sent me 4 big trucks full of food to my warehouse when I was full, then- the sky glowed and the power cut out. If it wasn’t for Lieutenant Dan and Officer Smith, we all probably would had done something incredibly stupid. Now- we are all crammed into a brand new gym of a old school that should have been torn down and replaced, and walk in is 4 strange people everyone been talking about, dressed in simple toga-like cloths with leather and Sparta-like bronze armor over them, 3 of them actually look like they could be greek but the 4th, light green with a 2-fang underbite, look like he could be cosplaying as a Ork or something, leading them to there seats is the lady of the group, tho average high to us- she is taller than the other men of her group, with tanned olive skin, short hair cut in a pixi cut done by someone who never cut hair before, roomer is that she is a princess of some kingdom, a fact that would be surprising if it wasn’t for the fact that there’s 2 moons and the tast of salt in the air, but word as also that she tried to brake into the power plant for some reason, why is she here and not in a jail cell along with the idiots that decided that the end of the world was a good time to rob the pawn shop?
The talking, murmers, and even wispers stop as Officer Smith walks in with that corporate stooge Mr Anderson from Walmart, and Lt Dan, when the call went out to who want to run for interim mayor as it turned out he was in Charleston when the world became brighter.

During the cheers from some I cannot help but think- If he wins I feel bad for the poor fools who’ll be the first to find out what we can do- I don’t know if I should feel confident, or disturbed.

There’s people in those mountains who are suffering, lost, and desperate, who will likely be willing to sell themselves for far less than what we can offer here and at a steeper price than we would ever consider. We will need to grow our own food and we need people to do that, both ourselves and those willing to become American, and if we get pass that- we can start the American Revolution in this time of swards and sorcery’’

- A 75 room tavern that was ran by a large merchant family of some sort, the family defaulted on its dues and abandoned the building shortly before the glow. Already the town had claimed many items but left the beds behind.
- A indoor bazaar that use to sell cheap goods for the presents, the back room is still full of random goods and the shelves that would be given to the princess as part of the first payment, it have space to divide up and to modify, even to build to be 2 story high on the inside, but any beds would be those donated by the town, brought in by the blades, or bought and heating would be a issue.
As for the first mission- the town need to contact the surrounding areas, and currently is securing the depopulated coastline for farmland that they are rapidly turning into fields. After 2 weeks in a crash course of English several of the more diplomatic blades will be sent out with American diplomats. The princess gets to pick where she go first;
- Kass; the artisans are interested in the tin and copper mine that had flooded half a decade ago, as well as whatever other metals that can be had, they are threaten by bandits so a group of warriors including private Jacobs will be part of the party.
- The Free Islands; namely it’s biggest member island of Atlantis, but due to the lack of sutiable boats the Princess can only take one other blade with her, with Private Jacobs coming along for her gun.
- New Heliax: Smith had openly voiced he’s disgust at bondage, but the town is between 2 kingdoms. The lord of Heliax is a old general of her father- it might help- it might hurt- but there’s no way to know but form what she knows- the kingdom still follow her court edicts.
- Sar-Ron; both Smith and Dan are quite worried about this kingdom. They seem unbelieving that Sar-Ron can use magic but instead thinks that he knows how to make a special powder the Americans used for there weapons, tho they are mainly worried about the claims of insanity.
- Bronze Keep; they are the biggest bandits in the area, Dan wanted to just ‘’Napalm’’ them but Smith wants to give them a chance to leave first, worried about the cost to he’s own people, This one will have the biggest military support- with the artisans planning on making some siege engines and other weapons.
Whatever blades not heading out on these missions will be ordered by the Princess to;
- help with the farming crisis, this will likely help to improve the people’s opinion of the blades.
- Learn as much as they can about the arts and magics of these people, Quietus is noteworthy as being curious of the faith of these people and of its written language.
- Help with the lawmen and guardsmen, Thorax stated that this might make some turn more loyal to the Americans than the Princess.

Well we did just kill the Dracon without Jacobs or them managing to damage it at all lol. I'd say the spoils are ours. Might be nice to make some Dracon leather armors, use the bones for whatever. Cook the meat for a nice little feast.

The princess looks at a mirror, not happy with what had to be done.

The school had gone back to teaching- that the Princess dose get, normality is critical in times of crisis, even if it’s only slightly normal, half of the cafeteria is set aside for the blades as they eat after finishing getting nearly boiled by the Amerikan attached bathhouse and given new cloths as there old ones are ‘’cleansed’’. Lots of clothing with painted images, most donated by the various people of this town, they even gave them grooming supplies and the children toys.
‘’Frankly I would stay shaven for food like this’’ says Perkus- who look quite different without he’s beard and long red hair, as he eats the short yellow noodles in cheese.
The ‘’feast’’ is quite modest in volume if luxurious in quality- with different nuts, cheeses, spices, and breads, not to mention a small pile of exotic treats sealed in packages.
As the last of the blades sit down for the bounty, the Princess steps on one of the table- wearing the cloths of these strange people, and drinking a warm bitter black drink of these people. ‘’Alright Blades, today- today is a great day- and the first of many- no more, will we need to steal for food, no more, we will need to scrape by, we have found our perch, but our fate is now tied to the fate of these people, they had graced us with a home, a veritable palace, with luxurious thick beds, egnoft for more than twice our number. But there’s a price to this- we must help these people, so for the next 14 days I order you all to try to learn English and the customs of these people, and when not learning- help these people with setting up there farms, at the end of these days- the best will be tied with groups to contact the surrounding communities and kingdoms. - A leather jacket, made in the style of the Amerikan biker, a kind of semi nomadic warriors that rode their 2 wheel carts into battle. The back will be decorated in the new symbol of the Blades, a deacon head with 2 swards behind it. (+1 health when out of armor, +1 intimidation, other blades will adopt Biker-like attire over time)
- Leather Boots, made in the style of a Amerikan rancher, wealthy herdsmen of cattle form the great land of Texas. (+1 agility, plus 1 bartering, over time the Blades will adopt more western style outfits)
- Leather Armor, of a novel style- the Amerikans lack a culture of leather armor, so this is based off of a game they play called ‘’dungeons and dragons’’, evidently there’s a peasant theater tradition of dressing up as mythical characters. (+3 health in armor)
Role a 8D20 to see how well the blades learn English and American concepts. (First 4, English, 2nd 4, concepts). A nat one on English means that group of blades can barter for goods and that’s it’s, a nat one on Concepts means that there will be fundamental misunderstandings that would come up later.

Just about all of the royal craftsmen was killed, captured, or left for better prospects, there are those able to work leather but it’s on a basic level, there’s a few with other skills but most are either warriors or skilled in domestic affairs (tho are valuable in teaching the people of Mable Hills how to do without modern tools)

The princess hitch a ride on a pickup truck taking workers to the fresh fields being made around the 2 big boxy buildings, a area the locals began to call ‘Twinbox’.
The pickup truck stops at a formerly abandoned store next to the Walmart, it’s shelves hauled away to the machine shops to make room for a mismatch of bunk-beds for those who work in the area. Currently the Amazon parking lot is home to a small baggage train of mules and some horses that is preparing for the trip.
Among them is the security detail 10 blades, 5 Militiamen, and a single Guardsman, as well as a collection of 5 experts to look for important resources for the town.
Lena Jacobs, who had recovered from the Dracon bite, is making the final checks….

the route to Kass takes the caravan through mountain passes that been built up over generations, with spots cleared and dug to allow for groups to camp during the 2 day trek.
On the morning of the 3rd day the convoy reaches the hilly plateau in the middle of the mountains, the arrival of the convoy is met by a horsemen in a bronze helmet and leather armor rushing up to them-
‘’HALT!’’ Yell the man in Heliax, bringing the Convoy to a standstill ‘’what is your intentions?’’
The Princess steps forward and respond

The walled town of Kass, a town built to hold 1000 people is home to about twice that, approaching the small city Cora is reminded of how abnormally clean Maple Hill was.

Inside the small city the smells is more pronounced.

The town itself is definitely pass it’s glory- something that the West Virginias easily recognize. Expensive and cracked clay roof tiles lay mixed in with makeshift thatch and poor clay repairs, faded stripes of expensive dyes of paint broken up by patchwork on the walls of the buildings, the only reason why there’s no abandoned homes is because of the demand for safe space when the farmers of the felids and miners of what little can be dragged up from the flooded mine are not working.
The great palace itself lay diminished, pedestals where great bronze statues use to be proudly presented now lay bare, exotic pottery from far off land long gone or desperately glued together, Cora is able to recognize that the modest palace use to have a additional wing and a additional story, likely blemishes that was concealed as opposed to fixed, now the mostly stone and plaster building is about as large as a large American home, and likely crowded by the family of the Lord of Kass.

- A pickax, oil lantern helmet, a scale model of a miners cart, and a working scale model of the same water pump that is now outside the gates.
- A set of carpentry tools including hand drills, clamps, and an engraving kit.
- A set of pottery tools with a foot powered potter wheel

They probably have many of these things in some capacity, but we can make really good ones.

Speaking of coal, did the town have a coal mine as well as just a coal power plant? If so, how much of it came through? Is it all there complete with coal, or does the shaft terminate in a blank rock face?
By the way, do you have a picture or description for the Princess? Her appearance has been kinda abstract in my mind but I'm curious if you have thoughts or a reference about what she's supposed to look like.
Also, I'm guessing you read 1632 at some point.

The coal mine came with the town- it was going to be brought up later but one of the shafts went up to the edge of the Glow with the now smoothed bare-rock face being that of a even richer coal vane. The town also had a coal pile of about 5 months on the lowest setting for the coal plant, which is still overkill for the current power consumption due to supplying a single town. to the point some are arguing that they should start refining aluminum using the spare power before they had to build a newer- simpler plant.
Also- I was wondering when someone was going to bring up 1632. It’s a great series, also inspired by Island Lost in the Sea of time.
I should see if I can draw a picture of her.

There's also options available to us for steelmaking if we can import limestone and iron ore (would require a lot of new infrastructure for baking the lime, coking the coal and blasting the mixture and our local coal may not even be coking grade) as well as coal liquefaction and gasification for liquid hydrocarbons because we only got so much fuel around here (and what we do have is going to expire eventually anyway) unless we branch into ethanol and exporting electrical power later down the line if we manage to sell some other people on the idea of captive lightning. I am concerned for the electrical plant in the long run though since we hardly have the industrial capacity to maintain the machinery and may need to cannibalise its space capacity for parts to keep it running or allow it to technologically regress a hundred years by retrofitting it with simpler machines.
I believe in the business they literally call this kind of story an "ISOT plot".

- Common Currency; American golden Dollars. The town of Maple Hills had started to mint their own coins by melting down golden and silver jewelry into coins. This is a novel idea even tho the idea of sudo-standardized bars of metal had existed for centuries. Lord Kass is hesitant due to not knowing the Americans well (-2)
- Livestock breeding program; Maple Hills had started a breeding program for its livestock, and by all accounts contains exsodic livestock in the form of lamas and Algerian bunnies, and higher quality pigs, cows, and so on, this would slow the Maple Hills program but would be a boon to Lord Kass. - Joint Community Labor Program, the CLP, called Penal Labor Program by its detractors- was a controversial proposal in the town to have people who brake the law to have to preform community services, now including the preparation of land and work at the makeshift recycling center, this proposal would include Lord Kass on it. Cora can keep up with the soldiery and has clearly demonstrated some melee skill and experience earlier and can apparently wield a crossbow and sword (the latter needing some strength), so I imagine she's decently fit with a fair bit of lean muscle to her and would have received some education in statecraft, etiquette, economics etc. as a princess as well.

The Princess, Cora, is about 5,6. Tall for her people regardless, let alone for a women, as the previous years of hardship had rendered most to grow up to be between 5,3 and 5,5.
Her skin is olive colored when not tanned- tho her face is lacking in scars, her hands bares marks from both the fight to escape the fall of her home and the weeks in the wilderness.
Before she was shaven she had short loosely curly black hair, typically she worn it long but during the fight for her city she cut it short after a small band of warriors managed to get in and into the palace.
Currently she is tanned form both the wilderness and form helping in the fields, her hair growing back but not long enough for much, she is physically fit both from her father not wanting any of he’s children defenseless should the worse come to pass and from her time dethroned, and with a slim figure. Her eyes are brown and She’s 22.
Some stuff you can buy here you might be able to sell at a profit in town, Maple Hill’s makeshift budget is stretched thin- you won’t go hungry unless everyone else does also but it will be some time if lucky that they’ll be able to give you a normal wage.

Wet ash is even worse than dry ash. While rain washes it out of the air and stop you basically breathing in glass shards and choking on it, it basically turns into thick wet concrete (with the density of concrete too - an inch-thick layer of ash over a square metre of roof weighs as much as a person) that clags to everything and then hardens solid as it dries. Unconsolidated ash is also very vulnerable to becoming a mudslide or lahar if there's enough rain.

In the almost 3 weeks since the Loyal Blades had come to inhabit what is now Fort Blade, not much had change for the old hotel. Most of the rooms remained empty, tho the cafeteria had been turned into a sort of tavern by the wives of the blades.

The information gathered was as followed;
1; Hunfirth 18, human. was a warrior for a short time, enslaved into the mines after he was captured in a battle. seems to be very grateful for freedom. Willing and intelligent. He seems to believe that the gods of the Americans are stronger than that of the Heliax given the weapons and tools they have.
2; Apellinus, 30. Ex professional fighter for Italia, was enslaved to trained the city guard. He seems unaware that the Blades are led by the Princess, and had made very crass comments about Lena Jacobs when he found out she was a woman warrior. Thorax believes he is what Americans call ‘’Sexist’’, tho some of them would agree with hem- many others won’t.
3; Homullus, 23, Enslaved to mines. The man have zero combat skills, but was once a healer in training. He seems optimistic in general.
4; Tumni, 25, enslaved to clean the streets of Kass without tools after he killed a man in the mines, he insist that it was self defense. A few of the other ex-miners are in disagreement if it was or wasn’t.
5; Geta, 17, was sold into slavery as a child by pirates, Was enslaved to the palace, was already planning on running away as he was slated to become a unic.
6; Thii, 20, was enslaved to the brothel, a large woman even by American standards who was known to be able to convince clients to actually pay there dues on her own- she wish to become a warrior and use those crossbows the Americans are making.
7; Ain, 19, not a former slave but a weaver from house Kass, she left because one of Lord Kass nephews wanted her as a concubine, she is fearful of the strange Americans- and seem willing to take any role, she is not particularly strong but she is adept weaver and great cook. The women running the Tavern think they can use her help.
8: Ishaq, 28, enslaved as a general laborer, was a blacksmith but was sold into slavery over debts. He claim to be quite skilled and to know how to make a forge from scratch. He seems to not like non Helinixs- tho is willing to give the Americans ‘’a chance’’.
9: Rubi, 19, was a house slave for a merchant family, Deris noticed that he had significant scaring on he’s back. He seems to hold a anger in hem, he is very interested in American guns and crossbows. During the trip back from Kass he often helped to keep watch at night.
10: Amt, 24, wasn’t a slave but was a homeless man on Kass’ streets. Was a carpenter until alcoholism took hold. During the trip from Kass he was sleeping near the remainder of the moonshine, with none found to be missing. It was discovered he was lying about being a ex slave due to Thii recognizing hem and owing her money. He states that he wanted help to get sober, and figured that a people willing to pay to free slaves, are a people willing to help a alcoholic. He asked to join the Blades due to realizing that the Americans speak an foreign language.

2 seems too useful to not recruit even if he is sexist. Just don't take him with Lena or Thii and set him to training recruits.
If our fellows disagree with taking 4 as being too much trouble without being an actual fighter or of a skill our camp could really use thats fine.
