So you really do sound like a weeb, at least in terms of being ignorant, considering how many popular realistic painters there are for comic book characters.
You were probably born after the comics boom in the 90s, so you probably didn't know of the hugely popular comic book cards in the 90s. Marvel Masterpieces with Joe Jusko, the Hildebrandt Brothers, Dave Devries, Vallejo, Bell, etc. This is probably why fans continued seeking realistic styles.
There's such a wide scope of art, you're only looking at a small percentage of what fans seek, hence all those realistic statues you're deriding are actually sought after.
I should note that i prefer comic book styles over all the auxillary stuff. I don't even like Alex Ross stuff, despite being a fan of his designs and comics he's done.
