Anyone have any experience reproducing thin rubbery pieces using the standard 2 part rubber mold process? Or is there another technique to try?
I'm not sure it would work and I'm fearful that the mold rubber would adhere to or damage the rubber piece I'm trying to create a mold from even if coated with
a release agent or petroleum jelly.
I was thinking of making a rubber mold of the rubber piece, then casting it in resin. Aftewards coating the resin cast piece with plasti-dip in layers to gain
the desired thickness and then peeling it off.
On the left is the piece I am trying to reproduce.
On the right is my attempt to dip the rubber piece directly in plasti-dip but I wrapped the original in plastic wrap first to try to avoid damage. The result was it got the overall shape but much of the detail was lost as you can see because the plastic wrap did not adhere to the rubber piece tightly enough. The plastic wrap seemed to get
consumed by the plasti-dip but it did prevent damage to the original piece. I've considered using a few coats of Mr. Masking Sol in place of the plastic wrap. Any other ideas?
