Look at Haruhi here (one of the very first Figmas). She still looks pretty decent in terms of sculpt and paint, and she has decent range everywhere, with full knee and elbow bends and balljoints for torso articulation. Even the skirt is soft IIRC so she gets good hip range.
Compare that with Western attempts (and indeed most Eastern ones) at making highly poseable toys prior to that and the best offerings were Takara's Microman range, which suffered from fragility due to the amount of joints at such a tiny size, and also clear plastic being a bitch.
