I boxed up all 200 of my Monster High dolls today to prepare to move house, and holding each one and really looking at her to pack her, I realised something.
I'm about to drop an unpopular opinion but here goes. The fashions on Monster High were really lacking. Obviously they were not as bad as what Barbie is dressed in these days but here's my opinion:
Only some dolls had clear styles that reflected real world fashions (Frankie is prep, Venus is punk, Operetta is vintage) but others had no defined style at all and the clothes chosen for them seem really random. Abbey started out strong with fur and snow boots but her outfits all became bland sack dresses with similar geometric "ice" prints. Draculaura was inspired by lolita and other J-fashion but really missed the mark. Clawdeen was always wearing something that looked way too young for her despite being the fashion designer character, and her colour scheme of purple and green was ugly. What was Lagoona's style? Was she sporty? Was she a hippy? Every character introduced after Skelita and Jinafire had nothing that stood out about them so they had no personal style to inspire their clothes. The longer the line went on the more often the ghouls were dressed in boring dresses with printed on vague "monster" details. I'm not even talking about the reboot.
I'm grateful to have Monster High and I won't be getting rid of any of my dolls, but I think I'm going to start sewing my own clothes for them that actually resemble fashionable clothes people wear, but with interesting monster details.
