The Rancor capaign would have gotten funded if the sculpt and paint apps were in line with what people should expect for a figure of that size and price range. Granted, you're not going to get the same level of crisp detail and quality paint apps on a plastic toy as a statue (seen in pic related), but it was still a premium product with a premium price tag, and Hasbro has the sculptors, engineers and technology to make something that looks way better than the prototype that they showed.
GI Joe has been the biggest winner for Haslab so far and I think that's in no small part because Hasbro's best people are working on GI Joe. They clearly love the IP and they know what the fans will actually get excited for.
