This is probably a dumb question but could I get a little insight on what makes Godzilla such a popular franchise? Specifically for the older content? I did not grow up with it and only found interest with the 2014 movie. Then I saw the sequel and Kong and it became just so hokey. It took the piss out of everything I liked about the first one, other than Godzillas awesome new design. The over the top sci-fi was almost comical. It didn't feel like I was watching a monster movie about a force of nature, it was just some more cosmic Marvel garbage. However, I also saw Shin Godzilla and Minus One and loved them both.
I look back at older movies trying to find more content I like and I just cannot get into most of them as they really are even more out there than pink Godzilla fighting the Red Ape from Aqua Teen. Even when the older films are trying to be serious the limitations of the effects and acting take me out. Godzilla in many cases wants to look scary, and I can see at its core everything he needs is there, but in those older movies, the effect in practice is lost.
I am not shitting on the series, I genuinely want to become more of a fan as I have a large urge to buy at least a 4th wave Shin at some point. I really wish they just kept the themes of the 2014 movie.
