Anyone saying there's no variety isn't looking hard enough. Literally every other 1/6 manufacturer is cranking out stuff other than Marvel or Star Wars. And they do quality on par with Hot toys now. The real thing is most of /toy/ is into anime and that doesn't really flourish in 1/6. just wish more people were upfront that they want sexy anime girls and robots instead of claiming on of the oldest, widest used scales has no variety.
Another thing that's hurt the market is ironically how good the quality has become. 1/6 before the 2000's or so was mostly figures that were a few notches above retail GI Joes. That helped bring a huge DIY aspect of customizing into figures and people would treat them like model kits as much as toys. you'd get a body for $60-$120 and then use it for whatever projects. This is how Hot toys started I believe, just generic soldier toys. Now there's more emphasis on just buying 1/6 as a high end display piece instead of a toy.
See that Marwencol guy for a good example of what 1/6 used to be (and still is in a more niche, generally older community.)
