I'm almost entirely convinced that Neitlich got confused by Mattel selling the rights to the ANIMATED SERIES off in the 90s, which is why they had to deal with Classic Media and then Dreamworks to be able to produce Filmation-originated characters.
But yeah, if Mattel were lying about owning the rights it would be weird that they were the ones being sued by Don Glut in 2014. If they were just a licensee now that lawsuit would have been redirected to the current trademark owner.
