“Let’s open the chest.”
The sharp, reinforced scalpel plunged into the Rangdan’s chest. Pangea grip’s tightened, then pulled the blade down and into a Y shape. The tough skin needed a steady pull from the mechanical arms, once open, Pangea and Amar examined each organ. Pangea nudged, pulled, and eventually cut out the organ after studying them, following Amar’s instruction more than doing the examination on her own.
“So, how are you feeling, daughter?”
Pangea looked across from the Rangdan corpse. “I’m fine… Why do you ask?”
A sickening plop popped as a tweezer pulled a circular organ. “To see if you’re feeling well. Are you?”
She glared. “I’m fine.”
“Are you sure? I—”
The table rattled as Pangea slammed her fists on the autopsy table. “I said I’m fine! It’s not like I’m mad that Father chose to rob me of my legion, my retinue, and the glory of hunting down the Rangdan, the xeno race I found first!”
“I see.” Amar said. “Pangea, the Great Crusade does not reward missions to those who found an enemy first, only those who are fit.”
“And I’m not fit enough?”
“I did not say that.”
Amar set her scalpel down and powered down the mechanical arms.]
“That’ll be all for today, get some rest.”
After the autopsy, Pangea…

The Sanctum Imperialis Principa shimmered in its golden beauty. Diani followed behind quietly with soft steps. Custodians passed by and the few serfs bowed at her presence. A magnetically attached cart followed behind Pangea and Diani, filled with Terran ores and rare minerals. While she heard Vulkan was a blacksmith like her brothers, but a craftsman at heart like Fulgrim. Pangea’s heart thumped, unsure of her brother’s reaction. Her finger tips touched together as she bit her lips at the entrance of the chambers. “Do I look good?” Pangea fiddled her earring and dusted off the immaculate cardinal dress uniform, with her newly made uniform of black, red, and gold accents. While the Inquisition has yet to be formally made, astartes and soldiers alike already knew, or at the very least, were aware of a force led by the princess not focused wholly on combat. “You look dashing, my lady.” Diani said. “Good. Good.” Pangea drew a long breath. “Let’s go.” Vulkan’s chamber was adorned with Nocturnian symbols and aesthetics. Skins of large reptile beasts and skulls of various animals adorned the pillars and the doors. Not only did the serfs bent their knees, but the astartes as well. Past the door and into the marble floored room, at the top of the staircase leading to the forge below, Diani stopped, the heat radiating already made her lungs heave. “You can’t handle the heat here. Diani, let’s wait in the anteroom instead.” “Of course, my lady. However, we are on time and did give notice that we will be visiting, yes?” Pangea shrugged. “Maybe he didn’t get it, it’s not a big deal.” At the anteroom, Pangea sat on a plush sofa made of hard wooden frame with sleek obsidian for armbars. The cushions themselves never lost its cool touch and its softness. “I recognize you.”

The serf nodded. “Yes, you have my deepest gratitude for helping me at the kitchen.” The table was set with typical snacks from the Imperium Palace kitchen, odd since many of her brothers preferred their homeworld’s meals. Fulgrim enjoyed showing Chemos’s advancing cuisines, and Magnus with Tizcan fruits. “Say, how come you won’t serve me food from Nocturne?” “Oh, that’s because the irradiated ingredients are not fit for non-Nocturnians.” The serf said. “I see.” Pangea picked the berry off of the vines. Vulkan soon arrived, dressed in a long green robe and a an ornate obsidian pauldron with gold accents. The charred skin and fiery eyes glowed underneath the chandelier made of bones and horns, but not outshone his friendly smile. “Sister.” Vulkan said softly. “I apologize for not greeting you when you arrived.” “No need to apologize, brother. I’m the one who owes you an apology, you only wanted to alleviate my mood and I lashed at you for that, I sincerely apologize.” “Thank you, I forgive you sister, we are not immune to our emotions, that is what makes us human. I forgive you.” Vulkan gently placed his hand on her shoulder, his smile soft and gentle. “What’s the cart you brought?” “I know my words are not enough, so I brought you rare materials from Terra and other worlds I’ve visited.” “Why didn’t you say so? I wanted to give you a gift as well.” “A gift?” "Yes, that's why I was late." The astartes carried a beautifully made armor, balancing defense and mobility with masterful craftsmanship. The new color had the armor covered in green, with bronze accents and scale leather loincloth below a utility belt and holsters. Pangea’s eyes glistened, she traced her hand on the armor while Diani marveled at the craftsmanship. She ran her hand around the neck area where a black neckguard had a unique pattern. “This isn’t normal material, is it?” “Very astute, this is leather from a Kesare, tougher than ceramite but light as a feather.” Vulkan said. “That’s not all.” Vulkan’s large hands gently grasped the gauntlet and twisted a small mechanism. A small blade slipped from the palm side of the wrists. The sabatons had hidden blades on the heels and the forefeet. Other than the amazing craftsmanship, something else demanded praise as well, those were Vulkan's hands. Large, capable of crushing bones, yet he created delicate armor like this. Somehow, Pangea felt they were going to get along well. “Father said the nature of your duties change often, so I left the armor mostly free of features to suit your needs. However, I could not help add some personal touches.” A skull of a small reptile rested at the center of the chest piece with two crossed hammers with an anvil below. “The skull of the lizard is a Drygnirr, a fire lizard associated with hope, visions and prophecy.” “I… I don’t know what to say. I came here to give you an apology, but it seems like I will be leaving with a gift. Thank you, Vulkan.” “Think nothing of it, Pangea. There are few more minor details I wish to work on, but once it’s finished I will have the armor sent to your room.” “Take your time, it’s not like I will be leaving anytime soon…” Pangea said with a dry chuckle. “Thank you Vulkan. This is a very lovely gift.” “Think nothing of it.”

Vulkan patted Pangea’s head, the two smiled at one another. Later, Pangea learned more about Nocturne and its culture with accompanying drinks and snacks. While the word ‘cult’ alarmed Pangea, the cult itself was nothing like Lorgar’s vulgar religion. Rather, she found their principle on self-reliance, self-sacrifice and loyalty to be admirable, and something her crew should learn as well. “Frankly, I do not want those tech priests with me as well. While my retinue can maintain their own weapons, I’m disappointed most of the astramilitarum cannot. I understan why, but it still irks me.” Pangea said. “I’m glad the tech priests do not bind your sons, our brothers should learn from you.” “You give me too much credit. I will be more than glad to assist them.” “If they’re smart enough, they will. But our brothers operates in their own ways. A gift and a curse. I just hope we can cooperate better in the future… No, I know we will.” “Indeed, we may be different, but we are a family.” Pangea raised her glass. “To family.” “To family.” The goblets of wine clinked. The next day, Pangea visited Tae-Nam. Gepetto’s workshop bustled with activities. Coat hangers slid from the web railings on the ceiling. Puffs of steam filled the air as serfs ironed priceless uniforms. Carts hauled various mountains of clothes and uniforms. Pangea strolled with Diani and a squad of Lucifer Black soldiers, an unnecessary escort but they followed with Diani’s insistence. Gepetto shuffled slowly with his crutch. “Hello, Gepetto.” “You eminence.” Gepetto said with a shallow bow. “Are you here to see that young lass?” “I am, it seems like she has a fondness for tailoring and jewel crafting.” Pangea kept a formal smile, but could not help but to be disappointed. Like her, Tae-Nam was a nephilim, a gene-crafted human meant for greater things. Yes, Tae-Nam excelled in marksmanship and melee, but did not enjoy them, just like other practical endeavors. As they made their way, Pangea whispered. “And how is Tae-Nam’s progress learning under you? Is it going well?” Diani nodded. “She has been excelling in all subjects. I dare say she will surpass me.” “But she lacks experience and wisdom.” Pangea said. “Two most important things. And she certainly won’t gain them here crafting useless trinkets. Though I wonder if I should let her be…” At Tae-Nam’s workbench, Pangea crossed her arms. Tae-Nam gazed through the magnifying lenses and used her tweeze to place a gem on a ring. “Tae-Nam.” “Princess!” Tae-Nam excitedly hopped off from her stool. “How are your endeavors going?” Pangea said. “It’s going excellently, look!” Tae-Nam pointed at the wall. “Gepetto said you like wearing togas so I made some designs of my own!” A row of mannequins stood, dressed in various toga and dress uniforms. Some toga had no decorations, save for a golden pin that held the robes together. Red sashes wove between the white toga sheets, with elegant silver pins that shined. “They are wonderful, thank you Tae-Nam.” Tae-Nam giggled as she brimmed with pride. Pangea… >Let Tae-Nam be; she would no longer be part of The Inquisition. >Would soon have her learning more under Diani and eventually pulling her away from Gepetto’s workshop. Tae-Nam giggled as she brimmed with pride. Pangea. Let Tae-Nam be; she would no longer be part of The Inquisition. Daemons. Xenos. Chaos. They were the forces against humanity, and the mission to annhilate them all required absolute dedication. Tae-Nam, who lacked the want much like her, would be dead weight if forced to join the Inquisition. Pangea patted Tae-Nam’s head with a warm smile. Yes, this was her war, no unwilling participant would be forced. “Are you happy here?” Tae-Nam nodded. “I am!” Pangea smiled. “Good. I’ll see you some other time.” Later, Pangea visited her new Inquisitorial Chamber located in the lowest area of Sanctum Imperialis. The giant metal door groaned as they opened. Pangea’s heels clacked against the hard ceramite floor. A large metal chandelier lit the majority of the area, while rows of iron wall sconces on the stone walls illuminate the unlit corners. At the end of the chamber was a single long wooden table, complete with general office use that would be needed, including a skull “How… Pleasant.” Pangea said. “The chamber is well protected at the very least.” Diani said. “And look.” Diani opened a door at the end of the chamber. “A kitchenette with plenty of stocked goods, I’ll start brewing you tea, my lady.” “No, I won’t be staying here any longer… Oh fine. I suppose I can stay here then go back to studying the Rangdas.” Pangea sank into the plush leather chair with a cup of tea in hand, she raised an eyebrow at Diani walking around the desk and standing in front of it, as if she was ready to report. “My lady, I have a request.” “A request? Speak/” Pangea said. “I wish to retire from your retinue." The teacup almost slipped from her hand, Pangea kept a calm visage. “Explain.” “I’m truly thankful for everything. However… I wish to spend more time with my children and raise them in a safer environment. Terra is too crowded. I want my children to see the sky and feel the warmth of the sun. Please... I will not ask for anything else but I do not wish to leave you on a bitter note... But I also do not want to leave my children motherless." "Is this what you truly desire?" Pangea said. "It is." Jealousy, rage, and sorrow welled up in her heart. Diani, her precious assistant and second in command... This was all so sudden...>"The Inquisition will need a senior administrator. “Very well, but you will at least let me hold a ceremony will you?” “That will be fine. Thank you, my lady.” Through a week of correspondence between Pangea and Malcador, a deal was reached. While there would be no ceremony due to the Inquisition's need for discreetness. However, Diani would be given a new identity for her and her family, along with a retirement stipend and a promotion for her husband, if she agreed to a mindwipe. A regrettable, but a safe option. “Diani, can you get me some tea—” A month has passed since Diani’s retirement. Pangea looked around her empty office, a sigh escaped from her lips as she entered the kitchenette alone and brewed her own tea. Between examining the Rangda’s corpse and handling the Inquisition’s various administrative tasks, Pangea wondered when she would be freed of the shackles made of parchments and ink. The double doors creaked open. “Uncle!” Pangea leapt from her seat and dove. Malcador caught his niece’s barreling hug. “It’s good to see you!” Pangea said. “It’s good to see you too, Pangea.” Malcador said. “I apologize for making you handle the administrative duties alone.” She shook her head. “I can handle them, are you here just to visit or is this regarding something else? Is it about the Rangda?” “A live specimen will arrive soon, you and Astarte will interrogate it. Be prepared. And there is another matter. Your new assistant. Do you have anyone in mind?” “Not yet…” Pangea said. “Good, have you thought about where or who you will choose?” >"I was hoping to ask one of my brothers." >"I thought about finding a way to put an advertisement. "I thought you would have an idea, uncle." “I do. However, this will be a learning opportunity for you. Personnel can be an unpredictable administrative task. I will provide you guidance and options, but ultimately your new assistant is up to you.” Pangea cupped her chin as she wondered. “I’d need someone with experience being an assistant and in frontline combat.” Diani may have been the best lady-in-waiting, but her combat skill was that of an unaugmented human. A realization struck. With so many threats, a single response force would not be enough. Be it xenos, daemons, or chaos worshippers, a special force was required lest the inquisition faced a three front war. Pangea glanced at the stack of blank parchments. “It seems like you have lots on your mind.” Malcador said. “Come find me if you need another option for your assistant. Don’t forget to go to the Throne Room laboratory for the Rangda examination.” “I will, uncle.” “And Pangea, don’t overwork yourself.” Pangea smiled. “I won’t.” Pangea began her administrative ambition. First was three ordos of inquisition, while an inquisitor was not strictly bound of the three ordos, they presented as the main threat. Ordo Hereticus, Ordo Xenos, and Ordo Malleus. An inquisitor reported back to h,er and her. The only authority that could override hers was Father and uncle. The basic framework… Not to mention Pangea arrived at the laboratory and saw the captured Rangda inside the containment chamber. “Hello, daughter.” Astarte said. “Good afternoon.” Pangea said with a nod. “So this… This is the live specimen.” >"Should we try to communicate with it?" >"We can start with invading his mind." >"Let's see what kind of chemical they will be vulnerable of." >Write-in

“Can we try testing their senses? See how fast they can react and such? We can test out weapons later.” “A resourceful idea.” Astarte said. “Let’s do that.” With astartes recorded reflexes and physiology on a screen, a series of test began. The Rangda’s reflex seemed slightly slower than an astartes, and due to the communication barrier, not much could be done. While their hearings and tastebuds could not be tested, their sense of smell however had higher sensitivity, with aversion to acidic scents. The Rangda’s lips pulled back to a snarling scowl as the sound waves increased. “This is lethal for an astartes.” Astarte said. “They are rather resilient to sound as well.” “And they can hear better too…” Pangea said with a sigh. The Rangda’s fists slammed against the containment glass as its fangs bared towards them. Pangea sighed again, with two custodians behind and Palatine leaning against the wall. At the very least, she knew Rangdas were stupid. Then again, all xenos were. “We can start weapon testing, but we already know blades and bolter work. Las based weapons also did damage as well but needed several concentrated fire.” Astarte said. “Should we start communicating with it or at the very least invade his mind?” Astarte nodded. “I will do so. Stand here and support me.” Their minds melded into one. Conscious yet unconscious. The Rangda’s mind resisted but could only do for a brief moment. The worm inside the Rangda’s brain. The preliminary scan showed the worm and the that the removal would be a lethal operation. Pangea and Astarte melded their minds together, melting into one powerful psychic force, then delved in. At first, the worm was… A worm, a symbiotic worm that lived peacefully. Until the rest unfolded. The worm’s tiny brain did not show anything, but the strand of consciousness was not of its own. “A hivemind… Controlling another race.” Pangea rubbed her eyes as they ended the psychic interrogation that went longer than expected. Outside the containment room, Astarte and Pangea sat on a lab stool. The corners of their long labcoats touched the cold ground. “Have you encountered such xenos?” Astarte said. “Not like this, not stretched out. I already considered the Rangda as a typical intergalactic xenos empire, but if the worm’s link to the hivemind is that large… We can be certain that so will be the Rangdas.” Pangea tilted her head up, and sent a psychic message to uncle and Father, then rubbed her temples. The Rangdas would be a hurdle that needed to be conquered. “Recaff?” Astate said. “I’ll… I’ll have one.” Steam rose from the white mug of recaff. “It seems that something is on your mind.” Astarte said. "Well no, perhaps I do?" Pangea scratched her chin. "The Rangda will be purged and I know more research is needed. It's just that...">"I've been meaning to ask, what was Father like?" >"Do you know anyone that has the skills to be an assistant?" >Write-in

"I've been meaning to ask, what was Father like?" Astarte stopped mid-sip, her lips parted from the mug and was placed gently to the lab table. She crossed her legs as her brows furrowed together and her lips pulling down to a frown. Dim blue light casted a shadow over her sharp angles of her face. Pangea remembered the woman, the contributor of Pangea’s genes, was old as Father, maybe older than uncle. “Your father was a charismatic leader, peerless. One that listened to his compatriots, until he thought he was…” Astarte shook her head. “No, it’s not right to badmouth your father, he and I had our differences. We can leave at that. It’s improper to speak about your father behind his back, especially to you.” “I want to know.” Pangea said. “Please?” “Ask your father and make the decision yourself, if he will tell you. Surely, you do not want your brothers to speak ill of you behind your back?” Astarte said. “No… I will ask him if he returns.” Back inside her office, Pangea placed a corkboard on the wall behind her desk. Three parchments of each ordo were on the top with nothing else on the bottom. Each ordo needed a dedicated specialist, but no non-augmented humans could ever be enough. Astartes were necessary, after all, the Adjudicators were always an important component in her missions. “Good evening, Pangea.” “Uncle!” Pangea said. “You didn’t tell me you were going to visit. I didn’t know you would response so quickly!” He shook his head. “I am not here about the Rangda, not yet.” He placed a dossier on the table. Flipping through the pages, this agent was a sniper, decked in equipment Pangea has never seen along with accomplished missions… One of them was from Chemos, at the same time Pangea infiltrated the world. On further inspection, his mission on Chemos was to keep her safe. A faint bitterness rose; on one side, she understood Uncle and Father only wanted her safe during in her reckless age, but was she so unreliable that a secret sniper had to be sent? "Wait... If he was on Chemos on that day, then that means..." Her cheeks grew hot. "Oh for... This is just embarrassing, he saw me naked!" "I assure you, he did not care, and so did other people that day," Malcador said. "Your selfless action is the reason why he volunteered." "Well, yes, but..." Pangea said, cheeks blushing. “This is someone I can recommend.” Pangea’s eyes narrowed at the dossier. “Also, how come I have never seen this equipment before? Exitus rifle and Exitus pistol?" “We can discuss that later,” Malcador said. “There are layers of The Imperium you do not know yet, Pangea. But all will be revealed in due time. All I want to know is whether you wish to have him as your new assistant.”

"I'd like to know now. Haven't I proved enough?" “This is not a matter of one’s own achievements. It is a matter of formality and timing. That will be the end of it.” Malcador said firmly. “I… I understand. As for the assistant, I accept.” Days pass. Pangea’s day began with brief self training. Paperwork for establishing the Inquisition. Working on the Rangda, which by the second week, have been riddled with bruises and injected with various chemicals. On quieter days, Pangea checked with her retinue, ensuring they were well taken care of. “And this should be it for the day…” Pangea leaned back on her seat. A heavy knock echoed. Uncle never knocked, and she doubted her brothers knew where she was… Pangea pulled the door with her telekinesis. A man in a black bodysuit with a long rifle slung on his back stood. The man moved silently, sharp eyes forward as his hands stayed to the sides. At the front of her desk, he lowered his head and brought his hands together to make an aquila salute. “You must be Simos, my new assistant.” “An honor, your eminence. I am also to inform you any answers regarding my training and origins are to be limited, per The Sigillite’s orders.” “I thought so…” Pangea said. “Unfortunately, I have no assignments for you. I’m just going through some documents.” “Do you require assistance?” Simos said,. “No, I’ll be fine on my own, no one else can do it.” The silence returned, but this time Simos stood behind her like a statue. >Pangea could not help but glimpse into Simos's mind >"What are you allowed to tell me?" >write-in

"What are you allowed to tell me?" “My name is Simos. I am skilled in long ranged combat, and I am yours to command. I am forbidden to divulge my previous affiliations.” “So nothing then…” An hour passed. Unlike Diani’s comforting but quiet presence, Simos melded with the darkness. Not an inch of his muscles moved, yet his eyes did not blink, at least, that was how it seemed. Pangea set her quill down on the table and stretched her arms out. The stacks of parchments gathered neatly on the corner of her desk. “Are you good at paperwork?” “I am.” “While I don’t have any for you now since these are something only I can do, but I want you to be ready for that as well.” Late in the evening, Pangea returned to her room and laid on the bed. On the nightstand was a photo of her late hound, Luna, the picture reminded her of the warmth she adored to snuggle. A life without Luna, a life without her purpose… “I hate all of this…” The daily and dull life of research and bureaucracy weighed day by day. After a month, the Rangda lost its limbs and was soon on life support. Xenology research lessened yet her paperwork did not decrease. Now that she thought about it, she never did stay in the medicae long. There were annual check ups, ensuring her injured soldiers were faring well, but never for herself. To think Kharn and Greer, two astartes she could easily name as best melee combatants to be hospitalized… The Rangdans truly were a xenos race to be exterminated. “Your eminence!” Once she arrived, the various apothecaries and nurses bowed. Pangea quickly waved her hand to acknowledge their bows and ushered them to return to their duties. Pangea searched through the halls. At the last room on the opposite end of the hall, Kharn and Greer were inside the apothecary’s examination room, fully armored. “Your eminence.” Kharn and Greer saluted in unison. “Kharn, Greer.” Pangea said. “I heard you both were injured, grave enough for you to be hospitalized.” “We have been but recovered.” “Ah, it seems like I was late then…” Pangea said. “Am I interrupting, apothecary?” “Not at all, the examinations have been completed and they are ready for duty once more.” The apothecary said. “Then I assume you two will return to Angron?” “We shall.” Greer said. “Will you be joining us on the assault on Advex Mors with the First Legion?” “I didn’t know there was an assault planned…” Pangea said. “Excuse me.” Pangea stomped out of the medicae facility and to… >Wherever her Uncle was >Her office, to cool her head >Write-in

Pangea stomped out of the medicae facility and to her office, to cool her head. At the very least, the underground office provided a cool temperature to her office, though the cold air did little to quell her simmering anger. Advex Mors was her discovery. She had the first encounter with the Rangda, and it was her that studied the Rangda. Yet… The honor was not hers. Pangea slammed her fist on the table. “Pangea…” The door opened. Malcador walked inside with a disappointed frown. “Uncle.” Pangea said, she sighed. “I can’t be angry in my own office now?” “I expect you to understand your place.” Pangea gritted her teeth. “I faced more xenos than my brothers and I’ve studied the Rangdas personally yet I am not allowed to participate?” “I did not say you were.” Malcador said. “You will participate in the assault on Advex Mors.” Her eyes widened, gazing at her uncle. “Truly?” “As support. Studying the Rangda. Assemble your retinue.” Her shoulders drooped. “I see… I will prepare regardless.” Pangea stood at the hangar inside The Hydra, watching the menials and servitors carrying various tools and cargoes into the cargobays. Though this time, tech priests of Divisio Biologis would accompany them. “Your eminence, your retinue has arrived and so has the tech priests.” >"Tell my retinue to wait at the bridge. "Tell my retinue to wait at the bridge. I want to greet the tech priests first." Pangea always found the tech priests to be distasteful. In a world of enlightenment and free of superstition, the red robed zealots stood out. Pangea made her way to the main research station where the tech priests slowly gathered. The air soon smelled with incense and oil. The tech priests bowed, chanting, welcoming the Daughter of The Omnissiah, a title that irked her. She’d sooner be called a brat or a bitch than something so unfitting. Worst of all, they worshipped Father, calling him The Omnissiah. “Greetings. Daughter of The Omnissiah. I am Archmagos Mito.” The seven foot tall “priest” was draped in a red robe, with mechanical tendrils protruding from its back. Metals and tubes covered his face and body save for one eye, a layer of armor covered the rest. Despite their barbaric way of life, they were experts of their discipline. Pangea hid her abrasiveness, this was all for ending the Rangda once and for all, she needed all the help she could get. Pangea drew a plastic smile. “Greetings, Archmagos. Welcome to The Hydra. I look forward to a fruitful cooperation.” “As am I. To conduct research with the Daughter of The Omnissiah is an honor.” “Please, no need for such kindness.” Pangea said with firm politeness. “Then…” Mito let out a mechanical wheeze. “Inquisitor?” To be called an Inquisitor other than her retinue… Her heart fluttered with pride that she did not expect. While the Inquisition was not formally formed, most upper echelons knew, but did not openly state them. An open secret, as ridiculous as that sounded. “That’ll be fine.” Pangea said. “If you need anything. Let me know and I shall procure them.” “Compliance,” Mito said. “I offer you the same, Inquisitor.” "Thank you." >Ask a question (write-in) >Go to the bridge >Write-in

The meeting took longer than Pangea anticipated. Seeing how the Rangda is a top priority and with the Adeptus Mechanicus in the mix, she needed to know more. Having a new addition to a retinue meant knowing all she could. Pangea ordered her retinue to stand by and arrive at the bridge when ordered. Pangea explored her new research station as they talked. Mito and his retinue were not only xeno biology specialists but the most eager of them all. Mito expressed that to eradicate the xenos, they must be studied, much like Pangea’s belief. Mito and “The famed skitarii. It’s my first time seeing them. How many are there with you?” “Seventy five units. Twenty-five rangers. Fifty vanguards.” “I’ve heard of the rangers. Deadly, efficient and unyielding. I am glad to have them with us.” Mito bowed. “The honor is ours. If needed. We, the priests of the Motive Force, The Omnissiah and The Machine God, shall fight as well with faith and joy..” Pangea fought the urge to roll her eyes. “You are capable of combat?” Mito lifted up a bony finger. “Archmagos Ro, Verse 50: A priest must wield the holy binary well as his tools of cleansing. “I see… Tell me, how much do you know about the Rangda?” “Only from your studies.” They passed the servitors unloading various equipments. Pangea’s heel struck against the metal floor and watched the tech priests installing mechanical arms and heavy powered microscopes. The gray interior soon lit up with various lights of the machinery. Binary chants soon filled the room as did the incense. There was one last question. If need be. Their minds needed to be wiped, she doubted Mito and his tech priests would be fond of that. If redaction would be an issue Mito only had to ask. “One final thing, Inquisitor. This is my apprentice. Belisarius Cawl.” “Inquisitor.” Cawl bowed. “Tech acolytum Cawl is a prodigy who already mastered two disciplines. I believe he will learn more under if he is attached to your retinue.” “Is he capable of combat?” Pangea said. “Only the basics.” Mito said. “He has mastered data-scrying and is a fully pledged enginseer. He lacks true field work.” >"I can't have someone who is not capable of combat of the basic level, Archmagos." >"I doubt we'll do any true field work and if he is fine with that, then I accept him." >Write-in

“I doubt we'll do any true field work and if he is fine with that, then I accept him.” “Tech acolytum Cawl. Does the unit accept this condition?” Tech acolytum Cawl nodded immediately. “Compliance. Belisarius Cawl, will operate under The Inquisitor.” Pangea nodded in approval. “Then let’s meet your new colleagues.” The bridge of The Hydra hummed. Pangea’s hand traced the wall as she walked up stairs. The old crew of The Hydra saluted, be it the aquila or the traditional way. Cawl followed in silence. There was an air of… Emotions. Without the blessed emotion inhibitors, he could still sense them. Though those with facial readers or the ability to, one could tell as well. “Are you familiar with how we operate?” “I am not.” “We operate not only on mass scale conflict, but also in small team tactics with an unpredictable field under various opponents. While I do have tech priests for maintenance and other general purposes, having one under my direct command is a first.” At central command of the bridge, Cawl finally met the members of the secretly known Inquisition. Pangea introduced each of her personal retinue. There was Ontyep Kamui, the blade dancer. The nimble pilot Henrietta Quimby. The bodyguard of The Inquisitor, and The Wall of Inquisition, Sergeant Denog Gub. Finally, Captain Hector Werserian, the Executive Officer, was already famed long before the Inquisition. “Now that the introductions are finished…” >"Captain, please direct Cawl to a training sergeant for an evaluation of his combat ability and I want a report by my desk by the end of the day. "Cawl, I will evaluate your combat ability." Cawl’s eyes slightly widened. “The Inquisitor will evaluate this unit personally?” “You’re my first tech-priest under my command. I will see with my own two eyes how the priests of Mars are taught. Follow me,” The ride to the training field was silent. Pangea strolled around the training field. At the weapons rack, Pangea’s hands traced each training weapons. The Castellan Ax, the humble spear, Nemis Sword. Each weapon’s an identical match made in palm rubber. Pangea reached down to the humble staff. Cawl stood alone, hands together with a single mechadendrite. “I do not understand. Why do you waste time on this cog in the gear?” “You’re not a cog, Cawl. Don’t call yourself that. Choose a weapon and face me.” The staff spun, in a way that Cawl found so… Beautiful, a word that he never imagined to use. Be it her charisma or her martial prowess, the simplicity of her movements reminded him of a spinning rotor. “Under me, you are Cawl. Now…” She pointed her staff at Cawl. “Fight me.” Cawl stood with a halberd in hand. “Compliance.” The movement of the Mechanicum martial arts lacked passion. Cawl jabbed first, then swung, followed by a counter attack. His movements reacted and calculated. It reminded her of an arithmetic, whatever her movement was calculated and a response was formed. “Attack! Don’t rely solely on counter attacks!” Pangea’s staff moved faster. Cawl registered damage to his leg. No longer did the staff became an only weapon to worry, but her legs as well. The staff swung up, knocking the halberd out of his hands. “I’ll test your firearms handling later. Defense is solid, however, I want to see more aggression in your style. Good work, dismissed.” “Compliance.” Pangea returned to the bridge where Hector stood beside her seat. “Hector.” He bowed. “Inquisitor.” Her heart fluttered. “How have you been?” “Better, now that we are moving again. You, Inquisitor?” “I feel very much the same.” The air was quiet, and the sound softened as she stared into his eyes. “If you have time, maybe we can—” “Ahem.” Ontyep said. “I hope you didn’t forget the rest of us… And who’s the new guy?” Ontyep jerked her thumb at Simos. “Right…” Pangea scratched the back of her head. “Everyone, this is Simos, as you’ve all heard Diani retired to take care of her family. “I need to call my brothers. Simos, I'll be fine on my own for now so you and Cawl can mingle.” Simos stepped forward. “Will you not need an assistant?” “If this was a strategy meeting, then yes. But…” Pangea sighed. “We are here as support, with xenobiology research being our main goal. This will be quick and a formality more than anything. That, and I wish to see my brothers.” “Inquisitor, is that wise?” Hector said. “There should be an escort. My men have settled in, I can go with you.” “With respect, Captain.” Simos said. “The assigned assistant is the appropriate escort.” Simos, the pale man with a sharp angled face, stared at Hector, a light skinned man with a strong jaw and a sharp gaze. Ontyep whispered something to Quimby, who blushed while Denog crossed his arms and shook his head, muttering about how much of a headache this expedition will be. “Someone who just joined this prestigious retinue is not deserving of an honor.” Hector said. “There is no honor, this is duty, and as the assistant it is only logical I go.” Simos said. Pangea massaged her eyes. Honor to escort her to see her brothers “Barking like dogs over a scrap…” Pangea said in a sharp tone. “ New order, learn to get along over some drinks or wrestle, I do not care which. Denog, you will be tasked to see how it goes and report what happened in the end.” Denog, ever loyal and reliable, nodded. “Aye, Inquisitor.” “Inqui—” “Now, I will go see my brothers.” The Invincible Reason, a fitting name for a primarch like Lion, did not have bustling serfs or any kind of activity. By the time she arrived, all preparation were already finished. Inside the command center, a tense air surrounded Lion and Angron. “These are xenos unlike we have met, your fleet alone cannot create a gap.” Angron said. “That is for me to worry about, Angron.” “So mighty aren’t cha? You're not the leader of this invasion.” A fanged jaw and bushy beard… Pangea’s mood soured immediately. Not only did Angron and Lion were assigned to this mission, but also Leman… Pangea did not know when Leman even arrived at Terra. Angron, Leman, and Lion all stared at one another. “Brothers.” “Pangea!” Angron said relievedly. “You’re only supporting this invasion. Why are ye here?” Leman said. “I invited her.” Lion said. “Her research in Rangdan will be crucial. As I was saying…” The discussion at hand was the naval battle and how to break through before entering Advex Mors. Though the information of Rangdan naval forces were extracted from one Rangda, preemptive plans were formed… Except no one agreed with one another. Angron and Pangea had to pull back Leman and Lion from bickering. >Pangea proposed to reconvene at a later time >Pangea assisted Angron in preventing Leman and Lion from fighting >Write-in

If they reconvened at another time, Pangea knew nothing would change. An initial plan must be made, though it might be changed having a basic outline always eased the process of strategizing. With Angron’s assistance, Pangea kept Lion from remarking true but scathing remarks and Leman from outright pummeling Lion’s face. “I wonder if Father did this on purpose…” Pangea and Angron walked side by side in the halls of Invincible Reason. “I doubt Father chose us for the sake of creating friction.” Angron said. “But we do have friction in an expedition that may well be the most important expedition there is.” Pangea said. “But they are effective, individually that is.” Angron said. “The best we can do is split into teams of two.” Pangea shook her head. “I’m only a support element, Angron. My retinue is here but my sons— I mean my nephews, are not here. You, Lion, and Leman will be enough.” Angron rubbed his chin. “While I’m confident three expeditionary forces are enough, it is troubling to have Leman and Lion together.” “Should I speak to uncle?” “No, Advex Mors is too important to delay.” Angron said. “We will do what we can. I will contact you after the warp jump.” Pangea returned to The Hydra, after taking a seat in her throne at the command center, the warp jump began. Pangea rested her head on her hand propped up by her elbow resting on the armrest. The navigator did her job well as usual. Pangea yawned. The jump would take a while but her presence in the command center was always necessary. She shut her eyes tightly. A dull headache pulsed. “Mnn…” The pain sharpened, a familiar sensation, one that she hoped to never go through again. “Inquisitor?” Simos said. “Get me an astropath.” Pangea said. “And medicae…” Gone was her young and unprotected mind. The mind fortress she built over the years of training and facing adversity withstood the vision. There, she saw two brothers fighting, one planet submerged in toxic clouds and another from a more civilized world. Scythe and sword clashed, one brother in pale armor and another in… >A golden armor and red cloak, wielding a curved sword, moving like a furious tempest. >A blue armor, wielding a sword cloaked in flames, in a future wrought with decay and war…

A blue armor, wielding a sword cloaked in flames, in a future wrought with decay and war… The visions of her Father, entombed on the Golden Throne, spoke to her brothers. A clean city was undersigned, led by her brother corrupted to chaos. Pangea strengthened her mind, focusing as the visions continued. “Inquisitor?” Simos said. “Are you truly well?” Beside Simos were the medicare staff and the astropath. After a brief check up, she ordered the astropath to send a message after the warp jump ended. Until then, Pangea held on, witnessing the decaying Imperium in the fortieth millennium. No matter how many times, the visions of the future haunted her. A low thoom echoed. Advex Mors soon came into view. “No naval blockade, interesting…” Pangea rubbed her lips in ponderance. “This is a mining world after all, but they had to know the dynasty fell.” The fleet of the primarchs arrived. “No incoming fighters.” The operator said. “They’ll come, sooner or later.” Pangea said. “Continue vigilance. All guns be prepared.” The bridge vox crackled. “We go in as planned then.” Leman said. “Indeed we do.” Angron said. “Beginning life scan.” Pangea waited, her hand gripped the armrest tightly. “Bio scans detected no life.” Angron said. “They could be hiding underground.” Pangea said. “It does not matter if they are. They have no aerial defence. We decimate the planet at a safe distance.”>"Lion, wait. We can send a scouting party to confirm it." >"This is a bit disappointing..." Pangea sighed. "Lion, wait. We can send a scouting party to confirm it." “There is no need.” “At the very least we should—” “You are here as support, not as a commander. Know your place, Pangea.” Lion said. The torpedoes launched from the flagships. Fire bathed Advex-Mors, and Pangea watched with her fists clenched. All the knowledge or even new specimens, gone. The enemy world being attacked made sense, a thorough bombardment would weaken any ground forces before a planetary invasion. The plan unfolded as such, and Pangea watched from the bridge. “I don’t like this one bit.” Pangea said. “I get that it’s better to bombard than to investigate, but I don’t like it one bit.” “However, the invasion is going rather smoothly.” Hector said. “They are.” Pangea sighed. “Not that there is any resis—” “Enemy vessels approaching!” A fleet of Rangdan vessels arrived through a giant purple ring that materialized in the void. Behind the ships were the spiny cords like the images Pangea extracted from the Rangda. Her ship however was but one, with no supporting fleet with few fighters. “Battlestations!”>“Raise the shield and engage all guns!
