Looking back at a lot of those sets, there was attention paid to play patterns and little hidden details in the sculpts. When I see miniature playsets nowadays, they're lacking in both those elements. Sculpts are bland, and there seems to be no thought given to how the kid will engage with the set.
Example: I think one of the most brilliant things the MM team did was give you ways to expand play outside of the set itself. The shark-fin glider in the Man Eater set let you expand battle to the hypothetical seas above and beyond the set. Or how Skull Dungeon had the skull's jaw lower down to the become stairs leading down into the lab. Or how Dragon Island came with the inflatable raft, letting you play out approaching the island and landing on the reef. It's shit like this that encourages creativity and coming up with your own little stories.
