I had the exact same issue that you did.
Take the piece that connects to his vehicle mode front, stick the two two-barreled flaps together, then put the feet enhancements, combined, onto the opposite side of it. The shoulder paldrons can go on on the sides.
A lot of the pics of it are just from the front, so that's why I had the issues with it.
