Honestly, I think it's like you said - it's no longer such a niche market, there's a TON of different choices to pick from now, and the articulation and customization potential is far superior now than it was when Shinki first came out. There's also the issue of age - many of the Shinki I've got my hands on recently have been in rougher and rougher shape, what with screws rusting, plasticizers leaking, and various discolorations even when the figures are still NIB - everything breaks down with age, and Busou Shinki are over 17 years old now and weren't exactly made of the highest quality materials.
