Arndt was let go because he was writing too slowly. Sure, he, Kasdan and Abrams had disagreed over the direction of the script and which characters it should focus on, but Abrams didn’t decide to take over scripting duties himself until it became apparent that Arndt was never going to be done in time before filming began.
