Q: What is this?
This is a multiplayer Madoka quest, where you get to build a wacky magical girl and fuck around in a world of my design. I’ll be taking on three players, if we get that many. If we get more, then damn, I guess we’ll have to see.

Caveat: I’m a lazy bastard who’s also very busy. Horrible combination, I know. But, because of that, this will inherently have a limit. This thread will be done in 4 weeks, come hell or high water. If we’re still actively running beyond that, someone somewhere has fucked up majorly (me). (This does not preclude the possibility of additional threads beyond.) (Also if I get busy I’ll let you guys know)

Q: How do I play?
Submit a character sheet!

Name: self-explanatory. We’re somewhere in the US, but if you wanna go full weeb regardless, that’s up to you
Characteristics: short phrases that describe your character, appearance, whatever
Wish: you get one (uno) wish for anything
Stats: we’ll get to that later

I wanted to try writing something of my own! More specifically, I had an idea for a story I wanted to try to tell, so this will have a beginning and an end (hopefully) (at some point). That being said, we might get caught up in telling your story too, which is okay! We're just here to have some fun

Magical power: Pack-leader. Sure, that one documentary mentioned that wolves sometimes kill other wolves and rarely accept others into their pack, but that’s not how true wolves do it! True wolves earn the respect of their comrades, and lead a gang despite also being loners somehow! Has the ability to accept people into her pack. Pack members must willingly join, and willingly wear the wolf-ear headbands she manifests to remain part of the pack. Has had no takers thus far.

Can also talk to dogs now. Not cats though, they’re lame.

>HOW STATS WORK
We're largely using the same stat system as an author who's gone AWOL. For those unfamiliar with how these stats work, here's how we're gonna do it
Sometimes, I'm gonna have you roll to do something. That thing you want to do will have a difficulty magnitude.
If your stat matches the difficulty's magnitude, you have a 50/50 chance of doing the thing. If the difficulty is one magnitude above, your chances of pulling it off goes down, while if the difficulty is easier, you have a larger chance of doing it.
Here's your illustrative example

Rayna has a Mind stat of 4. She's trying to do something with the following magnitudes. In order to pull it off, she'll have to beat the requirement!

Magnitude 1: Auto-success (no roll)
Magnitude 2: 20
Magnitude 3: 30
Magnitude 4: 50
Magnitude 5: 70
Magnitude 6: 80
Magnitude 7: Unreachable (no roll)

Adjust it accordingly according to your stat. If it's still flying over your head, no worries, just ask and you shall receive (information on what the DC is). Most importantly, if you think it's bullshit that making a sandwich is dexterity 7, just debate me and give some arguments why

General scale: 1- Kicking down a door, 7- Kicking down a skyscraper

At any point, you can ask to roll Wisdom to see what your character can glean about who you're talking to. Helpful in some circumstances!

In Madoka Magica, the girls have soul gems that darken whenever they use magic or feel despair. Sucks that there's no convenient percentage system in the real world! When your soul gem becomes pitch black, [REDACTED] happens. You can only check how close you are to that point by taking a glance and eyeballing it!

>HEALTH POINTS
This one does have a convenient point system. Every guca has 100 HP. When you reach 0, you can no longer fight. What constitution affects is how much damage you take!

If a magnitude 7 attack were flying at Lorene, she'd actually be rolling for the attack's potency against her constitution of 5. The roll requirement for the attack to do damage would be to beat a 20, and any in excess, she would take as damage to her hit points. Long story short, high numbers bad.

Example: Difficulty magnitude 7 constitution check. Lorene rolls 80. Lorene takes 60 points of damage.

Health passively regenerates out of combat. If you get into a second fight soon after, you're probably not gonna be at full, but maybe tomorrow you'll be better! Your soul gem, however, never regenerates. That thing will just continue to get darker and darker. The only way to cleanse it is with a Grief Seed from a Witch.

Clover blearily yawns, kicking her wolf-themed blanket off the bed and stretching her arms far above her mess of black hair, as her brother’s footsteps stomp away from her bedroom door. She’d stayed up way too late, grinding exp on Wolf Quest Online, and now the morning was way too bright.

As she mumbles and squirms around on the now-blanketless and cold bed, she realizes that waking up this early means she can grind even more! The Lycaonic Nightblade skill-tree just had three more nodes to go! With a deep breath to steel herself against the morning light, she jumped out of bed, nearly tripping on the blanket.

Clover brushes her teeth quickly, watching the awesome girl with wolf-ears (fake) and a wolf-tail (belt) in the mirror. While her instincts would have been to immediately hop onto her shitty laptop, mom always said every morning needs a brush and breakfast, and mom was always right. She just had to go quickly!

As she rushes out of her room, she notices her dad snoring on the couch, beer bottle in hand.
“Good morning, Dad!”
The man continues to snore.

The school-year was over. While she’d turned some heads at her new fashionable and elegant appearance, everyone was too busy cramming during finals week to take much notice. That was okay, however. They’d soon be begging for a scrap of her attention soon enough.

As a reward for the ugly acquaintances who’d stayed by her side these past years, she’d organized this tea party. She’d really been under no obligation to do so, she was simply that generous. She knew they were all only here for her handouts anyway, so it was time to bid farewell, and say good riddance! Next school year, she’d be moving onto greener pastures and loftier heights within the school hierarchy!

Her older sister pokes her head in, dropping off some cookies. “Are you girls all doing alright?”

“Yess!” The uglies chime in unison.

Somehow, her sister had turned out the perfect specimen- pretty, and without a hint of extra fucked-up teeth. Soon enough, however, her sister would finally be out of her hair. Her parents had organized some marriage for her across the country. Finally, she’d be able to shine!

“How about you, Hermione? Is everything going well?”

Her sister’s warm smile was like the sun, far too warm and threatening to melt everything in its vicinity from its purity. “Yes, of course, my dear sister. There is no need to be so concerned on my behalf. Everything is going smoothly.”

Her sister nods, smiling, and leaves the room.

Ugly 1 fetches the cookies for the table, and Ugly 2 begins to dig in. Hermione sips at her tea and considers her options, as the uglies chat to one another about something or other.

Lorene stares at the two outfits in front of her. She could either wear her school uniform, or wear the oversized T-shirt with her jeans. She had nothing else in her closet.

Today was Ruth’s birthday. Convenient that it was right after their finals, as it gave the three of them an excuse to celebrate and hang out. Ruth and Olivia were her friends, and the only people in the world she trusted. While she loved her parents, she wouldn’t trust them with a dime. They’d just give it away to the first person they saw.

The three friends had known each other since elementary school, therefore Lorene was certain of their character. Up to a certain extent of course, you could never believe in someone completely. Out of the two, Olivia was more reliable. Ruth was quiet, and timid, and Lorene couldn’t really trust her to overcome that fear.

Lorene slaps herself. It was horrible to think of Ruth that way. Especially on her birthday. The fatigue from killing that Witch last night must have been getting to her. She needed to ensure she didn’t become someone she hated.

Henry was too mean! She’d come up with a genius plan to punk him later. But, it was finally time to recruit some pack members!!

Clover finishes up her cereal, quickly rinses out the bowl, then speeds for the front door.
“I’m heading out, Dad!”
The man is still snoring.

The mall was actually only five or six blocks away. That might be a distance for LAME people, but for wolves, it was nothing! The girl begins her super-special wolf run on all fours, enjoying the refreshing summer breeze on her face. She lasts for the first two blocks, before her back starts hurting from traveling in ways humans were never meant to, then she begins to just normally walk. It’s a beautiful morning!

When she arrives at the mall, she heads straight for her second-favorite spot, the arcade! (Her first-favorite was the store that sold her this cool tail!) It’s a rather modern arcade, appropriate for the rather modern mall. One might expect arcades to be a relic of the past, but in recent years, they’ve actually seen quite the resurgence! Most of the arcade-goers now are young adults in their twenties, and a lot of the cool machines that took quarters have been replaced with lame air hockey tables, or bowling alleys, or the punching bag, or that one basketball game, but in the corner, like relics of the past, some old games still stand!

Basically no one is there, since it’s not even 10 am, but there are a few little kids dragging their moms around, and a few disgruntled employees. A perfect audience! Clover boots up the ancient Dance Dance Revolution machine, scrolls to her favorite song, ‘Wolf’s Rain’, and gets ready, gripping the bar behind her. She was an expert at this! The top 10 high scores on the song were all her, and she was gonna beat her old record!

Feet flying, practically floating in the air, Clover grins her widest grin possible. This was so awesome! The song even had wolf howls intermittently too! When she finally arrived at the explosive finish, she posed, threw her head back, and howled, “AWOOOOOOO!”

A few polite claps from a few of the mothers could be heard, before their kids dragged them off to wherever the next shiny dopamine-rush could be found. The bored employee just sighed at the fact that he’d have to scrub off all the scuff marks on the pad again, for the fifth time that month.

Panting (like a wolf!), Clover wipes the sweat off her forehead, and jumps away from the machine, eagerly looking around to see if anyone wanted to join her pack NOW! Unfortunately, like with most things, when the event was over, people dispersed, and her crowd of miscellaneous mothers had been dragged far away at this point.

But, you really don’t have to be.” He smiles at her. “Your mom and I are adults. We’re here to take care of you! If kids had to look after their parents, what kind of messed up world would that have to be?”

Her shitty ancient Nokia buzzes. It was probably a text from Olivia, reminding her of the fact they needed to show up early to surprise Ruth. Her father notices.

“Anyway, stop worrying so much, go enjoy the day with your friends!” He glances at the clock on the wall. “I need to head off to work soon, anyway. Remember, you get even more fun with another celebration tonight!”

“…About that. It’s just another school year, dad, we don’t need to do anything special-”

Her dad kneels down to look her in the eye, pinching her cheek. “Don’t be silly, Lorene. Of course we need to do something special, because you’re my one and only special daughter.”

He stands up, grabbing his briefcase off the table and rifling through the papers inside. He’s getting ready to leave. You have one last chance.

Hermione scoffs. “Just a tea party? Please, what kind of gathering would this be, with only these paltry snacks? No, we’re going to go shopping, as elegant young women do.”

...Ugly 2 holds the cage with her illusion, as the four of them sit in the back of the limousine.

“And so, Monsieur Rockefeller laughed. As the impoverished workers shuffled back into the textile mill, he had realized that if one were convincing enough, he could even have those idiotic peasants work for free!”

“Woooow!” The three girls clap. It had been the seventeenth time they’d heard the story, yet they always acted as if it were the first. Hermione hmphs triumphantly.

The limousine pulls to a stop. The passenger door is opened for them. “Madam, we have arrived.”

Without even bothering to respond to the chauffeur, Hermione elegantly steps out of the vehicle, closely followed by her lackeys. Her appearance is at tip-top function.

The only thing is; she’s never been to a mall before. Where are they supposed to go?

Clover has an idea! And for that idea… she’ll need some arts and crafts. She’ll get to screen for pack-members too!

She’s sorely tempted to wolf-run through the mall on all fours, but her back still kind of hurts, and she just did something really cool on the Dance Dance Revolution machine, so she has a foreboding sense it might actually fuck her up a bit. She settles for walking coolly!

Along the way, she notices a few people, a group of those mean girls from school, a random guy sitting on a bench, another girl furiously tapping at her phone, but she decides she should probably go to the craft store first! She is NOT scared of talking to people, because wolves are NEVER scared.

When she arrives at the craft store, shelves of colored pencils and paper and rulers and markers and a bunch of other cool stuff stretches out before her. The nice store lady comes up to her. “Do you need any help, missy?”

“A-awoooo!” Clover scurries into the shelves, to look for what she’s looking for.

While she could go look at the mall map, gawking at directions was for low-class peasants. A sign hung on the door, reading ‘Closed.’

Hm.
“Like, what are you looking at, Hermione?”
She’d never been in a mall before, but that didn’t really seem like it belonged… right? What kind of mall store would just be a metal door in a brick wall? Hermione thinks… then she shrugs. She couldn’t care less. The four continue walking.

Eventually, she finds a store with her family name. The only store in the mall with the family name, in fact. ‘Rockefeller Construction Services- Branch Office.’ Needless to say, the groupies are a little antsy, but they try to mask their impatience.
“Uh, can we, like, go shop for clothes? We know some really good places, Hermione!”

In the back of the arts and crafts shop, there is the little table where customers are invited to test out the sample pens and markers. Said pens and markers are tethered to the wall, but the paper isn’t, and all Clover really needs is that paper, with her scribbles on them!

First, for Henry! Clover closes her eyes and focuses, channeling all her inner hatred into the small sticky note. She focuses, and focuses, hands trembling, nearly passing out from the lack of oxygen, then… she feels it. The chains have been loosened! Her inner wolf is unleashed! “GRAAAAAH!!!”

To quickly seal all that anger and bad energy into the piece of paper, she scribbles a frowny face. There!!! That’ll show him!!! She puts it in her pocket. Clover doesn’t even consider the fact that she’ll have to be the one carrying the bad luck charm for the rest of the day.

Next up, the recruitment poster! She sneakily sneaks to the nearby printer, opening up the tray and taking out a singular piece of paper. She writes, in awesome jagged capital letters, ‘JOIN THE PACK! BE ALPHA! FREE EARS!’ Then she draws in a cool (not cute!) wolf, and adds some lightning, and also a big smiley face to be extra welcoming. There! If people just read the sign, she won’t have to talk! She tapes the piece of paper to the front of her shirt.

Finally… time to put it into action. Nice lady seemed nice. So… m-maybe she’d offer her the honor of b-being the first pack-member?
Clover approaches the employee. Deep breaths, deep breaths… let’s GO!

The clerk tilts her head. “Did you need something, dear?”

… “A-AWOOOOOOO!!!”

Clover flees the store.

As she enters the family storefront, she hears a scream from behind her. “24 KARAT??!”

She walks confidently toward the front desk, as the receptionist boredly looks up at her. The man repeats his canned lines, “How can I help you today? You seem young.”

“I, Hermione Rockefeller, demand to see the blueprints for this mall!”

The man gives her a look. “…Alright, I don’t think-” The manager rushes out from the door behind him, whispering in his ear, before running back into the office to resume his meeting. The receptionist’s expression instantly changes. “Right this way, ma’am!”

As they walk to the storage room in the back, Hermione probes the man. “Worker. Has there ever been any stores in this mall themed around detectives?”

He nervously glances at her, quite aware of how close he is to losing his job. “Sorry, ma’am, but I just started, I’m not really sure. I can put in a word with upper management if you want!”

Hermione narrows her eyes. “…No, that’s quite alright.” She looks at his nametag. “Albert.”

The man starts walking faster.

As Hermione thoroughly scans the blueprints, she can’t find it. That [REDACTED]… it’s nowhere to be found. She blinks. Odd. Well… whatever. It doesn’t matter anyway.

As she leaves the store, her groupies surround her. “How was it, Hermione?! Did you get another allowance?”

She raises a hand, and they immediately shut up. “At ease. The business was conducted satisfactorily. Now, it is time to shop. For clothing, specifically.”

The girls’ eyes sparkle.

The man looks over. She can’t see his face, since she’s focused on his shoes.

It’s silent, for what seems like an eternity. The man walks over.
And pulls her into a tight embrace. “Love you too, Lorene. Be safe out there, okay?”

She hugs him back, then he pulls away.

…The bus ride to the aquarium took a while. It wasn’t necessarily far, maybe ten or fifteen miles, but the public bus system was incredibly inefficient, with tons of stops. Lorene holds the card for Ruth in her hands as she sits on the bench, bumping along the uneven road.

When she finally arrives, Olivia is already waiting for her outside, and starts running for the bus as soon as she sees her through the window.

“Hey! You’re late!”

Lorene smiles at her, putting on a cheerful expression. “I was making the card!”

Olivia scrolls through her phone, scanning through all the things they had planned. “Sure, but we have to line up for the penguin shop before it opens!!! It’s in five minutes! And both of us have to be there, to get one color of each penguin for her surprise gift!!”

“We’d better run, then!”

“Yeah, let’s do it!” Olivia looks up, then pauses. “…wait. Lorene. …Are you alright?”

She guessed she wasn’t as good at these masks as she thought she was.

After leaving the arts and crafts store in a very cool and wolf-like manner, Clover goes to try and find an appropriate place to set up shop! As it is slowly getting closer to lunch time, there are more people wandering around, and that meant it was perfect timing for recruitment! Eventually, she finds a bench next to a tree, kinda close to the food court, and decides to plant her flag.

Since there were no poles or sign-posts nearby, she leaves the recruitment poster taped to her shirt. Clover HERSELF would be the sign! And while she only had a cheap plastic cellphone that could barely make calls (Henry didn’t trust her with anything more expensive, hmph!), she could still get it to blast out her ringtone!

As she sets up her phone by the tree, and the wolf-howls start looping, Clover stands proudly on top of the bench, rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet until someone comes to check out what cool thing is going on!

After a few minutes, a young couple walks by.

“Awwww, that’s so cute! Are you selling something for a project or fundraiser?”

As the woman looks through her purse for her wallet, Clover simply points at the piece of paper on her chest, continuing to grin and rock back and forth. This was so easy when the sign could do the talking! The man leans forward to read. “Looks like she’s trying to recruit club members, honey. Might be some school event or something.”

“Oh, that’s awesome!” The woman looks up to read the sign too. “It seems like a really cool animal club! Unfortunately, the two of us are probably a little too old to join, haha! Best of luck, okay? Rawr!” The woman does a little grr in support, then the two of them walk off.

Clover grins and just continues to rock back and forth on the balls of her feet, intermittently crouching down to set up the wolf howl loop again.

After some time passes, she unfortunately hears some familiar voices.

“Hey, look, it’s wolf-girl!”
“Oh. My. Gosh. It really is!”
“What is she even doing outside of her containment center?”

The group of mean girls from school that she noticed earlier were approaching.

Hermione clears her throat. “Not to worry. He is simply back home. It’s advanced technology, that you are all extremely privileged to see.”

“Whoa!” The three chime in unison.
“Do we still need to carry the cage around?” Ugly 2 asks.

Hermione allows the three uglies to lead the way, and, as she should’ve expected, they head straight for [Popular Brand]. As the three enter the store, Hermione pauses outside for a moment. This… is the first time she’s ever been shopping. Let alone with other people. There was some small strange feeling in her chest. Hm… Probably nothing. Feelings were for peasants, anyway. The girl walks in.

“Awww, that looks so cute on you!”
“Heh heh, you think so?”

Ugly 2 was holding a shirt up against her torso, while Ugly 1 and 3 clapped. Hermione observed. Absolutely abysmal taste, but she supposed it was only natural for the ugly to have no sense of fashion. The shirt looked like a bunch of random paint splatters. It was also being sold for $120.

“Here, Hermione, you should try this one on!”

Ugly 3 hands her a garish pink jacket. After a moment, Hermione reluctantly pulls it on.

“Pfff, sorry, that seems way too out of place. We’ll find something else that fits you!”

A lot of shopping later, each of the uglies are holding a sizable amount of clothes. They had also picked out some things that looked decent enough for Hermione. The total bill was three thousand dollars. While it really wasn’t that much, it was basically her allowance for the week. And about half of what they picked out was quite ugly, to Hermione’s eye. The three uglies look at her with puppy-eyes, though the puppies must have had strokes.

For the briefest of moments, she considers inviting them to the pack. Maybe if they just saw how much fun it could be, or how cool it was to be a wolf, they’d understand. But she can’t. For her first pack members to be those three girls… she couldn’t bring herself to do it. They’d reject it and laugh in her face anyway.

“Oh? Why’d the howling stop? Too embarrassed to keep going when we’re around?”

The wolf-girl snarls. Clover didn’t hate anybody, because mom always said hatred darkens the soul, but Evelyn Rivers and her friends were people that she very much did not like. They never went out of their way to mess with her, but whenever they happened to be in the same vicinity, they always made her day worse.

“Well, Clover, if you’re done, why don’t you just go home? You’re being a nuisance to everyone here.” Evelyn leans forward to read the sign on her shirt, and laughs. “Awww, look at that, girls, she’s trying to find some friends!”

The other girls laugh too.

“Have you found any takers, yet? No? Well, don’t worry about it, the only people who’d want to join your ‘pack’ are weirdos and creeps, anyway!”

“Go. Away.” Clover’s voice is crystal-clear. “I’m allowed to do what I want.”

“Oh, so the little wolf can talk, huh?” The other girls are taken aback, but Evelyn just shakes her head, smirking. “Can’t you see, Clover? We’re just trying to help you! You have to live in the real world. All this wolf stuff, it’s not healthy! Your parents should have raised you better.”

Hands shaking, Clover stares down at her feet. “…don’t talk bad about mom.”

“Eh? Sorry, what was that? Could you speak up a little?”

“I said. Don’t talk bad about mom.”

Evelyn giggles. “Oh? Yeah? Well, how do you think your mom would feel if she knew her daughter was delusional enough to pretend to be a wolf?”

As the three scurry off, Hermione feels another strange feeling for a moment, before it quickly passes once more.

The uglies leave the store smiling, carrying multiple paper bags with clothes, as Hermione follows behind them, allowing them to lead the way.

“ohmigosh, i’m kinda hungry now”
“you know, me too!”
“we should go to the food court!”

On their journey, while the three uglies chatter happily about vapid nonsense, Hermione notices an interesting occurrence off to the side of the walkway up ahead. Evelyn Rivers, one of the key players for her planned meteoric rise next school-year, appeared to be speaking with some low-class commoner standing on a bench. While it could be a good idea to make some contact with her clique now, she also feels inclined to simply continue on her way with the three uglies. Being too desperate for connections placed her in a position of weakness, and perhaps the optimal path would be to pretend she never saw them at all.

Olivia allows herself to be hugged. “…Hm. Fine. We’ll leave it at that for now. Let’s go grab those penguin plushies before they run out!”

The two run for the aquarium gift shop, shuffling into the line a minute before the store opens. The first hundred people get a free limited-edition penguin plush, and Ruth loved penguins. When the doors open, the mob of people flood in like a tsunami, with Olivia practically at the fore. After an aggressive amount of shoving and squeezing through, she somehow managed to get the two of them from the back of the line to number twenty and twenty-one. The grey and black penguins they hold are proof of it.

As the two sit on the bus, on the way to Ruth’s favorite restaurant for lunch, Olivia runs through the day’s plan for the fifth time. “Alright, so after we eat, we’ll go watch that movie, then after that we force her to try that roller-coaster in the amusement park, walk around with cotton candy, then we end it off with looking at the sunset from the hill we always used to play at!”

Lorene nods along, long-since used to Olivia’s personality.

“Now, the overall plan is still great, but the really key part is making sure we get this first bit right with all the details! We’ve already agreed, we’re giving the plushies and the card during this lunch at the restaurant, but when?! When we finish the meal? When we first see her? Speaking of, how are we even going to greet her? Should we get a table first, so she doesn’t have to wait? She’s a little timid about walking in on her own, so maybe that’s not the best idea. We could either greet her outside, or surprise her as she walks in, what do you think?!”

Her heartbeat was loud, oh so loud.

…As her teeth ripped through skin, the only thing that stopped her from going through bone was Henry.

All of a sudden, the world was clear again. Clover could hear everything. Evelyn’s terrified screams. The other two scrambling away, calling for help. The sounds of footsteps running toward them.

She could hear the sounds of her own sobbing as her tears fell onto the cold tile floor.

She slowly lets go, staring at her shaking hands through her blurred vision. Then, she’s roughly pulled away by multiple people.

“Evelyn, are you alright?!”
“Samantha’s gonna get the first-aid kit!”
“…Here. Rivers. Use this handkerchief.”

The world was spinning. Too many things were happening at once.

Thrown to the side, Clover just curls up into a ball and begins to cry.

Even now, Evelyn is glancing at her with grateful eyes, before being taken away to have her wound more closely examined. Hermione could hardly hold back her smile. What a fortunate set of events. The next school-year was already looking to be quite promising, indeed. A marvelous happenstance.

Her attention turns to the commoner on the floor. Evelyn’s attacker is sobbing, hugging her knees tightly as she lays curled up on the tile floor. Tch. Disgusting.

When Ruth arrives at the restaurant, dropped off by her mom, Lorene and Olivia are ready and waiting.

When the two of them reveal the table with happy birthday cheers, she almost looks like she’s about to cry.

As the food is brought out, and Olivia chatters on and on endlessly while Ruth happily nods along, Lorene can’t help but think that this is the way life was always meant to be. There were no mind-games, no debts, no worries about what would happen next. It was just genuine and pure.

Eventually, it’s time for cake. Olivia places a candle in the center of the singular slice, which the three of them will share.

“Alright, Ruth, make a wish!!”

The birthday-girl is about to close her eyes, then she looks at the two of them. “y-you guys should make wishes too…! let’s blow out the candle together…!”

“That’s a great idea!” Olivia throws an arm around Lorene’s shoulder and pulls her in. “Alright guys, on the count of three! One. Two!”

Lorene stares at the flickering flame.

Hermione gives the girl a look-over to determine if she’s still dangerous. A headband with animal ears and some sort of false tail… perhaps she was clinically insane? Perhaps she truly believed she were an animal? It’d explain the biting.

As she looks over the girl’s hands to make sure she isn’t carrying any sort of weapons, Hermione notices something interesting. Something very interesting. Extremely interesting, in fact. She can hardly hold back her laughter. It was almost unthinkable! This girl… she was wearing a very particular ring.

“wow, you were so cool Hermione!”
“yeah, the way you took charge was awesome!”
“you always stay so level-headed!”

“Quiet.” For once, the uglies’ chattering was distracting her from something extremely important. So, this beast, this commoner… she was a magical girl too. Hermione immediately pulls out her phone and makes a call. “Security. There’s a girl that needs to be detained.”

The response is quick and professional. “Right away, ma’am. We’re on the way.”

Not even thirty seconds later, two dark-suited men appear, and begin to drag the teary-eyed peasant away. If they’d taken much longer, they wouldn’t exactly be fit to be her security detail, after all.

“Girls. Our outing is finished. It’s time for you to return home.”

And Henry would just look at her quietly, with those disappointed eyes. It hurt. It hurt a lot. Clover can still taste blood in her mouth.

They push through a set of doors.

The sun, high in the sky, causes the girl to blink as they begin walking through the mall parking lot. That’s when she notices that something feels very wrong.

Clover had always been an observant girl. Most wouldn’t expect it of her, but she was good at picking out details no one else seemed to see. Especially when things were getting dangerous. These guys… they’re not police officers. They’re wearing non-descript suits, with no badges in sight. Her phone is still in the mall, by the potted plant. The three of them were headed to an unmarked black vehicle, on the other side of the parking lot.

…If she got into that car without her phone, she wouldn’t be able to contact anyone. No one knows where she is. Henry doesn’t know where she is. He wouldn’t know where to look. He would just get home and find an empty room.

The men continue pulling her closer and closer to that vehicle. Clover swallows.

Clover’s eyes are wide with fear.

“HEEEEELPPP!!!!!” Her voice projects over the entire parking lot, scattering the birds above.

“Fuck!” The two men grab her arms more tightly and begin to quickly pull her toward the vehicle. “We’re not even supposed to have to do this shit, but I don’t want to lose my fucking job!”

In the distance, she hears a bark. …Then, she hears multiple.

“W-what the fuck?!”

A pack of dogs swarm the two men, and Clover takes the chance to break away. She runs straight for the black vehicle, and jumps through, shattering the window and rolling into the driver’s seat like someone super cool.

As Clover stares down at the steering wheel and all the controls, she realizes she has no idea what she’s doing. She mashes on all the buttons desperately, but nothing is turning on. That’s when she remembers that cars need keys to turn on. The wolf-girl panics and jumps out the other window, shattering it and sending even more glass flying everywhere.

She runs. She runs far, far away. Eventually, the girl comes to a stop. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the forested park, she realizes that no one is chasing her anymore. She finds a little hollow underneath a tree and crawls in.

As Clover sits, watching the blades of grass blow in the summer breeze, the wolf-girl just curls up into a ball and thinks.

Hermione waves the three uglies off, the absolute picture of an elegant and refined lady, as her chauffeur drives them back to their paltry family homes. Simple solutions were often the best. Now, for her investigation.

At this point, most of the crowd has dispersed. There was nothing more to see, after all. Evelyn was taken away for treatment, the beast was detained. In addition to that, most knew almost nothing of what had happened. They were simply bystanders that happened to be in the area.

Her questioning, however, was not entirely fruitless. From one of her classmates, she was able to get a single name. Clover Beets.

Her phone buzzes. She glances at the caller ID, before immediately picking up.

“…Hello, father.”

“Hermione. Return home, and get dressed. We’ll be hosting an impromptu party for your sister tonight, in anticipation of her upcoming farewell. We expect you to be ready by six.”

“…Yes, father.”

The man hangs up.

Hermione takes a deep breath, exhaling forcefully, before putting her phone back into her pocket and heading for the mall’s parking lot.

Olivia begins measuring out how to divide the cake evenly with some strange eyeballing with the plastic utensils. Ruth looks at the two of you nervously.

Olivia closes one eye as she tries to line up the perfect cut. “Silly Ruth, if we tell each other, they won’t come true!”

The man doesn’t respond. He’s still passed out on the couch, though there are a few more beer bottles scattered around.

Clover pulls off her shoes and puts them on the shoe-rack. It seemed like her brother wasn’t back from work yet. His shoes weren’t there.

The girl sits at the dinner table in her usual chair, stretching her arms before resting her forehead on the hard wood. “…haaaaaaaah.” She turns. Mom’s chair was still there. Even though the only ones who still sat at the table were her and Henry.

Her stomach grumbles. The only thing she’d had to fuel her all day was that bowl of cereal in the morning. She wanted to grab something to eat, but she wasn’t supposed to snack before dinner. All she could do was wait.

She puts her hand into her pocket, and feels a crumpled piece of paper. She pulls it out. It was her bad luck charm, for Henry. …The thing had really been too effective. The frowny face stares back at her silently.

Hermione stood, still as stone, as her maids fixed her hair and adjusted her dress. The Rockefeller family was known for perfection in their grand parties. Not a single hair could be out of place, even for smaller occasions.

The maids bow, and take their leave. She was ready.

Hermione’s parents were generally laid-back. As the younger sister, she was largely free to do as she pleased, excepting particularly idiotic actions, of course. There were a few things they were particular about, social events being one of them, but her life, in general, was nice. The majority of the burdens that came with being a daughter of the Rockefellers fell on her older sister.

In two weeks, Aurelia Rockefeller would be meeting her future husband for the first time. In three, she’d be marrying him.

While the situation sounded like fertile grounds for a poetic tragedy, the likes of Romeo and Juliet, the truth was that things weren’t that bad. Her sister never really had any crushes, nor any childhood sweethearts to reminisce on. The man wasn’t that much older than her, and he seemed decent enough. It was all just an uneventful affair in the grand world the Rockefellers lived in. Commonplace, with no real scandals.

Hermione’s shoes clack against the marble floor of the entry hall. The party was due to begin in forty-five minutes, but for perfection to be maintained, everything had to be ready well ahead of time. Off in the corner, she notices her older sister with a furrowed brow, staring down at the speech she was supposed to memorize.

Lorene sighs, as she takes in the scenery around her. The day had truly been perfect. Huddling together during a particularly tense scene in the movie, screaming at the tops of their lungs as the roller-coaster sped down a hill, nibbling on cotton candy as they tried various carnival games at the amusement park, Lorene wouldn’t trade away a single one of those memories for anything.

The three of them lay back on the grassy slope, watching the clouds lazily float by in the burnt orange sky.

“Happy birthday, Ruth.”

Olivia’s voice is subdued, yet satisfied.

“…thanks guys…” Ruth is staring at the sky too. “i hope we all stay friends forever…”

“…We will. I’ll make sure of it.” Lorene’s response is firm.

The three of them lay in silence for a long while, before Olivia sits up. “Alright. …Lorene. What’s going on?”

Lorene remains quiet, as Ruth looks back and forth between the two of them, confused.

“Lorene. We’re your friends, you know. You can talk to us about anything. Maybe we’ll be able to help.”

Hermione pulls out her phone from the small purse around her wrist, checking on the status of the investigation. No reply, as of yet. She supposed it was to be expected. The security team was busy screening every guest on the invite list and preparing for the event, after all. They had a long night ahead of them, especially now that two of their most promising hires had been let go earlier this afternoon.

Hermione looks up, glancing at her sister. It seemed she hadn’t noticed her yet. Hermione focuses on her phone, pretending to tap on it nonchalantly as she approaches her older sibling. “…My dear sister. What might you be preparing?”

Aurelia looks up from her paper, and beams when she sees her. Hermione looks even more intently at the settings screen for her phone. “Hermione! You look beautiful!” On instinct, the young woman reaches out to hug her little sister tightly, but stops herself. Messing up both of their outfits would be improper. “I’m not doing anything much, just making sure I have my introductory speech ready. How was your day with your friends, Hermione?”

“…It was fine, dear sister.” Hermione puts away her phone, before holding out her hand, still not making eye contact. “Let me take a look.”

“Sure!”

Hermione scans the page. It was clearly written by her father, or some other family aide. It started with the traditional remarks, then went into how excited her older sister was to be marrying, how she’d looked forward to marriage since she was a child, and a deep hope that all the guests would be there for the ceremony. In short, it was vomit. It didn’t sound much like her older sister at all.

Hermione glances at her sister. If there was any amount of discontent, it wasn’t visible on her face.

alright, you have no idea what she's feeling right now, but based off how long you've known your sister, and observing her over the past few weeks after the whole wedding thing became a possibility/brought to light, this is what you can surmise
ultimately, aurelia is okay with being married off. she sees it as her duty, both as a member of the rockefeller family, and as your older sister. she believes that by doing so, and following the instructions of her parents, she can win hermione more freedom to do what she wants with her life. deep down, aurelia does kinda wish life would be like those romance novels, with a dashing prince to sweep her off her feet, but she knows that's not realistic, even if she weren't the heiress to the rockefeller family anyway. she doesn't know anything about the guy, but she's not inherently opposed.

Clover stares at the crumpled charm. Then, she rips it up into tiny pieces, and throws it away. No one needed that thing anymore.

She stands up from the dinner table and looks over the living room. It was a bit of a mess. Beer bottles were strewn over the floor, a few spills and stains here and there. Dad had knocked the lamp over at some point in the day, and the lightbulb was broken. Henry was the one who did all the cooking, so she decided she’d be the one to clean up the living room tonight.

The wolf-girl pulls on some gloves, grabs a trash-bag from the pantry, and begins to work. First, she picked up the bottles, dumping any residual liquid down the sink. Then, she takes out the broken lightbulb, sweeping up all the glass shards. As she works, she makes sure she doesn’t disturb dad. Both of them never wanted to disturb dad.

As she scrubs at the stains on the floor using a mixture of random cleaning products she found under the sink, she hears the front door open.

“I’m home.”

It was her brother’s familiar, deadpan voice.
…She had to admit she was glad to hear it.

As Henry walks in, he briefly pauses when he notices the wolf-girl diligently scrubbing away. Then he continues into the kitchen, setting down his stuff and going to his room to take off his uniform.

When Clover finishes, she puts back all the supplies, takes off the gloves, washes her hands, then sits in her seat, kicking her legs as she patiently waits. Henry re-emerges from his room, then pauses again.

Henry puts Clover’s cellphone down on the table in front of her. Clover stares at it. He moves to sit in the chair across from her.

“…Alright. What happened.”

…She can’t bring herself to look at his face.

“Being a good person doesn’t make someone less of a dumbass.” Olivia puts a hand to her chin, thinking. Ruth just listens. “You’ve got a level head on your shoulders, Lorene. I think if you just explain yourself, your dad will understand and let you help out.”

Lorene stares down at her hands in her lap. “…what if I can’t?”

“…Can’t what? Explain yourself?”

Her hands curl into fists. She doesn’t respond.

“… i…” Olivia and Lorene both turn to Ruth. She’s staring at Lorene, a determined look on her face. “…i think that you should try. sometimes… there are things that need to be said, no matter what.”

Olivia nods. “Ruth’s right. If someone’s being dumb, you tell them. If there’s something you want to say, you need to say it.”

Lorene looks down, hiding her eyes. “…Thanks guys. I mean it.”

Olivia scoffs, before standing up. “That’s what friends are for.” She extends her hands to help the both of them up. She brushes off Lorene’s shoulder, then looks her in the eyes. “Lorene. Tomorrow, I expect a good report on how the conversation went, okay?”

“…me too.” Ruth’s voice is firm.

Lorene smiles. “Alright.”

Hermione reads over the speech again, then pulls out a pen from her purse. Aurelia silently watches. The girl reorganizes the speech, underlining certain words for emphasis, moving sections around for a more coherent message. When she’s done, she returns it to her older sister. “There, dear sister. That mess of words should more clearly express how much you’re looking forward to the wedding now.”

Aurelia gives it a read, before looking back up with a cheerful smile. “Thanks, Hermione! I really appreciate it! It really does flow a lot smoother now!”

“It is of no consequence, dear sister. Merely a familial obligation.” Hermione steps away, about to leave her sister to her responsibilities, when she stops. “…Aurelia.”

Hermione smiles. She faces her sister head-on. “I know you, dear sister.”

The girl tilts her head, confused. “That’s good! I think I know you, too?”

Hermione giggles. “This marriage… it’s simply a duty that the prestigious heiress to the Rockefeller family must fulfill, no? You have no great joy for the obligation, you simply do as you’re instructed.”

Aurelia remains silent.

Hermione gestures to the wall. Framed in the evening light shining through the tall windows above, a shadowy silhouette of a girl sitting properly in a chair, back straight, hands in her lap, appears. “A girl with no desires of her own. A prim and proper heiress, flawless on every front. The perfect image of the Rockefeller line. However.” She waves her hand, and another silhouette appears. “…I know the truth, dear sister.”

A shadowy man with tousled locks and a crown kneels before the chair.

“I know those forbidden dreams of yours, dear sister. Those childish fantasies you’ve always tried to discard. Deep down, you’d like someone to save you, no? A handsome prince, to sweep you off your feet, and take you away from this glamorous world.”

The man takes the girl’s hand, then picks her up, placing her on a horse. The two ride off together, to lands unknown.

“How improper! How impure! Mother always said those romance novels you’d read when you were young would corrupt your mind, and how right she was!” Hermione laughs. “You’re not who you pretend to be, Aurelia, no matter how much you may wish it was the case. You’re nothing more than another dreaming girl, unfit for the position you were born to take.”

The girl doesn’t say a word.

The words hang in the air for a moment. Henry sighs. “I got a call from the police while I was at work.”

…Oh.

“They said some crazed girl bit someone. The name they got from the victim was Clover Beets.”

Clover looks down at her hands. The clock on the wall softly ticks behind her.

“So. I’ll ask you again. What happened?”

Her hands shake. “I… They…” She swallows. “…they were saying mean things about mom.”
Henry doesn’t say anything.

“I-I know it was wrong, but-!” Clover pauses. …but? Was there any but? Was there anything that justified what she did? “…But I lost control of myself.”

“…Clover.” She looks up, a little scared. It was that same face again. Henry just stares at her with disappointment in his eyes. “…People only have as much power over you as you let them. Ultimately, you’re the one in control of your actions.”

“…okay.”

Henry exhales, running a hand through his hair. “After it all happened, why did you run? The officers said you were nowhere to be found at the scene.”

“O-oh, that. That! Some weird suited men tried to take me, and shove me in a car! They weren’t police! They really weren’t! I barely escaped!”

Henry looks at her in disbelief, but Clover’s earnest expression doesn’t change. His skepticism slowly fades. “…That sounds dangerous.” He glances out the window. The sun was just setting on their normal neighborhood outside. “I’m glad you got away.”

“…yeah.”

Henry wordlessly gets up to cook dinner. After a moment, Clover stands too, to help him out. He glances at her. “…By the way. The police aren’t going to be investigating anymore. After I had a chat with the girl, she decided to drop all charges.”

Clover looks at her feet. “…that’s good.”

Dinner was an uneventful affair. It was their usual meal, of chicken and broccoli. After Clover finishes washing the dishes, she sits back down across from her brother, staring at him anxiously.

“…I plugged the router back in. You can go play whatever you want.”

He’s just staring down at the dark wood of the dinner table. It seemed like he was going to be there for a while.

alright, here's the analysis
henry is currently disappointed. not necessarily about clover, though it plays a role, but about himself. he thinks that if he hadn't tried to get clover outside the house by taking away the router, this wouldn't have happened. he's frustrated that he never seems to know the right thing to say or do. he wants to help clover grow as a person, but he feels lost. he thinks it can't be healthy for her to just game all the time, but the one time he tried to get her outside, this happened. he wishes he were as good as mom, or as good as dad back before the accident. his plan is to just sit there, then go to sleep to wake up early tomorrow, and work overtime to make up for the work he missed this afternoon with the whole police thing.

She lingers there for a moment longer, before breaking away. She rushes off to her room. Henry gives a brief half-hearted wave, before returning to staring at the table in silence.

She looks up a lot of things. “weird suit guys at mall”. “weird suit kidnappers”. “weird guys mall”. “suited guys mall weird”. “weird guys not officers wearing suits at mall”. None of them show anything! She leans back in her chair. Agh! How was she gonna get to the bottom of this, when Google didn’t even know the answer! She leans back farther, on the edge of falling, before sitting back forward with a thunk. Those guys… they probably covered their tracks too well. That was why she couldn’t find anything!

Clover scratches her head. Well… whatever. If she couldn’t find out anything about them, she just had to be able to beat them up if they showed up again.

Name: Laura Aedelwulf
Characteristics: 14, 156 cm, 1/8 JP. A tad above average physically and in school but not in any way that stands out. Has no friends but isn't treated any differently for it. Her parents both died fairly recently so she lives alone, but she never has once cried for either of them. Perhaps it was because of their cold unloving demeanors borne from working 996 schedules for every day of her living memory, but the thought that she might be a sociopath is deeply concerning to her. Spends much of her time on the /book/ panel of @board arguing about literature she doesn't understand. Listens to Satie's Gymnopedies and Chopin's Nocturnes as a matter of habit but fails to look beyond them or understand them on any level but superficial.

I won't lie, I made her with the understanding that she'd witch out sooner rather than later, but my idea for this character is something of a low-IQ pseudo-intellectual glass cannon. Clover cracks her knuckles. Finally, after a long day, it was time to kick back and relax with a long night of the greatest game ever invented in the history of man and wolfkind. Her brother heads to his room to get an early night’s sleep, while her father snores away on the couch.

Hermione silently observes as her sister gives a passionate introductory speech to the guests in the grand hall, completely from memory. It was flawless, as usual. If their earlier conversation had disturbed her, not a trace of it could be found in her expressions or her performance. Polite clapping fills the air when she finishes.

She glances at the clock. It was 8 pm. Seven more hours of small-talk and socialization awaited.

The wolf-girl begins to doze off, head drooping in her chair as her laptop screen turns dark from inactivity.

The girl with scarlet hair pauses for a moment, watching as her sister, framed in soft moonlight, sits by the window looking out at the night sky. She turns away and continues toward her bedroom quietly, to sleep.

The girl who’d found the courage to speak stares at her phone with tired eyes. Thirty-seven outgoing calls to her parents, and none of them answered. Eyes watering from the strain, she decides to close them and rest for just a moment.

In the deep abyss of dreams, crystal cathedrals glitter in the dark. A voice can be heard, echoing out into the darkness.

“This is an urgent message, to all magical girls in the city. The Coordinator has been found dead. I repeat: the Coordinator has been found dead. This is an urgent message. Today, Clover isn’t woken by loud knocking at the door. Instead, she’s awoken by pain and the sound of crashing as her chair falls to the ground.

“…owwwww…”

The wolf-girl whines as she rubs at her head, sprawled out on the floor. She slowly stands, nursing a headache from staring at a screen until unholy hours of the night.

Routines were routine for a reason. The girl slowly brushes at her teeth while staring at her tired reflection in the mirror. Perhaps two nights of gaming into early morning awakenings was a little too much for her body to handle. Then, she shakes her head, sending toothpaste foam flying everywhere. A true wolf was never tired!

“Good morning, dad!”

She rushes to the breakfast table to pour herself another glass of milk and bowl of cereal. No note was waiting for her at her seat today. As she chomps down on cereal, legs kicking excitedly, she wonders what the day will have in store for her today. Hopefully, it’d be a lot better than yesterday!

Hermione stretches as she comfortably awakens after five hours of sleep. She briefly enjoys the softness of her bedsheets before sitting up, fully awake. She claps once, and attendants arrive to help her get dressed for the morning.

As she rinses her face with chilled water, she allows the illusion to fade for a moment and stares at her malformed face in the stone basin. Steely eyes coolly stare back. It was a fact of the world that appearance and first impressions often dictated everything. That reality was neither fortunate nor unfortunate, simply the truth. She reweaves the false image, and a pretty girl with perfect teeth looks back. When living in the world, one simply had to play by its rules.

Her two maids follow from behind at a distance while she proceeds to the breakfast room. Tall glass windows, letting in the morning light, line the hallway. Along the way, she glances into her father’s study. He was having an extensive discussion with her sister, who simply nodded along silently. It appeared the two had remained awake through the night.

She takes a seat at one end of the long rectangular table, and her plate of freshly cooked eggs with toast is placed in front of her with a glass of orange juice and a cup of tea. As she elegantly eats, she considers the day’s plans. It was rather unfortunate it was summer. Her grand entrance for the school year wouldn’t be for another three months.

Lorene blinks, as she finds herself in a puddle of her own drool. She sits up, wiping at her face, and immediately grimaces. Sleeping face-first on a wooden table while sitting in a wooden chair happened to cause a lot of pain in a lot of places. She carefully massages at her neck while she checks her phone.

Still nothing.

She glances around. All of the lights and lamps are still on from the night before. Her parents’ bedroom is still empty.

The girl rubs at her temples, before taking a deep breath. There was no point in panicking. She just had to do what needed to be done. The cup of frozen yogurt she’d shared with her friends being her only dinner from the night before, she decides to cook some sort of breakfast for herself.

As she scrambles a few eggs thinned out by milk, she reflects on what she knows. Her father had mentioned he’d be contacting the debt collectors yesterday. While it was theoretically possible the event was related, it was unlikely that they would do something so obviously illegal as abduct them. The note her father had left had clearly been in his own handwriting as well, and written in an unrushed script. Perhaps more dangerous forces were at work, then.

Lorene’s eyes harden. Or, perhaps, there was an element of the supernatural.

After finishing her breakfast, Hermione heads back to the game-room. Underneath the lion’s head, she logs into the desktop and inputs an address into the browser, as if in a dream. After a moment’s hesitation, she hits enter.

The page is empty. Cold black text across the center of the screen simply states that the site is no longer available.

Undeterred, she utilizes the aid of internet archival services. If the site were unavailable now, she’d at the very least investigate what secrets the page once held. After retyping the address, she’s able to find a version of the site from two years ago.

‘Have a mystery that needs solving??? Just reach out!
The one and only magical detective!’

It was a rather crudely organized site. Whoever made it had the design sensibilities of a child. And yet… the interesting find was the logo at the bottom. It looked like a soul gem.

Hermione glances at the clock in the corner of the screen. It was 9:45 am.

After inhaling her bowl of cereal and rinsing the bowl in the sink, Clover rushes back into her room. If she was gonna be awake, she figured she might as well hop back onto the game! This time, the router was still here, so there was nothing stopping her!

As she boots up her laptop once more, a vague memory resurfaces. The interesting thing about dreams is that while the memories are still there the morning after, it can be difficult to remember what exactly happened without some kind of trigger or purposeful reflection. Oftentimes, people simply let any memories of the phenomenon fade, as they move on with their real lives.

In Clover’s case, the message from the night before was crystal clear.

She stands and puts a hand to her chin, thinking. Well… at the very least, there could be new recruits for her pack there! She looks around for her sign, before realizing that it’s still taped to her shirt. It’s ripped up and has some holes in some places after yesterday’s events, but the message is still readable!

… “I’m heading out, Dad!”

As the public bus bumps along the road, Lorene reflects for a moment on how messed up it was that she had to take public transportation to get to a different center for public transportation. Alas, that was just how life happened to be at times. She glances at her phone. Even with all the stops along the way, she should still make it on time.

The girl’s eyes narrow. That message was her only lead on anything right now. She hoped it led somewhere good.

Hermione stares at the screen, considering how to further proceed. Perhaps there was some way to look into the logo further, and find out where it was uploaded from. While she thinks, she has a sudden recollection, and immediately pulls out her phone.

“Samantha. It’s Hermione. Head to the central station immediately.”

“Huh? What’s going on, Hermione?”

She looks at the clock. It was 9:46. Every second spent talking was another second wasted. “Just go there, now.”

“O-okay!” The voice becomes a bit fainter. “Moooom! Can you take me to the train station? Like, right now??” A pause. “Huh? What’s the urgency? Uhh, my friend needs me or something?” The voice becomes more and more indistinct.

“Call me when you get there! Set up an AirPod!”

The line drops. Hermione’s eye twitches for a moment, before she shakes her head to clear her thoughts. There was no point worrying about hypotheticals. The girl begins to look into how she could find the location that the poorly drawn soul gem was uploaded from.

The two arrive at the station at the same time, Lorene calmly stepping off the bus while Clover pants, out of breath from running seven blocks. At the top of the staircase, a nervous girl is pacing back and forth, talking to herself quietly.

“crap, crap, crap, this is so dumb, I’m such an idiot, this is such a bad idea, I’m gonna die, I’m gonna get killed, crap, crap”

When she notices the two girls, she runs down the staircase to see them.

“Alright, the two of you are magical girls, right?” She looks around anxiously, before glancing down at her watch. “crap, crap, it’s only 9:56, crap, I should wait, just in case anyone else shows up, crap, crap”

Her foot taps impatiently as she stares at her watch, willing the seconds to go by faster. Lorene blinks as she looks at the other two girls, before raising her hand. “…Um, wh-”

“Aaaaa, no, no, I don’t know what you’re about to say but no names, no personal information, this is dangerous, this is really dangerous!”

“A-awooo?” Clover contributes to the discussion.

Her watch hits 9:59. “Screw it, let’s start!” The girl looks up at the two of them, scanning them over quickly. “Okay, I don’t recognize either of you, which makes sense and is a good thing. Long story short, I think there’s a magical girl killer!”

The last word was a little loud. The girl covers her mouth nervously, looking around the area to see if anyone was watching. After a moment, Lorene speaks. “…what?”

The girl pulls the two of them into a huddle. “Alright, so, basically, I was heading over to the Coordinator’s place to pay a visit, since I thought it was weird she hadn’t been reachable for over a week now, but when I got there, I found her-” She turns her head, scanning rapidly, before resuming in a whisper. “d-e-a-d. Like, bleehhhh, actually dead! It was bad, really bad! I threw up!”

Lorene’s brow furrows. Clover tilts her head, confused.

The girl smacks her forehead. “Right! You’re both here because you don’t know what that means! Okay, so, basically, the Coordinator is like a really cool and nice magical girl who helps all the other magical girls with whatever! She can’t really fight that well, but she’s neutral and helps everyone! So, there’s no reason for anyone to-” She whispers again. “k-i-l-l her! This is bad, really bad!”

Lorene pauses. “How do you know there’s a magical girl killer? It’s unfortunate,” Lorene’s hand curls into a fist. “Really unfortunate, but there’s a lot of bad people out there. This could just be a random murder.”

If you know there’s something out there, then you’ll be more prepared. But…” The girl’s eyes widen and she starts to panic once more. “I can’t refine my messages that well! It’s not like I can just pick out ‘magical girls that started in the last month’ or ‘girls who don’t know who the Coordinator is’! I sent out that message to every magical girl in the city! Which means-!” The girl looks up, frantically scanning the rooftops around them. “If the killer is a magical girl, she knows about this meeting too! Agh, I’m so screwed!”

She steps away, clearly ready to run.

“Alright, we all need to leave! I’ll give you guys a little time for one or two quick questions, but make it fast!!!!”

The girl flushes. “What?! Didn’t you two hear any of what I just told you?!? There could be a killer here, watching us as we speak! We shouldn’t share any personal information at all! Especially not here!! It’s dangerous! What if the killer finds out where we live and kills us in our sleep or something?!”

Lorene narrows her eyes as she tries to quickly think.

“Uhhhhhhhhhhhh actually, you know what, I don’t even know?” The girl stops pacing and puts a hand to her chin. “Let’s see… me… Coordinator… you guys… detective? Maybe? I don’t know like twelve or something? Anyway, those are your questions, time’s up, let’s split off!!”

As the girl turns to run, a confident voice calls out. “Wait just a second!” Clover hmphs with a self-assured air. The eyes of both Lorene and the mystery girl turn toward her. “I’ve solved the case!”

“Huh? Already?” The mystery girl tilts her head. “What did you figure out?”

>J'ACCUSE! I think YOU killed them!

“What?!?!? You think I’M the killer?!? Why would I even put myself in danger by coming all the way out here and broadcasting to everyone that the Coordinator was killed?!?! Wouldn’t it be smarter to just leave that hidden?? …Wait………” The girl gasps. “What if one of you are the killer!?! Maybe you were just pretending the whole time, to try to infiltrate?! I’m SO DEAD AAAAAAAAAAAAA” The girl runs and jumps away, as fast as she can.

Both girls blink.

Belatedly, after quickly rethinking through their conversation in her head, Clover realizes she didn’t seem to be lying.

>What now? Chase after her? Split off like she suggested? Find out who this other girl is standing next to you?

Alright! Lorene has m4 dex, Clover has m5 dex, mystery girl has m4 dex. This roll will be for how far/fast mystery girl runs. As mystery girl has the tiniest of leads, Lorene has to beat her roll by 5 to catch up to her, Clover effectively gets a +20 but has to surpass the same 5 threshold as Lorene. As the girl runs off, Lorene and Clover exchange a brief glance, before immediately understanding what they have to do. “C’mon, pup!” Clover lets out a howl and begins to run on all fours, while Lorene jogs normally behind.

At the sounds of footsteps behind her, the girl looks back over her shoulder, before panicking even harder. “W-what?!?! Why are you guys chasing me?! Are you both actually the killers?!?!?” She begins to run even faster, rushing past amused onlookers.

But, no matter how fast that girl runs, even handicapping herself by going on all fours, Clover is faster. “AWOOOOOOO!” Like a wolf, she closes the distance bit by bit, until finally-! She pounces!

“AAAAAAAAAAA” The two tumble in a large ball of flailing arms and legs, rolling down the street, until it ends with Clover as the victor on top.

A distance back, Lorene can’t help but smile a little at the absurdity as she leisurely catches up.

“W-what do you guys want from me?” The girl is shielding her face with her hands, kicking ineffectually from her position. “Please don’t kill me! I just wanted to do something nice and look out for any new girls, I knew it was a dumb idea!”

Hermione smiles at herself as she looks at her handiwork. It took some time researching IP addresses and geolocation and how to even find the IP address that old images were uploaded from, but she’d done it. The drawing had been uploaded from a computer in this city. The exact location, she was unsure, but it was definitely from somewhere in town.

Her phone rings. She immediately picks up.

“Haaaah… haaah… I made it to the station, Hermione…”

“What do you see?” The poor girl is completely out of breath, having had to run from her place to the station since her mother was 'busy' cleaning, but Hermione rapidly questions her anyway.

“I… I saw… some girls… running off somewhere… they were… too fast… I don’t know… where they are…”

Hermione frowns.

The girl’s face is covered by shadow. She clenches her jaw for a moment, before forcefully exhaling. “You know what? You’ve convinced me. You’re not the murderers. The real killer wouldn’t be as much of a dumbass.”

Her voice is cold. There’s not a trace of the former panic.

“I can’t believe I ever thought this would be a good idea. I put my own life at risk for this? For two dumbasses who can’t even understand what I’m telling them?” Her breathing quickens. She starts to laugh miserably. “I can’t believe it. I’m gonna die. I’m actually gonna die, for these two idiots who don’t even care about me!”

She laughs until her breath fails her. When she starts speaking again, her voice is dull. “…Alright. Let me spell it out for you two idiots in case it wasn’t crystal clear. I had no obligation to do this. I could’ve let you two waltz around without a clue in the world. If you got killed by the murderer, you wouldn’t have even known to look for it coming. I reached out because I thought that’d be an unfair way to die. I did this, because for some godforsaken reason I thought it was the right thing to do. I gained nothing from this. In fact, all I did was lose. All I did was put myself at risk.” The girl sighs. “…Fuck.”

She kicks at Clover. “Wolf-girl, get off me. Now. I’m done with this. I’m done with all of this. I don’t care anymore. Just let me go. I’ll just die like the dumbass I always was.”

“y-yes?” The tired girl already knows what’s coming. All that was left was the dreadful anticipation.

The girl swallows. Even though she’s about to die, she’s considering it.

“haah… fine…” The girl tiredly walks off. She hangs up the phone and puts it back in her pocket to conserve what little energy she has left.

Hermione logs out of the desktop, finished with her investigation. As she stands, she idly wonders what her mother is up to. Mother was likely in her favorite room in the home, but whether she was busy or simply knitting, Hermione was unsure.

As she steps out into the windowed hall once more, she considers what she knows. Clearly, there had been some actual meeting at the station, so the message from the night before hadn’t just been some delusion. It was rather unfortunate that her proxy got there late. Hopefully, she’d be able to glean at least a little more from following their trail before she collapsed.

Hermione’s mother is sitting in her typical chair in the sunroom, speaking with someone on the phone about wedding venues. When Hermione enters, her mother asks the person on the other end of the line to hold. “Yes, Hermione, dear? Did you need anything?”

“Nothing in particular, mother. I simply wanted to see what you had planned for the day?”

“Ah.” Her mother gives an apologetic smile. “As you know, your father and I are very busy planning for your sister’s wedding.” She glances at her small notebook for her schedule. “I may have some time this afternoon, before dinner, dear?”

Hermione glances down at the fruit bowl on the table.
