I remember in the 00s it was a pretty hyped up thing and we got some really damn nice figures like pic, but the hype petered out by the mid-00s. Who knows why they stopped, especially since big fucks like pic were great.
From what i remember, most of the cost savings was from using less plastic, which cost less to ship.
Either way, lots of big figures exist for cheap because they use minimal parts that are obviously plastic injection molded
