That thing made up the bulk of her body mass, and was a physical part of her body that she literally tore out after Ripley fired grenades into it. She looks off balance because she's literally been disemboweled. She's also intended to be hanging from the ceiling, and wasn't supposed to be mobile once she's started laying eggs, meaning her body has atrophied to the point where her lower torso is supposed to be becoming vestigial.
