The idea, which may or may not have historical backing, is that late in the war Germany was so out of materials for paint and time to paint stuff that the factory primer coat would have to do. Pic shows a modern restoration going for such a paintjob, notice how the red here is a lot more, well, red than the reddish brown normally used in the German three tone camo.
