a few dozen kilometer north of Nice.

You decided to reject modernity and embrace tradition, with a willow beehive you hand-weaved and a wild Italian Bee swarm you stumbled into while checking some plot of wood you recently inherited.
Of course, the obvious choice would be transhumance in lavender field, but this is a modern approach AND you're a one-beehive teenager while the biggest beekeeper of the region is a 30-man company the dreaded 3B, Bears Beekeeping Business, the local Wallace Giant's Bee that refuse to disappear in the convolutions of history.
You can also set your apiary near your home, however the honey-forage potential is poor and your neighbour David Malais have a nasty tendancy to spray hives with pesticides when treating his cornfields
Then, you can set the apiary in some woodlot you inherited recently from some wineseller cousin of your father that died from unealthy overweight mixed with excess drinking of his wares.

Straw, held together by wicker, coiled in a dome with an opening.
This makes for the perfect traditionnal beehive, as you've seen in the old black and white pictures of your ancestor from a couple or three centuries ago.And you can locally source your materials.

For the hive, it was a matter of opportunity really. Walking to your plot was empowering : on all earth, there is a place that is yours. It is here and there, you're the master of your woodland domains. The swarm was beginning to wax a branch. Thinking fast, you weaved the structure directly around the branch, then saw it and held it at man-level.
On one hand, you saved quite a bit of money, and your hive will be well-insulated. On the other, your hive is Frameless which will complexify maintenance and care.
Still you're not clueless - state-mandated Beekeeping classes for every midschooler tend to help - and the hive's roof is actually a clever fold that should give despite propolis and let you open and watch the swarm.

You are in the middle of March. Of course, as an high-schooler your time is limited...

Apiary : One colony [condition : good]

Chose one Apiary Action and one High School action

Having a single hive is risky. Things tend to go wrong quite fast. However, your swarm is in good condition
>Work on beehive prototype
Right now, your hive have several limitations :
- Honey gathering will kill the swarm (traditional method)
- can't simply grow or reduce the hive size
- can't divide the swarm for Queen breeding
However, the circular shape and letting the bees build freely come with their own sets of advantage : the beehive retains heat better this way, and bees can manage the space as they need.

Something to use the wood we clear for, maybe. Once we have the area cleared and set up to our liking, we can research and upgrade the beehive.

Pros : same element is hive, nucleus hive, super which is economical and convenient. Of all the "standard" hives, they're said to be the best tuned to the bee and its lifecycle, and allow the unique skill Warré Swarm Split Author bias is showing
Cons : Warré method is easier with an assistant than alone.
>Langstroth/Dadant
Almost the same. First is in inch, so inferior, while second is in centimeter and more used in french.
The defensors of Langstroth and Dadant are cult-like, despise each other, and often don't broadcast their allegiance. Picking one of this will make you friends and foes as well as entrenching you in the religion war.
>Bee Bottle
Will let you watch and extract honey easily, giving you more insight on bee life cycle. Plus, materials are easy to forage, so you can However, not being able to act against the Varroa Mite is a big minus, as is forcing your bees to live in direct sunlight and microplastics in your honey.
>Just weave another beehive
Embrace tradition. It'll bee good if you stumble in a swarm.

So, Warre is very interesting. It's a bit of a bee autist hive, that let you do nice stuff.
You stack elements. This year (after all our bee died because of peasant-induced chemicaling) we bought 4 hives with Buckfast nuclei and we trapped 2 wild swarms (italian). One of them died in less than 3 days, but my 5 hives are currently in good shape.
We raised 3 of them to 2 elements and 2 to 3 elements, should gather honey those days.
I've got a lot of asian hornet though : always 1 or 2 hovering near the hives Witnessed some European Hornet assault an asian one.

When we set up hives, I waxed 8 top bars and mixed top bars with built frame in the middle to fast-track their building, and leave them free to build in any shape they want - in particular, cut the angles to decrease heat loss in winter...
When winter will come, we can rotate the stack 90 degrees (or whatever inch-nail-spin you burger use for angle) to set the frames parallel to hive entrance so that they retain heat, and put them back perpendicular in Apris so they can ventilate better

(You) spent most of your free time cutting down the weeds around the trees where you set your hive, resulting in a nice, cleaned, easily-walkable zone of work.
Working right near your hive let you assess the traffic - which is good, with the telltale bright yellow and orange of pollen puff brought in, necessary to feed the developping brood.
Then, there's obviously school taking up too much of your precious time - especially so early in the season, where much is to be done : after all, you registered as a licenced Beekeeper as soon as you lucked into the swarm on the plot of lands.
Chosing to work on the Bee Suit was smart, on two aspects. First, you didn't pissed of anyone with your odd (or heretical) choice of hive. Then, it signaled the whole school you're taking this matter really seriously, slightly raising your Social Standing.
Of course, this doesn't change that 95% of your classes are useless, not bee-related topics.

Out of curiosity wouldn't you be doing effectively the same thing looking for wild swarms and patrolling the wood for potential risks? Like what would stop you from running into a wild swarm while looking for risks or vice versa?

Because for swarm hunt, you try to cover as much ground as possible while keeping your ear and eyes up listening to the characteristic hummms.
For threats, you're methodically survey ground around your plot, looking for displeasant thing, some real, some specific from that alternate bee-mad universe.

Cesarie Apriori

An orphaned heir of a long line of beekeepers. Despite being similar in age to you, his skill and training surpass your mutual peers. He rightfully carries himself with pride over his skill in beekeeping and lineage, but this has hardly made him relatable to other kids. Jacques Beauregard is the quiet guy in the back of the class.
He tries and works hard
He always loved digital animals and was blissed when he could take his beekeeping licence
But he is really bad at this
He can't recognise the bee species nor the flowers in his field
he kinda possess a lot that noone really wanted so the police is okay with him being hear.
No house nor other possession than the tent that he always carry, an absurdly big bag and 1 hive
His lack of knowledge is the reason that his only hive only produces mad honey at 20% of its capabilities
When he tries it he gets high, eats everything, wake up with nothing days later and the cycle repeats each year

It's a tad early in the season. However, swarms are around : you found one, after all.
Striding far and fast, leveraging your strong build and persistance, you locate not one but two wild swarms. You mark the places as this time, you can't simply weave your hives around them : too high. Theorically, you should take an hive body - including a couple waxed frames, and a coupled honey-filled ones - bring it under the wild swarm, shake it down, let it get in and wait an hour to settle.
Then you should close the hive, bring it to the apiary, and voila.
Problem : you don't have any hive. You should act fast : not only settling swarms are vulnerable, not declaring them to the governement if you're unable to capture them yourself is illegal as bees are frail and endangered and a key for humanity's survival.
Instead of weaving one of your traditional hive (directly around the swarm), you try your best at socializing.
Word got around you have both your Beekeeping licence and been working on your own beesuit. Cesarie Apriori himself, sharing useless-nonbee-class N°3, nodded once in acknowledgement while crossing your path. Jack Harrlock, however, was frankly displeasant.

However, as the git is frail, malnourished and overall some kind of nutjob you don't break him like a twig here and now.
