Take its pieces and just play with them, that way you don't have to go digging and they'll all presumably be color-coordinated. Brainstorm what you want to make on paper if you want. If you have trouble deciding what to build, consider what kinds of things you like to see in movies, read about in books, do in real life, etc.
And not to be a reposting jackass, but pic related was just something I put together mostly from an old mars mission set and 31111's connecting pieces. I know it's not that exciting, but it gave me the feeling of creativity and excitement and troubleshooting that it sounds like you're searching for.
