Hasbro pretty much baited Harmony Gold into suing them over a limited run figure. Had Hasbro lost the suit, the financial damage would have been relatively small but if they won it freed them to do whatever they wanted with the character.
It's no coincidence that T30 Jetfire, sporting a very Macross Valkyrie alt mode, came out the same year the suit was dismissed.
