For me it was a mix of two things.
I would plan arcs and adventures for my toys, and then I would plan to expand the cast based on the toys announced in the back of boxes.
However, I would run into problems because I wasn't knowledgeable about better places to buy so I'd miss out on a lot of figures that weren't stocked in the places I'd usually go search for stuff, and then I would post-pone things until I gave up on the figures I needed and sometimes the introduction of said toys were part of plot points that could make or break arcs in my head.
What finally broke me and made me give up was that I "needed" like a thousand dollars to get the Saint Seiya Surplices to use as the big bads in a tournament arc or something so I settled with the bootlegs and they redefined awful for me. I should've mentioned that most of my figures were bootlegs but these were so bad they made me give up on the whole thing.
It also got boring so be more spontaneous with your playtime, kids.
I'm planning to "retake" it as stop motion but it's just an idea floating around.
