They believe that Carnage (and Venom) is just a goopy monster who has a humanoid body and can shapeshift at will. That's the extent of their knowledge and they don't care about anything after that, who the character is, what he does, or anything else.
Because they don't read comics, everything they know is from a few panels and half-assed memories from their childhood. They don't know that the symbiotes are just hanging on the human, acting as spandex, clothes, growing their goop around the human's appendages into other shapes, and generally looking creepy.
When confronted by this fact, that a human exists underneath the goop and the head doesn't magically disappear to some other dimension, instead of LEARNING something, they double down on their ignorance and continue saying it's not a mask.
When the comic panels literally show how the mask lays over their heads (nevermind that the comic stories themselves establish they're basically just costumes), they ignore it and cherry pick random images as proof that no human head is under that mask or that it's even a mask. They dig their hole further down into ignorance.
Nothing but children who stick their fingers into their ears and REEEEEEE for 200 posts because someone challenged their imaginary world they built up around themselves.
Or they're just lonely contrarians.
