But I think people sometimes overlook one of my personal all time favorite titan sets because it’s from so early on - the venerable Exo-Toa. While its practical articulation is obviously pretty lacking compared to later years, its overall look is still impressive as hell and holds up as well as anything in Bionicle’s 10 year run. The latch mechanics and just the very concept of a literal lego exo suit for those canister sets you bought a year ago still amazes me considering when it was designed. And that collapsable head by turning its back gear is pure jizz. Whenever the question gets brought up whether early G1 is better than later G1, I don’t think back to the simplistic toa gearbox; frankly I was happy to see it go if it meant full on articulated sets. I’m also not bothered by the change away from the island setting; I enjoyed most of the expanded world, and Greg’s writing getting shittier and edgier with every passing year was actually pretty easy to ignore. But I DO think about the exo-toa, and then I can’t help but wonder if maybe there really was something to those first 2 years that got lost along the way.
