Many of them don't look good without being painted. Usually these are the light colored ones, which is most of them.
Pic related look really nice with no further painting, based on my personal experience. Gourais and the blue dog girls are probably fine too.
I feel they're just the right size and have the right amount of accessories as something you can randomly fiddle with on your computer desk. You can switch parts easy enough to make something unique. They do have cute faces and proportions. They still seem to be kinda overpriced. I probably won't buy any more unless I love the design and am sure that they'd look good with a straight build.
