He's explicitly a male in the original canon, and he's only referred to as female as an error in one of his Prime Master Combinations (He's referred to as male in the Micronus combination, and is explicitly still a male in his box bio in French, Portuguese, and Spanish). So yeah, he's a dude, and he deserved his own mold rather than just being a repaint of Slash (who actually looks nothing like his original beast mode).
