Over time, I've sort of gone back and added to my headcanon that during the time of the yellow castle, there was one king and the leaders of the later factions were all nobles who served him. After he died, they all ended up fighting for the throne and then made their own kingdoms.
MORE LORE: the Bat Lord was one of the nobles and he got the shitty lands you see in the backgrounds of the Fright Knights sets. This led to him having the fewest followers, so he ended up stuck having to put up with that crazy witch so she could raise an army of skeletons to make up for it. He eventually took in an elf girl who was lost in the mountains and had a child with her, who grew up to be the bat lady who's the villain from the current Elves theme.
