The fatness was part of the Animated aesthetic, it doesn't need to be carried over to a G1 interpretation. Grandus was a massive, bulky dude in G1 but he wasn't fat. They did make him fat in Animated as part of that aesthetic, so why can't they do the same in reverse for Bulkhead? I'll agree this figure doesn't work well for him but it's not because he's not fat or round.
