picrel is the first "real" set I remember getting, which was for xmas, all the other stuff I had was hand-me-down from my brother. Set gets reposted a lot but it's such a classic and has absolutely influenced what I love today.

Best raise baseplate design, huge transparent panels / doors / domes, magnets, all accessories are chrome (weapons / crystal), crazy octagonal tubes / pipes

You can get this OG set for the same price if you feel like you've missed out.

Zoomer aqua stuff doesn't look to bad, I'm just boomer biased and think reasonably priced used sets are better value overall. You can get new stuff at a 20% discount as some point usually.

I actually really like this - I always wanted it for the baseplate and the 8x8 transparent medium blue plates. I snagged basically a complete set from ebay with box for ~$65, seemed like a great deal just for the parts.

My fav set is pic related. It just has so much going on, I got it for xmas when I was like 5.

Great choice anon, that's a classic and comes in tons of colors and prints. It's up there for me too, like the neon orange ones from aquanauts.

Coincidentally my fav two parts are from a set that has those containers. From this set, it's either the giant transparent blue panels or the yellow octagonal pieces. They come in tan, blue, grey, and black, they've been used from high technology pipes to ancient temple columns, it's really hard to get the octagonal shape in that size anywhere else.

Aquanauts Neptune Discovery Lab, set had it all.

- Best usage of landscape raised baseplates, had two
- Massive enclosed base, with secondary enclosed pod structure, large transparent parts
- Vehicle side build and landing pad
- Play feature of crystals interact with boxes, crane, converor belt
- Excellent minifigure accessories with chrome weapons, chrome crystals, magnets, working compass

Easily one of the best sets of all time, IMO
